SAN DIEGO (KGTV and CNS) - Trial started Monday for the Yuma, Arizona police officer accused of raping a woman during a visit to San Diego.Jared Elkins, 34, is charged with eight felony counts of rape for the alleged incident in September 2017.The 23-year-old woman’s mother called 911 to report a crime at a home on Marlborough Street in Kensington. Elkins, who is related to the alleged victim by marriage, was staying at her home.Elkins, the alleged victim, and two other family members went to dinner then watched a movie while drinking beer and wine at the home before the alleged assault occurred, according to prior court testimony.RELATED: Arizona police officer charged with raping San Diego womanThe alleged victim testified during a preliminary hearing in April that Elkins physically forced her to participate in sex acts despite her pleas for him to stop. The two other family members were asleep in the house so small "you can hear someone breathing in the next room," the woman testified.During the alleged assault, the woman said she asked Elkins what would happen if she cried out for help. "He said, ‘I would kill you,"' the woman testified. After the incident, the woman said she found another family member in the house and they called police.At a hospital, the alleged victim's blood-alcohol level was determined to be .09 percent, according to witness testimony.Besides forcible rape, Elkins is charged with rape of an intoxicated person, forcible digital penetration, two counts each of forcible oral copulation and oral copulation of an intoxicated person, forcible sexual penetration and sexual penetration of an intoxicated person.Elkins -- a seven-year veteran of the Yuma Police Department who later resigned -- faces 14 years in prison if convicted, according to Deputy District Attorney Lisa Fox. 1834

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A 55-year-old homeless man who was attacked with a skateboard while sleeping in North Park has died, San Diego Police said.Arthur Angulo was sleeping in alley in the 2800 block of El Cajon Boulevard  at around 4:30 a.m. Saturday when a man bashed him repeatedly with a skateboard, according to police.  Angulo suffered ``visible signs of major trauma to his upper body,'' San Diego police homicide Lt. Todd Griffin said.``The attack was unprovoked," officer Tony Martinez said over the weekend.RELATED: Sleeping homeless man attacked in North ParkAngulo was taken to Scripps Mercy Hospital, where medical staff determined he would not survive and placed him on life support, Griffin said.He was removed from life support Thursday "and died in the hospital as the result of his injuries,'" Griffin said.Police said the attacker is white, about six feet tall, and between 19 and 26 years old. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A customer at a downtown flooring warehouse found a man dead inside the business Wednesday afternoon, according to San Diego Police.First responders arrived and performed CPR but could not resuscitate the man.According to police, homicide detectives were called to the 1000 block of G Street around 4 p.m. to investigate the death.Ghedeer "Tony" Radda, 49, the owner of the business, suffered traumatic injuries to the torso, according to Lt. Matt Dobbs, but it was unclear if he'd been shot or stabbed.Police said surveillance cameras captured two suspects running from the area. They have yet to determine a motive.Police said one of the suspects is a man seen wearing a mask resembling an older woman with gray hair. He was also wearing a gray jacket and dark pants. The second suspect is a woman last seen with purple hair police say may be a wig. She was also wearing a dark jacket and blue jeans. Radda leaves behind a wife and two young children. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A Camp Pendleton Marine was taken into custody this week after border officials say the Marine was trying to smuggle immigrants through a port of entry.The junior-enlisted Marine was taken into custody early Monday morning by U.S. Customs and Border Protection personnel at the San Ysidro Port of Entry, according to the 1st Marine Division at Camp Pendleton. The Marine was reportedly bringing undocumented immigrants into the port.The Marine is being held in civilian custody and CBP and the Naval Criminal Investigative Service were investigating. The lead authority in the case has not been determined.RELATED: Attorneys for Marines accused of human smuggling call public arrests illegalThe Marine was not part of military personnel currently serving at the border to assist CBP and Border Patrol agents, Camp Pendleton said.The Camp Pendleton Marine is the latest military member from the base to be charged in an immigration scandal. In July, 23 Marines were detained over human trafficking, drug distribution, and weapons charges, according to the base.Of those 1st Marine Division Marines, six have pleaded guilty at court martial appearances. Thirteen Marines have approved pre-trial agreements requesting separation from the Marines instead of court martials or waiving separation board processes. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A 7-year-old child was struck by a car while looking at Christmas lights in Ocean Beach Monday night. According to police, the incident happened around 6:30 on the 4700 block of Newport Avenue. Police say the family was looking at Christmas lights when the child didn’t see a car coming, walked out into the street and was struck by a car. The young boy was taken to the hospital with a broken leg. Police say the driver remained at the scene. Alcohol isn’t believed to be a factor. 511
