CHULA VISTA (CNS) - A former Tijuana police officer was handed a two- year state prison sentence today for his role in a planned break-in of a Chula Vista residence, which he and others believed was a stash house containing around million in drug money.Marco Quijas-Castillo, 28, pleaded guilty earlier this year to one count of conspiracy to commit robbery for the attempted January break-in.A fellow Tijuana officer, Jesus Estrada Torres, 35, was also charged in the case and is awaiting trial on a conspiracy charge.According to preliminary hearing testimony, the two officers and four other men believed a shipment of money would be delivered to the three-bedroom residence, which was actually being rented by the FBI. The defendants were informed of the supposed shipment by an undercover FBI agent, according to testimony.According to the criminal complaint, Quijas-Castillo and Torres crossed into the United States from Mexico with Ignacio Martinez-Cruz, 34, and met up in Chula Vista with fellow defendants Nicholas Jeremiah Shaw, 25, Mario Eugene Hall, 35, and Tomas Emmanuel Ramirez, 30, who allegedly traveled to Chula Vista from San Bernardino County.Castillo and Torres ``provided counter-surveillance'' at a Kohl's store in Chula Vista, while the other four men met with the undercover agent, according to the complaint.Castillo and Torres also provided surveillance near the Chula Vista residence while Shaw walked up to the house, and ``entered a code into a lockbox containing a key to enter the house,'' the complaint alleges.According to testimony, the men planned to tie up two people believed to be inside the home, then take the money, but were arrested by law enforcement upon approaching the home. 1733

(KGTV) - A Chula Vista mom says she was left holding the bag when her son's school wouldn't let her drop of her his lunch, which was needed for medical reasons.Adriana Escodbedo says the fruit, veggies, and turkey sandwich she packed for her 13-year-old son Danny on Thursday served a purpose. Early that morning, he was at the hospital getting an injection for a medical condition. Though he had some food afterward, his lunch period at Eastlake Middle School wasn't for another six hours."It's recommended they have something in their stomachs if they're getting injected with this medication," said Escobedo.RELATED: Parents concerned with short lunch times at San Diego Unified schoolsAfter Escobedo dropped him off at school, she discovered that Danny - for the first time ever - left his lunch in the car. Hours later, she went back to the school to drop it off and went to the main office."I let the two women in the office know that he took medication that day," said Escobedo.Escobedo say she wasn't allowed to drop off the lunch, but could set up an account in the cafeteria. Escobedo declined, as Danny has food sensitivities."As a mom, I just felt so frustrated. Are you kidding me? She checked her son out of the school, walked off campus, handed him the lunch, and then checked him back into the school.10News reached out to the Sweetwater Union High School District. A spokesperson says the policy is spelled out in the school handbook. The years-old policy came about because too many lunch drop-offs ended up sapping school resources and creating concerns about food spoilage. The district says there are exceptions - including medical reasons - but in this case, Escobedo didn't bring up the health issues, which she says is not true. She says staff should be trained to know the policy and any exceptions."As a mom you just want to do what's best for your child," said Escobedo.The district spokesperson tells 10News:"the front office staff will make an exception based on the situation and only on a limited basis ... the staff members who spoke with the parent said that they offered to call the student out of class so that they could give the student their lunch. The parent did not seem pleased with the responses she was being given and left. Had the parent asked for more clarification, or asked to speak with a school administrator, we could have very easily resolved this matter. Our staff also said that the parent made no mention of health/dietary issues, because again, this would have enabled staff to make an exception in this case.Nutrition is vital to student success which is why we offer a variety of options and all of them healthy and meet state nutritional guidelines. Even if a student does not have an active account, our school never deny a student a meal and the meals we provide would be the same as for a student with an active account ... If parents do have a medical/dietary concern, we ask that they let us know. CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- The City of Chula Vista is highlighting local businesses that are adapting to serving customers outdoors because of the pandemic. City officials started posting pictures on the city's Facebook and Instagram pages on Monday. Since Monday, they've highlighted barber shops, art galleries, restaurants and yoga studios. The city is calling them ABC, or Accommodating Business Champions. The plan is to feature a different business every day. Itaglo Pasta Bar was one of the businesses featured. Owner and Chef Alejandro Vicens says he was happy to see his business featured by the city. Like so many businesses, Vicens has moved everything outdoors to be able to continue to operate. The city says it plans to continue highlighting business that are moving outdoors. City staff also tells 10News they've been going around the city taking pictures of those that are doing things properly to serve their customers. On Sundays during the month of August, Chula Vista also approved for a portion of Third Avenue to be closed to traffic, so businesses can expand onto the street. 1111

(KGTV) -- Sweetwater Unified School District officials said Thursday they are investigating an incident in which someone disrupted an online classroom by playing inappropriate audio.According to a district spokesperson, the incident happened Wednesday during a session taught by an Olympian High School teacher. The incident was reported by both a student and the teacher.Audio described as "sexual" in nature was played in the virtual classroom.District spokesperson Manny Rubio told 10News that the source of the audio is unlikely to be a hacker, and that a student or students cooperated in the disruption."Each course has an access code and we believe there are other students using those codes to enter and create disruptions," said Rubio. "Our IT staff is looking to identify the specific sources."It's unknown if the school or district requires students to use cameras to attend the online classroom.The district's 25 campuses matriculated over 40,000 students for online classes this school year, which started Monday. Students have been assigned equipment and software to access their virtual classes, including Google Meet and Microsoft Teams. Rubio said that since Monday, there have a few similar incidences of disruption but that a great majority of students are having positive experiences. CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- Police arrested a man on suspicion of breaking into a Wells Fargo bank in Chula Vista early Thursday morning.Bank security personnel contacted Chula Vista police at around 2 a.m. after they saw a man break the front window at the branch on 1232 Broadway and enter the business.According to police, security cameras showed the man “going through the drawers behind the counters.”Police surrounded the bank as some officers entered the business. Officers arrested the man, later identified as 25-year-old Rene Torres, without incident.Police said officers at the scene determined Torres “pried open most of the cash drawers but was unable to access the vault or currency storage areas. He did cause a lot of damage to the interior of the building.”ABC 10News learned officers discovered several rolls of coins in the suspect’s backpack that police presumed to be from the bank.Torres was arrested on suspicion of burglary and booked at CVPD headquarters.
