(KGTV) -- While most students in San Diego County are distance learning, there are some schools that are doing a combination of virtual and in-person learning.One school in the South Bay is working with a hybrid system that makes sure all students get the same learning opportunities.St. Rose of Lima Catholic School in Chula Vista welcomed students back on campus a month ago. To keep class sizes small and following state guidelines, they split the older graders into separate classrooms.But not everyone returned to campus, as dozens of families chose to stay at home and do distance learning.So, the school put together a hybrid system that allows all students to participate in real time teaching no matter where they are.With the use of technology, the teacher can see the students at home and the students that are in both classrooms.Sixth-grade teacher Michael Hart said with the help of Zoom, a camera, and classroom speakers, he can engage all students in daily lessons.“I have a Logitech camera that tracks me so it will follow me around the classroom or if I’m behind my desk. It’s just a simple remote,” Hart said.He also uses an app that makes sure every student is called upon equally, so they can all participate in class discussions.Sixth-grader Zachary Lastrella told ABC 10News, “If Mr. Hart asks us a question either in here or in the Zoom or in the other room, then we can answer the question.”As for tests, all of the students complete those using their laptops via Google Forms.Hart added, “It’s able to randomize the questions, whether it’s multiple choice or fill in the blanks or an essay response, and it does come down to academic honesty.”Students say physically their “classrooms” may be different now, but the important elements are still there.Devraaj Jani, a sixth grade students, said, “We’re still in one class, and we’re still together as one.” 1908

CHULA VISTA (CNS) - UTC Aerospace Systems plans to wind down manufacturing at its Chula Vista aircraft plant beginning early next year, eliminating around 300 jobs, it was reported Friday.The company -- a division of Farmington, Connecticut-based conglomerate United Technologies -- said the decision stems from ending production of certain commercial aircraft models, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported.The Chula Vista plant builds aerodynamic engine pods and mounts for customers such as Boeing and Airbus.UTC Aerospace plans to keep an after-market spare parts distribution, engineering test labs and administrative jobs in Chula Vista, according to the Union-Tribune."We remain committed to being in Chula Vista," Stacey MacNeil, vice president of communications for UTC Aerospace told the newspaper. "There will still be 1,500 jobs there. We are not shutting down the entire location."The closure of manufacturing, however, will end production of aircraft components at the plant, which has been building planes and supplying aircraft sub-systems since Fred Rohr founded Rohr Aircraft Co. in 1940, according to the Union-Tribune."We recognize the impact this decision will have on our employees and their families, and will not begin the wind-down until 2019," the company said in a statement. "We expect the entire process to take place over a two-year period."The layoffs include about 265 sheet metal workers who are members of the International Association of Machinist and Aerospace Workers, according to the Union-Tribune. Non-union supervisors, purchasers and other salaried workers involved in manufacturing also will lose their jobs.In July, UTC Aerospace Systems notified the union of the planned shutdown, according to the Union-Tribune.The first round of layoffs is expected in the first quarter of next year, with a second round slated late in the year. The final round of layoffs would occur in the fall of 2020.The company is looking to vacate 725,000 square feet of manufacturing space -- leaving buildings on nearly 60 percent of its 86-acre campus vacant, the Union-Tribune reported.Initial negotiations have begun between the company and the union over severance, benefits and training, J.P. Fletcher, area director for District 725 of the International Association of Machinist and Aerospace workers, told the newspaper."In this case there is a sister facility in Riverside that we are looking to see if there are any openings where we can get our people transferred up there," Fletcher told the newspaper. CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - This week Chula Vista Police shut down yet another illegal cannabis dispensary, an ongoing problem that's grown in recent years. While the city doesn't allow any cannabis sales at the moment, police believe there's roughly a dozen or more operating illegally in the city.“One of the challenges with unlicensed, illegal cannabis business is that they move and they change. The number of facilities is always changing, the location of facilities changes quite frequently," said Captain Phil Collum.Captain Collum says their most recent bust was one of the most egregious cases he's seen, from the number of cannabis products to security measures.“I was standing inside the facility and was shocked at what they had done," said Collum. "The windows were sealed shut with metal plating; the front door was actually, had a welded security grate that was locked closed, it had pretty much sealed off any emergency evacuation routes to this facility.”He says if there were a fire or sudden emergency in the building people could have been trapped. Captain Collum said they were alerted to the illegal operation by neighbor complaints. "It’s so important that community contact us and let us know where they believe an illegal cannabis for marijuana business might be located.”Chula Vista PD partnered with Chula Vista's Office of the City Attorney and the Code Enforcement Department to serve a civil abatement warrant for the illegal cannabis dispensary. “I’m not frustrated with the process, what’s frustrating quite honestly is people are taking advantage of our community.”Captain Collum urges the public to continue notifying authorities when they spot illegal businesses popping up in the city. 1731

(KGTV) -- The Sweetwater Union High School District Board voted Wednesday to cut more than 220 educators and place its beleaguered superintendent on paid leave.Staff cuts include educators and all librarians. In all, the board voted to eliminate 223 employees in hopes of balancing its budget.The board cited a decline in enrollment for the cuts, but said if enrollment goes up, librarians would be the first to return.RELATED: Sweetwater Union High School District votes to cut over 200 jobsThe vote ratifies an earlier referendum in which the board voted to lay off nearly 240 employees and staff members in February. The district's planned cuts to jobs and programs had been widely panned by staff and the public, with many calling on officials to consider salary cuts instead. She earned her doctorate degree in education from San Diego State University in 2010, according to her professional online profile. CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- Homeowners in Eastlake are frustrated with a plan to develop a storage facility near their homes. The proposed location is in an empty space between Eastlake High School and Antigua, a gated community of townhomes. The facility would be a recreational storage facility, for boats, cars and containers. The City of Chula Vista's planning department would have to approve the proposal. Homeowners are hoping they don't. Neighbors like Carmen Bermen say the plans are going to lower their property values and attract the wrong crowd. On Saturday, they started posting warning flyers around their community to warn other neighbors. Bermen was the first homeowner to notice the plans. She says the city had sent out two notices in 2016. The last notice arrived on Thanksgiving week. 10News obtained a copy of that notice letting homeowners know they had until November 26th to send in any written comments or petitions. The vote would take place on November 27th. After emailing the city, residents say officials told them they'd have a public hearing in January on the issue, instead of voting on it in closed session. 10News reached out to the city for comment on this issue, a spokesperson told us it's up to the planning department to put the item on the agenda for the community to go and express their concerns during public comment.
