INDIANAPOLIS —Indiana teachers were hit with pellets during an active shooter training at a school, the Indiana State Teachers Association said Wednesday.Exact details on when or where this happened are unclear, but an ISTA representative testified in front of the Senate Education and Career Development Committee that some of its members were injured by the pellets.The representative, Gail Zeharalis, said teachers were taken into a room four at a time, told to crouch down, and were shot “execution-style” with the pellets. She said welts appeared on their bodies, and blood was drawn.Zeharalis’ testimony was to push state lawmakers amend a bill to include limits and safety precautions during active shooter training in schools. The teachers were “terrified,” but were told not to tell anyone what happened, ISTA says. The Department of Veterans Affairs estimates that between 11 and 20 percent of those who served in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars return home with PTSD. The V.A. said that 12 percent of Desert Storm veterans and 15 percent of Vietnam War vets also have PTSD. While a number of instance can trigger someone to have PTSD, the loud bangs that fireworks cause can be of particular concern for combat veterans.The V.A. says that PTSD can cause veterans to have upsetting memories, feel on edge, or have trouble sleeping. Since 2015, the non-profit group Military with PTSD has distributed yard signs informing neighbors that a veteran with PTSD lives nearby. The signs state "Combat Veteran Lives Here, Please Be Courteous with Fireworks."The signs are distributed nationwide, and can be ordered online. “Courteous to me means remembering that you are not the only one living in your neighborhood," said Jon Dykes, the veteran who made the first sign. "America celebrates our independence on the 4th of July. Not the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 6th, and 7th of July. Some fireworks are expected, and that’s OK. His mom told CNN that Logan's physical therapist suggested a gait trainer to help him with walking, but they did not think insurance would cover it and wondered whether it would arrive in a reasonable time.So she and her husband turned to YouTube, where they found a tutorial to make one out of PVC pipe."I found a video that looked pretty easy and got the list and took it to Home Depot to see if they had everything we needed," Christian Moore said.When they arrived, she asked a store employee she knew if anyone could help them with the supply list. Christian said what happened next shocked her. She was met by a store manager and another employee who came to help."They started getting the parts together and told us they would put it together and would not charge us for it," she said. "They told us to go get ice cream and come back in an hour."When they returned the walker was finished and even included Logan's name."I couldn't believe they were willing to do that. It took everything I had not to cry because it hasn't been an easy road for my son. He has had a hard time doing things that would be easy for most children his age," Moore said.One of the men who helped make the walker, Jeff Anderson, posted about the experience on his Facebook page and said, "Everyone was crying to see Logan walk around with the biggest smile on his face...Thank to all that help and for being a blessing to this family and to this little guy.""There are so many children out there with hypotonia, more than you would think," Christian Moore added. He added most Americans are seeing a smaller tax return, or owe the government for the first time, but they received more take-home pay during the year. To avoid having to pay next year, Rigney suggested looking at your withholding. It's the amount of money your employer keeps from your paycheck to pay the government on your behalf. You can fill out a W4 to change your withholding. Depending on your changes, come this time next year, you may be getting a check instead of writing one. "[If you don't, the amount you owe] might even be a little bit worse just because of the way the withholding tables were implemented last year for only half of the year. This year, it will be for the full year," Rigney said.
