New mandates for stores, cities and regions require many of us to wear masks in public, but researchers say it's important to treat them like a biohazard.Professor and Department Chair of Community, Environment and Policy at the University of Arizona Public Health College Kelly Reynolds said, while in public, the virus can get on the front of the mask and live on it for several days."By design, the mask could really be contaminated, so we recommend that people think of their masks as a biohazard," Reynolds said.The virus can live on surgical and N95 masks for up to seven days. Normally, they would be thrown out after one use, but a shortage in Personal Protective Equipment prevents that."You can’t just throw them in the washer machine -- that would destroy their fibers," Reynolds said. "For those (N95 and surgical), the best recommendation is to let the natural course of the virus dying off to run its course, so the recommendation is to take those masks and put them in a paper bag and wait seven days before you use them again."More commonly though, she said people in the community are wearing homemade, cloth masks, which can hold the virus for two days.She said one advantage in Arizona to clean those is the summer heat, which means leaving it in a car for at least 20 minutes."When it is 110 outside, in no time our cars will get really hot, so the coronavirus can survive in our cars for 20 minutes in up to 130 degrees and five minutes at 150 degrees, so that can be a very effective tool for decontaminating our masks," Reynolds said.She recommends removing the masks from the elastic around the ears using your pinkies. She said this is because those are the fingers you're least likely to use touching your face.After that, make sure to put it in a central location and sanitize or wash your hands."If you think about why we are wearing the mask in the first place, it is to prevent our exposure," Reynolds said. NEW YORK (AP) — Actor Carol Sutton, a fixture on stages in her native New Orleans, has died from complications from COVID-19. New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell announced the death. Sutton was 76. Her roles included the 1989 comedy “Steel Magnolias” and the TV series “Queen Sugar.” After making her acting debut in the late 1960s in Dashiki Project Theatre productions, Sutton appeared in productions such as “The Last Madam,” “Native Tongues” and “A Raisin in the Sun.” Her recent credits included work on the remake of the series “Roots,” “Treme,” “True Detective” and “Lovecraft Country.” 599

NORFOLK, Va. (AP) — A company’s plan to retrieve the Titanic’s radio has sparked a debate over whether the famous shipwreck still holds human remains. Lawyers for the U.S. government have raised the question during their ongoing court battle to block the planned expedition. They cite archaeologists who say remains could still be there. The lawyers say RMS Titanic Inc. fails to consider that in its dive plan. But the company says human remains likely would’ve been noticed after roughly 200 dives to the site. NEW YORK CITY — Fire marshals arrested a 36-year-old man accused of setting off fireworks that burned down a Brooklyn home last month, officials said Thursday.Officials said that the video shows Damien Bend igniting the illegal fireworks on June 24. Bend is charged with arson, FDNY Commissioner Daniel Nigro said."Illegal fireworks pose significant dangers to the safety of New Yorkers and their property," Nigro said. "Our Fire Marshals will continue to actively enforce the laws relating to illegal possession and sales of fireworks in New York City."Bend allegedly set off numerous fireworks, sending one of them through a window at around 9:25 p.m. last Friday night. Officials say he continued to light them, even as flames could be seen through the window of the 51st Street home.Video shows that one of the people with Bend appeared to be smoking a cigarette and filming himself as he shot off the fireworks.His friend, also filming himself, eventually noticed the house was burning at 9:32 p.m. — about seven minutes after the fire started.The video showed one of the men trying to contain the fire with a garden hose, to no avail."They were doing it in such a confined area it was just bound to happen," said FDNY Captain Michael Koco, director of safety education. "It was a recipe for disaster."The FDNY has set up one of a number of informational booths across the city to inform residents of the dangers of setting off fireworks, given the dramatic spike in complaints."A lot of times, the people that are being harmed are the bystanders," Koco said.In the last nine days, fire marshals in New York have arrested 17 people and confiscated nearly ,000 worth of illegal fireworks.It took 60 firefighters to knock down the blaze started by fireworks at 51st Street."They're illegal for a reason," Koco said.
