CHICAGO, Ill. – According to the Mueller report, during the last election, Russian hackers breached the computer network of the Illinois State Board of Elections, gaining access to information on millions of registered voters. It was just one example of the vulnerabilities in the U.S. election system.Intelligence officials and security experts agree that cyber-attacks like the one’s perpetrated during the 2016 presidential election are not a thing of the past.“There's no reason to believe that attacks like that would not happen in this election,” said Jake Braun, executive director at the Cyber Policy Initiative at the University of Chicago. He’s also the author of “Democracy in Danger: How Hackers and Activists Exposed Fatal Flaws in the Election System.”Braun says the two most serious vulnerabilities lie in voter registration databases and election night returns data. He says the hacking of either could cause chaos at the polls or spawn conspiracy theories about the election’s outcome.“We're already seeing ransomware attacks on databases and we're already seeing things like fake websites to mimic election websites being put up,” said Braun.Mary Hanley, Associate Director of the Cyber Policy Initiative, says they are trying to help protect against those kinds of attacks. For the first time through their cyber surge program, they’re connecting a network of 250 volunteer cybersecurity technologists with U.S. state and local election officials ahead of the 2020 election.“We can help answer basic questions about general cyber hygiene, but we can also help election administrators understand how to remediate vulnerabilities that they've already identified,” she said.Volunteer cyber technologists like New Mexico-based Chris Perkins say election officials need to be able to see where potential assaults can present themselves.“Once you have that visibility on your attack surfaces, then you can start to detect those anomalies and things that start to look like suspicious activity,” said Perkins. In a highly polarized atmosphere, cyber experts say it’s even more important to ensure that security breaches are quickly identified and contained. 2176

CARLSBAD, Calif. (KGTV) - A Carlsbad high school teacher accused of "inappropriate conduct" is denying the allegations that has forced him out of the classroom for months.About two months ago, senior Rafa Fabito said his film teacher at La Costa Canyon High School, Speed Farris, was a no-show."I thought he was just absent," said Fabito. But that absence continued without an explanation -- until now. An email was sent home to parents earlier this week confirming Harris is currently assigned to the San Dieguito Union High School District's Administrative Office amid an investigation into allegations of "inappropriate conduct toward former students." Across the La Costa Canyon campus, there was a sense of disbelief."This doesn't jive with what his typical personality is like. I wouldn't expect this from him," said Fabito.Early this school year, student Mary Harris took a literature class taught by Farris."He liked to joke around but never made anyone feel uncomfortable. Just a happy, fine guy," said Harris. Some parents told 10News they were upset it took months for the school district to inform them. As for the teacher at the center of the probe, he agreed to talk to 10News. By phone, Farris told 10News he couldn't say much, but did maintain his innocence. "These allegations are false. They're unwarranted. I've cooperated with the district investigation as much as possible. This whole process is ruining my life and my career," said Farris. 10News reached out to the San Dieguito Union High School District to find out why it took several months to inform parents, and is waiting to hear back. A San Diego County Sheriff's Department spokesperson said a criminal case has been sent over the county District Attorney's Office for review. 1764

CAPE CORAL, Fla. - It all started with a high school assignment.Megan O’Grady says she had to write about a topic that she felt passionate about in her life.As the daughter of a law enforcement officer who had recently learned of the deaths of five officers during a 2016 protest in Dallas, it wasn’t hard for her to share what she was feeling at the time. That paper would soon turn into a passion project and the nonprofit, Blue Line Bears.Four years later, the group has dispersed more than 700 teddy bears - sewn with the uniforms of fallen law enforcement officers and given to loved ones that have been left behind.“Taking that uniform shirt and making it into something that can be held and cuddled...it gives them comfort and a little bit of their loved one back,” the 18-year-old tells FOX 4.She says prior to this year, Blue Line Bears filled five to ten requests per week from agencies across the country.“Now, it can be up to like 20 or 30”.Megan’s father is Master Sergeant Patrick O’Grady with the Cape Coral Police Department. He says agencies from all over reach out to the group for bears.O’Grady says they also use the website Officer Down Memorial Page to keep track of impacted families.According to the site, there was 148 line of duty deaths in 2019.This year and at the time of this story, the website reports that the number is already 247.The site says most of those deaths are related to COVID-19 and gunfire.“At any time, we can have over 100 shirts waiting to be turned into bears,” O’Grady says. With an increase in demand comes the need for an increase in space. That’s why the nonprofit is now expanding to an official location in Cape Coral.Megan says the new space will serve as a place to hold meetings and a go-to location for the community to purchases merchandise. She says she's most excited that it will also provide a bigger workspace to prepare the keepsakes that bring support to many families.Because as Megan, now in her first year of college, says, “There’s always a lot of bears to be made.”The O'Gradys say the new location will be complete by the end of the year. The address for the new storefront is 3032 Santa Barbara Boulevard.Click here for more information about Blue Line Bears. This story was first reported by Shari Armstrong at WFTX in Fort Myers, Florida. 2315

CHICAGO (AP) — Chicago's Second City comedy theater is up for sale. The sale, announced Tuesday, is the second in the company's 60-year history. In a statement released by investment banker Houlihan Lokey, co-owner Andrew Alexander said a sale presents the opportunity for Second City to continue to succeed well into the future. Second City suspended all its shows and classes in early March due to the COVID-19 pandemic until further notice. Second City faced controversy in June when Alexander stepped down from the training and performance troupe due to allegations of racism within the company. Second City was an early training ground for "Saturday Night Live" players including John Belushi, Dan Aykroyd, Gilda Radner, and Chris Redd. 749
