A new Congress is about to be sworn in. Democrats are taking over the House, and Republicans are adding to their majority in the Senate. They've already got a lot on their plate. First, there's a pretty good chance we're going to enter this new session of Congress in the midst of a partial government shutdown. As of Thursday afternoon, President Trump and Democrats were standing their ground. They'll have to come to an agreement about border funding which could spill into another issue: immigration.The president is asking for billion to fund construction of a wall along the southern border. Some Democratic members are hoping likely-Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi will negotiate a deal exchanging border funding for those living in limbo under Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA, and those under Temporary Protected Status. Now that Democrats have the House, many won't feel the need to give into the president's demands. House Democrats are also planning to move quickly to take up gun reform. They plan to advance several bills within the first 100 days. Most notably, Democratic Rep. Mike Thompson plans to introduce a bipartisan bill mandating universal background checks on all gun sales. Some GOP House members have already voiced support. Still, the Republican Senate likely won't pass any high-profile gun control bills. But given the shootings in Pittsburgh, Parkland, Santa Fe and Thousand Oaks in 2018, Democrats feel public momentum is on their side. Health care may be a place to find some common ground in 2019. Democrats and Republicans have said they're interested in looking at prescription drug prices. That's probably where the harmony will end. Republicans still want to gut the Affordable Care Act as Democrats look to bolster it. Of course, there will be many investigations. Democrats will be looking into Russia, the Trump family and its finances, potential conflicts of interest, James Comey's firing and the dealings of many of Trump's associates, just to name a few.There's lots to do in this new Congress, but with a divided government, there may not be room for each party to accomplish its goals. 2195

A right-wing political action committee has taken credit for staging a viral video taken at a town hall meeting held by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-NY, in which an attendee suggested that eating babies was a solution to the climate crisis.The video was taken Thursday at a town hall held by Ocasio-Cortez in her home district of Queens, New York. After asking the crowd for questions, a woman stood up and began speaking."We only have a few months left. I love that you support the New Green Deal, but it's not getting rid of fossil fuels. It's not going to solve the problem fast enough," the woman said. "A Swedish professor has suggested eating dead people, but that's not fast enough. So I think your new campaign slogan should be this: We have to start eating babies."The unidentified woman was eventually led out of the town hall. Ocasio-Cortez did not respond to the woman's suggestion but instead pivoted to fighting climate change.The video eventually got the attention of President Donald Trump. Amazon has turned Prime Day into a summer shopping holiday — and rival retailers like Target want to claim a piece of that spending next week.Target is running "Deal Days" on Monday and Tuesday, July 15 and 16, the same dates as Amazon's two-day Prime Day event. Target said it will offer 40% off some furniture, 30% off some small appliances and cookware, and other deals on toys, sporting goods and bedding.Prime Day has become Amazon's annual summer show of force in the shopping world. Amazon uses the savings event to spotlight its own products and hook new members on Prime, its 9 annual free-shipping program. A school bus driver was arrested after she overdosed while driving and crashed into a tree, Newark police said.The driver, Lisa Byrd, was transporting a dozen students from 14th Avenue School in Newark when the vehicle crashed into a tree on Wednesday, officials said in a statement.When first responders arrived, police said they revived the 57-year-old woman with Narcan -- a drug that instantly reverses the effects of overdose from heroin and other opioids.The students, ages 5 to 13, were not injured, police said.Byrd, who was taken to a local hospital, is facing 12 charges of endangering the welfare of a child, driving while impaired and possession of drug paraphernalia, police said.It was not immediately clear whether Byrd has an attorney."Endangering the lives of Newark children is something we will not tolerate," said Newark Mayor Ras J.
