LOS ANGELES (AP) -- California's overwhelmed hospitals are setting up makeshift extra beds for coronavirus patients, and a handful of facilities in hard-hit Los Angeles County are drawing up emergency plans in case they have to limit how many people receive life-saving care. The number of people hospitalized across California with confirmed COVID-19 infections is more than double the state's previous peak, reached in July.A state model forecasts the total could hit 75,000 patients by mid-January.Dr. Christina Ghaly, Los Angeles County's health services director, said plans for rationing care are not in place yet, but they need to be established because "the worst is yet to come." 695

Logan Stiner was just 18 years old when he died in 2014 — only three days short of graduating from Keystone High School in Lagrange, Ohio. The cause of death: a lethal amount of caffeine in his system.Stiner, who was a wrestler, had taken powdered caffeine often used as a pre-workout boost. According to the FDA, taking one teaspoon is equivalent to drinking 28 cups of coffee at once.Stiner died from cardiac arrhythmia and a seizure as a result of taking the powdered caffeine, according to the coroner.“He was funny, he was smart, he was witty, he was athletic, he had a lot of success on the wrestling mats. He was an all-American kid, the kind of kid you want your son to grow up to be,” said Keystone High School wrestling coach Don Griswold. “To lose a kind soul, a loving soul, full of life like Logan is beyond tough. I still don’t quite know how to sum it all up."Stiner's parents, Dennis and Katie, urged lawmakers to ban the sale?of powdered caffeine. Now, the FDA is taking action, making it illegal to sell bulk powdered caffeine to consumers.“Certainly, this is a passionate subject for Katie and Dennis, and I applaud their efforts and their ongoing efforts to fight for our young people and to prevent future victims,” Griswold said. “The FDA has taken the right steps in protecting our kids and making sure that this potentially lethal product doesn't get into the hands of kids who don’t know what they’re taking and what it does."Senator Sherrod Brown, who helped lead the push for the ban, said in a statement that the FDA ban will “finally help ensure other Ohio families never have to suffer the same way the Stiners did. 1693

LONDONDERRY, N.H. — The coronavirus has reached into the heart of the White House once more, less than a week before Election Day, as it scorches the nation and the president’s top aide says “we're not going to control the pandemic.”Officials are scoffing at the notion of dialing back in-person campaigning despite positive tests from several aides to Vice President Mike Pence, who leads the White House coronavirus task force.White House chief of staff Mark Meadows was pressed by CNN to explain why the pandemic cannot be reined and responded, "because it is a contagious virus just like the flu.” 609

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Golden Globes is refusing to let the pandemic get in the way of its party. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association says the ceremony will be held Feb. 28 in Beverly Hills, California, with previously announced hosts Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. The Golden Globes positions itself as the freewheeling start to awards season, set in hotel ballroom that's arranged more like an oversized dinner party with drinks. Exactly which movies and TV shows will be eligible for honors remains to be seen, given the virus-caused delay in production that's only now easing.Eligibility rules will be announced in the coming weeks. 642

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Lawyers for California Rep. Duncan Hunter want a federal judge to reject an attempt by prosecutors to introduce evidence that the congressman used campaign funds to finance a string of extramarital relationships, a court filing said Friday.Prosecutors are seeking permission "to focus the jury's attention on Mr. Hunter's infidelity" with evidence that isn't necessary for a jury to evaluate the case, they wrote. To allow it would present "substantial risk of unfair prejudice."Allegations about the married Republican congressman's affairs were outlined in a government court filing Monday, connected to charges he and his wife illegally spent more than 0,000 in campaign funds on trips, meals and other personal expenses.Prosecutors are seeking permission to introduce details of the romantic affairs in U.S. District Court in San Diego, which they say are necessary to "demonstrate Hunter's ... intent to break the law and to establish his motive to embezzle from his campaign."Margaret Hunter pleaded guilty this month to one corruption count. Duncan Hunter has said prosecutors have targeted him for political reasons. The trial is scheduled for September. In the motion, Hunter's lawyers argued that "whether or not Mr. Hunter has an intimate or strictly platonic relationship with a particular individual does not tend to prove any material point in the government's case."The said "nearly every expense" listed in the prosecutors' motion Monday seeking to introduce the evidence "was incurred in connection with a legitimate political activity."They said the allegations are so controversial "that merely filing the motion has tainted the jury pool against Mr. Hunter.""However unpopular the notion of a married man mixing business with pleasure, the government cannot simply dismiss the reality that Mr. Hunter's relationships ... often served an overtly political purpose that would not have existed irrespective of his occupation," they added.Separately, Hunter's lawyers are seeking to dismiss the indictment and move the trial out of San Diego County. 2093
