WATCH LIVE:LAKE HUGHES (CNS) - A fast-moving brush fire quickly scorched about 10,000 acres in the Lake Hughes area Wednesday, burning what appeared to be homes and prompting a multi-agency effort and mandatory evacuations for at least 100 homes. The Lake Fire was reported at about 3:30 p.m. near North Lake Hughes Road and Pine Canyon Road in the Angeles National Forest, according to Marvin Lim of the Los Angeles County Fire Department, which was battling the blaze with Angeles National Forest crews, as well as assistance from the Los Angeles, Culver City, Beverly Hills and Santa Monica fire departments. The fire west of Palmdale had a "rapid rate of spread," amid temperatures in the mid-90s, low humidity and gusty winds, according to the U.S. Forest Service. The forest service and county fire departments quickly called in second-alarm responses.By 4:30 p.m., the flames had burned 400 acres, and officials said the fire had the potential to burn 1,000 acres, according the Los Angeles County Fire Department. That quickly changed two hours later, when the flames exploded across an estimated 10,000 acres, with no containment. The fire was entirely on federal land as of 6:30 p.m., according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department. The sheriff's department issued mandatory evacuation orders affecting at least 100 homes, and an evacuation center was set up for displaced residents at Highland High School in Palmdale.By 7:15 p.m., the flames had jumped Pine Canyon Road, two miles west of Lake Hughes Road, and shortly after, flames were seen on aerial footage burning what appeared to be homes in the area.ABC7 reported at 7:20 p.m. that homes had started to burn in the fire. 1698

Waymo is starting to let the public take rides in its self-driving vans. This is the first commercial self-driving ride service to launch publicly, according to Waymo. For now, Waymo's definition of "the public" is a couple hundred pre-selected individuals in the Phoenix area. But Waymo is calling this is a small but important first step to launching an actual driverless ride sharing service. These initial users were all part of Waymo's "Early Rider" test program, so they've ridden in these vans before. The big difference is now they'll be allowed to invite others to ride with them — as many as four people can fit in the van — and they'll be able to speak publicly about the experience, including posting about it on social media. These customers will not be stepping into vans with empty driver's seats, though. While Waymo has given totally driverless rides to people as part of the private "Early Rider" program, for these more public rides, a Waymo employee will be in the driver's seat ready to take over if needed.Waymo is a subsidiary of Alphabet, Google's parent company. The service, called Waymo One, will operate 24 hours a day giving rides in the Phoenix area. Over time, the service will expand to cover more cities and be available to more riders than just the test group, Waymo CEO John Krafcik wrote in a blog post.Rides will be requested through an Uber-like smartphone app Waymo has created that will allow users to select pickup and drop-off locations and see a price estimate for the ride. The pricing strategy is part of what Waymo is working out with these more public rides. The pricing and software has been under development in the more secretive "Early Rider" program but will undergo more development in the public Waymo One program, a Waymo spokesperson said.Up until now, much of the research into autonomous driving has been around figuring out technical issues, said Karl Brauer, publisher of Kelley Blue Book and Autotrader. Waymo is taking another step in working through some of the other challenges, such as creating a service that's easy to use and meets riders' needs."Waymo's early rider program is allowing the company to identify these issues, and its new Waymo One service will expand the company's feedback system into a real-world business application," Brauer said. "In the race for the self-driving car, this information is invaluable."A company called May Mobility has been offering driverless rides to the general public in select Midwestern cities, but those rides have been on regular fixed routes in vehicles that travel no more than 25 miles an hour. 2613

WELLINGTON, Fla. - Golf courses and grade-schoolers don’t always go hand in hand but for one 6-year-old in Wellington, it’s a perfect match. The first-grader in question is Brian “Little B” Kelley. He has a long list of hobbies, but at the top of the list is golf.“Every night I have dreams about golf,” said Kelley. He picked it up from his dad, Brian “Big B” Kelley, an admittedly average golfer. The two spent plenty of weekends watching pro golfers on TV before Little B could even talk. Little B caught the bug, big time.“I just watch the pros and learn it,” he said.It mystified the adults around him, including his dad who said, “ next thing you know he’s got this amazing swing that I want.”There’s more to this story than a kid with a ton of talent, "Little B’s" parents Brian and Elizabeth are open about his adoption in Kansas City six years ago when he was three weeks old.“He was five pounds at a month old so I had him in the palm of my hand,” said Big B.His mom, Elizabeth Kelley, describes him as the gift that keeps on giving.“It just is incredible and yes he’s got an incredible talent with golf but that’s not the thing that makes him special, it’s him and who he is,” she said.A focused flexible and driven athlete, his caddy Chris Arbour says he brings an "X factor" to the game and that’s become a priority.“Be kind to people,” is the way Little B describes it.Arbour said, “I’ll be his friend for the rest of my life if he lets me.”He says it’s already made him a better person. And it can't be ignored for Little B, it made him quite the player. He’s ranked 24th in the world with US Kids Golf, 3rd in the Southeast Region, and 4th in the state. If you ask him though he’ll tell you having fun is number one. This story was first reported by Chris Gilmore at WPTV in West Palm Beach, Florida. 1821

WASHINGTON (AP) — Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has told fellow Republicans that he's warned the White House not to divide Republicans by sealing a lopsided pre-election COVID-19 relief deal with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi — even as he publicly says he'd slate any such agreement for a vote. McConnell made his remarks during a private lunch with fellow Republicans on Tuesday, three people familiar with his remarks said, requesting anonymity because the session was private. The Kentucky Republican appears worried that an agreement between Pelosi and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin would drive a wedge between Republicans. Pelosi and Mnuchin have arrived at a critical phase of their talks if any relief is going to be enacted by Election Day.Pelosi spokesman Drew Hammill said on Twitter that “both sides are serious about finding a compromise" after Pelosi and Mnuchin spoke for about 45 minutes on Tuesday."Today’s deadline enabled the Speaker and Secretary to see that decisions could be reached and language could be exchanged, demonstrating that both sides are serious about finding a compromise," Hammill said in a tweet.According to CNBC, Pelosi and Mnuchin plan to speak again on Wednesday."On several open questions, the Speaker and the Secretary called for the committee chairs to work to resolve differences about funding levels and language," Hammill added on Twitter. "With this guidance, the two principals will continue their discussions tomorrow afternoon upon the Secretary's return." 1525
