Hundreds of passengers on an Amtrak train that became disconnected will have quite a story to tell around the Thanksgiving table. The Montreal to New York train was traveling near Albany, New York, at about 7:20 p.m. Wednesday when two cars separated from the engine, Amtrak spokesman Jason Abrams said in a statement. Of the 287 passengers and crew, he said, no one was injured. The passengers were transferred to a new train, Abrams said.CNN reached out to Amtrak for further details but has not heard back.Billy Osher-Dugan was traveling to spend Thanksgiving with his girlfriend when he saw the cars separate."It was packed," he said. "There were hardly any seats available."He heard a noise and turned around to see cars behind him rip apart from the train, he said. That's when one passenger pulled the emergency brake to stop the train and others -- upon smelling smoke -- grabbed the fire extinguisher.Luckily, he said, there was no fire and everyone was OK.Helen Mary Crane was with her son on the way to spend the holiday with her daughter. Crane said two cars were added to the train when she boarded in Rensselaer, New York, and that she and her son were told to sit in the first of the additions.Crane's car was one of the two to break off."As far as being with my son," she said. "I was terrified when I saw the sparks and smelled burning and then realized our car was no longer attached. I thought we would derail or be hit by the other train."She said she credits the man who pulled the emergency brake on the runaway cars for the safety of everyone. She identified him as Reuben Clarke, a student at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute."He saved our lives tonight," Crane said. "Our car broke off from the rest of the train and was picking up speed. There was no Amtrak personnel in our car. Reuben calmly went into action and pulled the emergency brake at the front of the car. Thankful he was on the train with my son and I."The National Transportation Safety Board will not investigate since there were no injuries or a derailment, board spokesman Nicholas Worrell said.New York State Police are investigating the incident. 2147

If you've ever wanted to be an FBI agent, but don't have a law enforcement background, now is your chance. FBI Supervisory Special Agent Martin Hellmer says in the cyber division, there's a place for you."There is a critical need for cyber minded people, technically trained people, across the board," he said.In the current day and age, Hellmer says people might not realize how much of a role technology, the Web, and cyber topics play in the FBI's ability to successfully investigate criminal matters."Most of what we do, whether we're investigating a bank robbery, a fugitive case, or a computer intrusion, a sophisticated computer intrusion, involves some sort of technical component, and therefore requires some technical know-how," Hellmer said. "Behind every computer or any smart device is a person. So there's always a human component to any sort of crime that that person might be conducting using their computer, smartphone, or any other sort of device."There is a big difference between cyber crime, and cyber warfare, according to the supervisory special agent."Cyber crime entails some sort of victimization of someone else. We usually think of that as financial victimization, or harassment, that sort of thing," he said. "Cyber warfare would entail a national security component."Now, more than ever according to Hellmer, the FBI is in need of cyber-minded people."System administration, general information technology, software engineering, network engineering, computer science," he said. "Any of those disciplines, or a background in any of those disciplines, is a need for the FBI right now."As cyber criminals are getting smarter and better at what they do, Hellmer says by recruiting bright minds, the FBI can always stay one step ahead of them."As criminals become more advanced in technical know-how and committing crimes online," he said. "We at the FBI try to remain one step ahead of them by hiring technically-minded people, smart people, who know cyber."If you'd like to learn more about careers at the FBI, click here. 2087

In a critical situation where minutes determine life or death, you may think emergency medical services offer your best chance of survival. However, a Johns Hopkins trauma surgeon doesn't think that's always the case.“If it were me, and I know a lot about trauma, drive me to the trauma center as fast as you can,” said Dr. Elliott Haut, associate professor of surgery and emergency medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and senior author of a new study that evaluates emergency transport for shooting and stabbing victims.Haut and colleagues examined data from trauma centers within the 100 most populous U.S. metro areas and compared ambulance versus private vehicle transportation and the relationship between transport-mode and in-hospital mortality. He was not surprised by what he saw.“Patients who are injured with penetrating trauma — so stab wounds and gunshot wounds, in urban settings, so these are in the City — have improved outcomes and improved mortality if they're brought to the trauma center by private vehicle compared to emergency medical services, EMS,” Haut said. The keyword is trauma center; not all hospitals are equipped to handle walk-in patients with these kinds of injuries. And they are injuries that require immediate surgery. The study does not cover cardiac arrest where the most important thing is CPR and a defibrillator.“When we control for all those things, the rapid transport of patients by private vehicle makes a big difference,” Haut said.According to the study, 62 percent of patients are less likely to die when transported by private vehicle compared to EMS.Dr. Gabe Kelen has seen many of these walk-in patients at the Johns Hopkins Hospital emergency department.“You're waiting, waiting, waiting, the ambulance people get there, they do certain things, very skilled, it's all being done out there. Then they load you up, drive through traffic, they get here, that can take twice as long. It sometimes really is better to get you here, let us start doing our more definitive thing that we can do only in the emergency department,” said Kelen, director of the emergency department. He agrees time is of the essence, but also cautions that this is one study.“If you get multiple people being dropped off at one of the smaller hospitals, they may not have the staff to do everything that a place like ours can do so let the system work,” Kelen said. The current standard of care in Maryland is to wait for EMS to arrive. Dr. Richard Alcorta, acting co-executive director of the Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Services System (MIEMSS), does not support changing the standard. He says not everyone knows where a trauma center is located and EMS can perform certain life-saving procedures that may be crucial before transport. A spokeswoman with the Baltimore Police Department said they do not have a position on the study’s findings and that “preservation of life is paramount." She added that a victim's decision to leave a crime scene "has little if any bearing on the outcome of the investigation. Thanks to video surveillance, CCTV cameras and our crime scene technicians it all seems to work out in the end.” For more information on the study, click here. 3283

If success at the box office equated into Academy Award success, you would expect "Star Wars," "Wonder Woman" and "Beauty and the Beast" to do well during Sunday's Oscars. While these movies, which represented the top three movies for domestic gross at the box office in 2017, were nominated for a combined six Academy Awards, a number of movies that didn't do so well at the Box Office received more nominations. As a matter of fact, if you combined the domestic box office totals of the nine films nominated for Best Picture, the total would still be lower than "Star Wars, The Last Jedi.""The Shape of Water" came in at No. 50 at the box office in 2017 according to Box Office Mojo. "The Shape of Water" led all movies in 2017 with 13 Academy Award nominations. "The Shape of Water" grossed million and is up for top awards such as Best Picture, Best Director (Guillermo del Toro) and Best Actress (Sally Hawkins)."Dunkirk" was second behind "The Shape of Water" for Academy Award nominations with eight, including nods for Best Picture, Best Director (Christopher Nolan) and Best Score. "Dunkirk" topped all nine films nominated for Best Picture, grossing 8 million in the US, ranking No. 14. "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri" is up for seven nominations on Sunday. The film, which is also up for Best Picture, grossed just 2,168 in its opening weekend, according to Box Office Mojo. "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri" has since made some cash, grossing million, which made it No. 55 domestically in 2017. "Phantom Thread," which has six nominations including Best Picture, had an even more humble box office journey. It grossed 6,495 in its opening weekend, before taking in million overall. The film did not crack the top 100 domestically. "Darkest Hour" also had six nominations and is up for Best Picture, and only grossed 5,000 its opening weekend. It has since grossed million in the United States. Among movies that topped the Box Office, "Star Wars, The Last Jedi" received four Academy Award nominations. The picture was the top grossing domestic film in 2017, making 8 million. The second-best grossing film of 2017 in the United States, "Beauty and the Beast," was nominated twice. The only other film with a nomination among those in the Top 10 at the box office was "Guardian of the Galaxy." "Guardian of the Galaxy," which was the fourth-highest domestic grossing film, received a nomination for Best Visual Effects.  2548

If you've been looking for a new kitchen appliance this year, locating certain models can be as tough as finding a new Xbox Series X or PlayStation 5.The appliance shortage that began in March shows no sign of letting up.Tommy Conougher is among the many frustrated shoppers. He needs more space in his refrigerator."This is one we've had since we built the house 17 years ago," he said.Like many families during this pandemic, he wants to stock up on frozen beef and chicken."We thought we would just invest in a freezer we would put in the garage, so we started to look."But finding a freezer was tougher than finding Nemo."We have been searching all summer long, nine months, for a freezer," Conougher told us in a Zoom interview from his kitchen."And even when the big box stores have their specials, they don't have them in stock."Many brands, price ranges affectedIt doesn't matter if you are looking for a freezer, refrigerator, range, oven, or washing machine. It also doesn't matter if your budget is 0 or ,000, or what brand you want (though American brands like Whirlpool and Maytag appear to be in better shape than European or Korean brands). You are going to find spot shortages just about everywhere, according to Ken Reiman, co-owner of an appliance distributor. He supplies builders and remodelers, who he says now have to delay finishing some projects due to ongoing shortages."When I check our vendor websites," he said, "they are just not available."He says the shortages that started when factories shut down for two months early in 2020 have not let up."For instance," Reiman explained, "they will give an estimated time of December 5, and December 6 comes around and they have moved to January."Why the shortage hasn't endedReiman says there are 3 reasons for the current shortages.Originally, it was factory shutdowns in March, April and May, along with delays getting appliances shipped from China during that time. The second reason is shortages of foreign-made parts, such as wiring harnesses and compressors, which forces U.S. factories to shut down their assembly lines until product arrives. The third reason is high demand, as people spend their vacation dollars this year on their kitchens instead, Reiman said. His suggestion: Be flexible on brand and model."We have products coming in," he said. "Our warehouses are more stuffed now than ever. But it seems we can't get the full package of matching appliances, which means you may get a range and microwave, but may have to wait three months for the matching fridge."If your heart is set on an exact size, color, and model, he says you could wait till spring.Reiman says your best bet is to ask what models are in the local or regional warehouse that you could get in a few days. While you will find shortages of all appliances, the worst of all are standalone freezers, because not many of them are made.As always, don't waste your money.________________________________Don't Waste Your Money" is a registered trademark of Scripps Media, Inc.
