MONTPELIER, Vt. -- Near a community garden, Natasha Duarte is in her element: compost.“I see organics as a resource more than a waste. There's a lot of nutrients in it, there's a lot of value in it,” said Duarte, who is with the Composting Association of Vermont.Now, in Vermont, it’s now part of a universal recycling law, which passed in 2012 and has been brought online in phases. As a last step, it addresses what to do with food waste.“July 1, Vermont took the step of banning disposal of food scraps from the trash,” said Josh Kelly with the Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation.That means everyone in the state -- from businesses to residents – must now keep their food waste out of the garbage.Across the country, about 40% of all the food Americans buy ends up in the trash. That food waste costs the average family of four about ,500 a year. It also takes up valuable space in landfills. Vermont now becomes the first state in the country where a food waste law applies to everyone.“We have a lot of different options for residents and businesses to manage their food waste,” Kelly said. “We have composting facilities across the state. We have a growing number of food scrap haulers and we have drop off locations for folks around the state.”One of those drop-off locations is at Green Mountain Compost.“We've actually been composting food waste for almost three decades,” said Dan Goossen of Chittenden Solid Waste District.The large-scale facility accepts residents dropping off their food scraps, as well as food waste from larger venues, like university cafeterias or apartment complexes.All those food scraps come together with yard waste and produce a finished product for use in gardening.“With a little bit of biology and a little bit of time and oxygen, it turns into a really amazing black compost finished product,” Goossen said.Natasha Duarte said that completes what’s known as “The Food Circle” and also allows people to see how much food they waste.“Just seeing the volume of it separated out from the rest of their trash or recycling, raises that awareness,” she said.It is an awareness that what used to be trash can eventually yield a community garden of treasures. 2216

More than 10,000 pounds of chicken is being recalled due to possible contamination by "foreign materials," specifically metal.  Empire Kosher Poultry Inc. says the raw chicken breasts were packaged on November 2 and have the number "P-1015" in the USDA inspection mark. Motorcycle land speed record holder Valerie Thompson survived a 343-mph crash while attempting to break the overall two-wheel record in Australia on Monday, according to Fox News.According to the report, the 49-year-old Thompson was going for the record at the Lake Gairdner World Speed Trials "when something went wrong during her run and the bike fell onto its side, digging a deep trench into the salt flats and spreading wreckage over a mile."Thompson's "Bub 7" motorcycle reportedly lifted off the ground, with its parachutes eventually allowing it to come to a complete stop. Thompson told Fox News that she's "doing OK" and is headed back to Scottsdale to determine what went wrong.Thompson earned the title of world's fastest female motorcycle racer when she topped out at 304.263 mph at the Bonneville Motorcycle Speed Trials in 2016. Known as "America's Queen of Speed," Thompson has won a number of racing awards and was featured in the 2013 documentary "Why We Ride." MIRAMAR, Calif. (KGTV) - The day after Christmas, a Miramar cidery owner woke up to learn a "grinch" broke in, stole items, and broke his handmade furniture.Owner of Serpentine Cider Sean Harris got the text while he was visiting his parents, out of town, for the holidays.He looked back at his security camera footage and around 10:45 p.m. Christmas night, a man in a backward baseball cap, black mask, and leather jacket moved furniture to get to a heat lamp and rolled it away.RELATED: SDPD investigating multiple brewery break-ins"Finally we're ready to close the doors on 2020 and hope for 2021 that is at least slightly better and then before the chapter closes we're able to throw this terrible, mutated, disgusting cherry on top," he said.The attack on his business cutting deeper during a year it's been hard to just survive, beaten down by constantly changing restrictions that have closed down his business multiple times.Now he has to replace stolen heat lamps and a canopy, "they cut our locks that chain everything together, they broke some of the furniture which is homemade by my father and I. They just stomped the furniture and broke it."That furniture holding deep meaning and a bond Harris and his father built during months of sweat and laughter, poured into the hand made pieces."The problem is is that he's in his 70s now and he's not going to be able to come down during COVID and build more of the stuff with me," he said. MOSIDA, Utah – Not too far south of Salt Lake City, you will find the Bateman Dairy Farm. It’s a farm where the cattle have quite the view. The Wasatch Mountain Range rises up across Utah Lake.“The right way to take care of cows is to make them happy and comfortable,” said Brad Bateman.Bateman has worked the farm since he was a small boy alongside his family.“There was no hanging out or having fun here; it was all work,” he said with a chuckle. “Our family developed the farm ground and broke a lot of this ground out of sagebrush.”Today, there are more than 20,000 head of dairy cows and feeding them can be a tall order.However, sometimes life can present a unique opportunity for growth.“We want to welcome you to the first-ever controlled environment indoor farm for animal feed,” said Steve Lindsley, president of Grov Technologies.Call it a marriage between farming and technology, with an eco-friendlier “hoof print.”“We call the machine, Olympus, Lindsley said, pointing to the large tower stretching nearly to the roof of the building.“Each of these machines will replace 35 to 50 acres of land.”Lindsley said to grow the cow feed indoors with Olympus only takes five percent of the water of traditional farming.“The seeds are planted on a tray, and within about five to six days, we come out with a beautiful harvest,” Lindsley said.Lindsley’s background is in tech but he envisions towers like Olympus helping anywhere rainwater is scarce.“There are so many challenges with water,” Lindsley explained. “You just think about the West, you think about California, the panhandle of Texas. There are so many places that could benefit from this technology.”For the Bateman farm, this year the weather wasn’t so much of an issue, it was COVID-19. The virus disrupted supply lines all over the world and put farms like the Batemans in danger of running out of feed.“We just couldn’t get into places to get the animal feed,” Bateman explained. “Places like Washington state, they wouldn’t even let our trucks in.”Bateman said the timing of the partnership couldn’t have been better.“The cows love this stuff,” he said with a smile. “This is like cow candy for them.”Now, Bateman sleeps a bit better at night knowing his cows will get fed regardless of the weather or a worldwide pandemic.“This whole thing has really brought home the importance of having a fresh, local supply of feed,” Bateman said. “This is a really big thing for us and feeling secure about our future.” 2488
