BILOXI, Miss. – In the lobby of one Mississippi hotel, people aren’t the only ones checking in and out – so are the dogs. “They see that cage. They're like, ‘What is it?’” said the hotel’s director of sales, Teresa Johnston. The gazebo-like kennel is the temporary home for Basil, a 6-month-old terrier mix up for adoption from a local shelter and ready for checkout in the hotel’s lobby. “The guest just gives us their room number and the sweet little puppy goes up,” Johnston said. If the guest wants to adopt them, the dog goes home with them upon checkout. It’s part of a partnership between this Home2 Suites hotel near Biloxi, and the Humane Society of South Mississippi. The idea is Johnston’s brainchild. “It's that simple,” she said. “And they've given us the ability to adopt right from the property.” The hotel hosts one shelter dog at a time; all are already spayed and neutered. It’s an out-of-the box effort to try to bring down overcrowding at the local animal shelter. “We have to go out into our community and get a little bit more involved in ways that people wouldn't really associate an animal shelter with,” said Bianca Janik, with the Humane Society of South Mississippi. “And so that's a big part of why this program is so successful, is because they don't expect to see a shelter dog.” Since the program began late last year, more than 30 dogs have been adopted at the hotel by people who fell for those puppy dog eyes. A man threw fireworks at NYPD officers in Flatbush, police said Tuesday. The man tossed multiple fireworks toward officers and an NYPD vehicle on Ocean Avenue on June 14, officials said. No one was injured. The fireworks throwing comes amid a surge of complaints connected to fireworks in the city. There were 1,737 complaints about them recorded with 311 in the first half of June. On Thursday, the United States Air Force Academy announced that President Trump nominated Lt. General Richard M. Clark to become the Academy's first Black superintendent. According to the U.S. Air Force Academy, if the Senate confirms Lt. Gen. Clark's nomination, he will become the second Black general to head up a service academy. "I just know they killed my son and they shouldn't have," said William Lewis, Jr. about the 18-year-old gas station clerk who fatally shot his son Monday night. It happened at the 76 gas station on Detroit's east side. Detroit police said when the clerk saw Joshua Lewis, 30, allegedly stealing from a coin machine, he picked up an AK-47 and fired a single shot through the safety glass. Lewis was killed by the round that pierced through the safety glass. "A quarter machine. My son got killed over a quarter machine," Lewis said. The gas station clerk, who is the owner's brother, was arrested. Prosecutors are reviewing a warrant request in the case. Family members and others dispute the allegation that Joshua was stealing from the machine. They said he was playing a video game that malfunctioned and he was shaking the machine in an attempt to get his money back. "Whatever he did, he didn't deserve to die," said Emily Rippy, Joshua's mother.
