President Donald Trump used the United Nations as a foil on the campaign trail in 2016, slamming it for its "utter weakness and incompetence" and arguing that it is "not a friend of freedom."His history with the international body on Manhattan's East Side doesn't start there -- as a real estate creature of New York, Trump has long interacted with the UN.On his first day attending the UN's yearly meeting, Trump tried to play nice. But it's clear that his skepticism for the organization remains. 506

Republican Sen. John McCain, who is battling brain cancer in his home state of Arizona, says in his new book that his current term is his last and, as a result, he feels he can open up about how he sees the current political climate."This is my last term. If I hadn't admitted that to myself before this summer, a stage 4 cancer diagnosis acts as ungentle persuasion," he wrote in his book, "The Restless Wave," according to the excerpt published on Apple News on Monday. "I'm freer than colleagues who will face the voters again. I can speak my mind without fearing the consequences much. And I can vote my conscience without worry."Referring to President Donald Trump, McCain wrote, "He has declined to distinguish the actions of our government from the crimes of despotic ones. The appearance of toughness, or a reality show facsimile of toughness, seems to matter more than any of our values."McCain said he wants to see the nation's politics "return to the purposes and practices that distinguish our history" and says, "you're damn right, I'm a champion of compromise.""I would like to see us recover our sense that we are more alike than different," he wrote. "We are citizens of a republic made of shared ideals forged in a new world to replace the tribal enmities that tormented the old one. Even in times of political turmoil such as these, we share that awesome heritage and the responsibility to embrace it."McCain, 81, made public last summer his brain cancer diagnosis. He's been recovering from side effects of the cancer treatment at his home in Arizona since late last year."'The world is a fine place and worth the fighting for and I hate very much to leave it,' spoke my hero, Robert Jordan, in For Whom the Bell Tolls," McCain wrote in his book. "And I do, too. I hate to leave it. But I don't have a complaint. Not one. It's been quite a ride. I've known great passions, seen amazing wonders, fought in a war, and helped make a peace. I made a small place for myself in the story of America and the history of my times."Cindy McCain, the senator's wife, tweeted Monday that former Vice President Joe Biden visited the family."Enjoyed a wonderful visit from @JoeBiden yesterday. Such good family friends. Enjoyed catching up!" she tweeted. 2277

Ray Chavez, the nation's oldest survivor of the attack on Pearl Harbor, has died, the White House says. He was 106.The veteran passed away peacefully in his sleep Wednesday, CNN affiliate KFMB reported, citing a family statement.Chavez was a quartermaster stationed in Pearl Harbor at the time of the Japanese attack on Hawaii that launched America's entry into World War II in 1941.He lived in Poway, California, with his family but gained prominence in recent years as he traveled around the country, attending memorial services and commemorations. Earlier this year, he met with President Donald Trump in the Oval Office ahead of Memorial Day."Ray was honored to have served his country and to fight among heroes and loved meeting his fellow comrades," his family said in a statement. "He cherished his time going to talk to the kids at schools because he doesn't want them to forget Pearl Harbor."As his health declined in recent months, he wished to be buried at the Miramar National Cemetery, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported. 1044

Restaurants in Los Angeles County will be open for delivery, take-out and drive-thru services only for three weeks beginning Wednesday in the hopes of preventing the spread of COVID-19, according to The Los Angeles Times and KABC-TV.Restaurants, bar, breweries and wineries in LA County had been open with outdoor seating only. However, officials have moved to restrict all in-person dining as cases in the county have spiked in recent weeks — just as they have across the country.Breweries and wineries can continue selling alcohol in a retail setting."To reduce the possibility for crowding and the potential for exposures in settings where people are not wearing their face coverings, restaurants, breweries, wineries and bars will only be able to offer take-out, drive thru, and delivery services," the county's Department of Public Health said in a news release. "Wineries and breweries may continue their retail operations adhering to current protocols. In person dining will not be allowed, at minimum, for the next 3 weeks."The restrictions came after county officials warned that further action would be taken if the county's five-day average of daily cases rose above 4,000 a day. KABC-TV reports that on Sunday, the four-day average sat at 4,097 a day.The restrictions threaten countless restaurant owners in the Los Angeles area, as well as the thousands of people those owners employ. Several restaurant owners told The Los Angeles Times that the restrictions come just as they were expecting a boost in business for the holidays. Some business owners say they are still paying off renovations implemented to expand outdoor dining. In the last week, California has reported about 11,000 new cases of COVID-19 each day — a record since the pandemic began. 1774
