SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer announced Wednesday that a record number of potholes have been filled in the city in 2019.An average year sees 32,000 potholes filled, but Wednesday crews filled pothole number 49,000. This year the city tripled the number of pothole repair teams and extended their hours to include nights and weekends. Matt Sinclaire lives on Georgia Street in University Heights, however, and showed 10News a doorknob flier that was left at homes on his block last week announcing that street would be repaved this week. Curiously, the no parking signs were pulled Friday, he says, and the job, he was told, was canceled. Wednesday, that announcement from the mayor was held, and two potholes were repaired directly in front of Sinclaire's home. "This whole thing pissed me off," says Sinclaire. "We waited this long and finally we were going to see our street paved... but we have a nice shiny little black square that's going to probably be good for the next year." Deputy City of San Diego Chief Operating Officer Johnnie Perkins told 10News the project was postponed, not canceled, due to the subcontractor's staffing issues. There was a miscommunication and the contractor gave neighbors bad information about a cancellation, Perkins said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego County is now able to test for novel coronavirus without needing to send samples to the CDC, the Health and Human Services Agency announced Thursday. The County Public Health Lab can now run up to 40 tests at once. The lab is one of dozens certified by the CDC throughout the U.S. “This is great news for San Diego County and will help with our ongoing efforts to contain COVID-19,” said Wilma Wooten, M.D., M.P.H., County public health officer. “Being able to test locally means that when we have patients under investigation, we can more rapidly remove unneeded restrictions from those without infection. Results for potential cases of COVID-19 will now be available within 24 to 48 hours, health officials say. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – San Diego County is working to make it easier for San Diegans to get flu shots, which health officials say is especially important this year because of the coronavirus pandemic.On Thursday, local leaders kicked off efforts to promote flu vaccinations. Over the course of the next few weeks, they will be hosting pop-up clinics across the county where people can get free flu shots.The pop-up clinics are designed for those who don’t have insurance or those who can’t get the vaccine from their health care provider or pharmacy.Valentina Christiansen came to one of the clinics to get flu shots for her family. She said, “I think it’s great because I tried to go through our health plan and that’s over a month out, and we wanted to get it sooner. We heard about the opportunity and we’re excited to be able to do that.”Dr. Denise Foster, chief nursing officer for the county, said getting the flu vaccine can also help in the battle against the coronavirus. Keeping flu patients out of the hospital frees up beds and resources for those fighting COVID-19.“The flu vaccine can prevent the flu and prevent people from seeking health care services that might be needed right now connected to the pandemic,” Foster said.Foster added there are more people that have gotten the flu vaccine this year in comparison to this same time last year. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer has identified a park-and-ride lot in Scripps Ranch as a perfect place for new affordable housing, but neighboring businesses worry the plan will drive away their customers."You solve one problem and create ten new ones. There’s seven businesses that are going to suffer," said Yannis Pihas, owner of Yanni's Bar & Grill.Pihas says his customers, as well as visitors to the two hotels in the center, frequently use the park-and-ride because there is limited parking otherwise. While he's attempted to speak with city leaders about his concerns, so far he says he has not been given any indication that the housing project will include parking that the businesses can use.ABC 10News reached out to the city. A spokesperson says the project is still in the early process of planning and that details on potential parking have yet to be worked out. The spokesperson also said the public can always bring concerns to the area's planning board and that there will be more opportunities for public input once the plan is prepared.In a statement, Mayor Faulconer said, "There is a great need in our community for housing that gives folks a real chance to have a place of their own, but also the support system they need to stay housed. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Police officers were forced to abandon a pursuit Tuesday after learning a child was in the suspect's vehicle.The pursuit began after the suspect rear-ended an SDPD vehicle along 17th Street downtown around 1 p.m., according to police. The officer in the vehicle hit was fine.Police pursued the driver but terminated the pursuit after learning a child was in the car.SDPD ran the suspect's plates and found the vehicle was also stolen. During the pursuit, the suspect's vehicle collided with at least one other vehicle - losing the front right tire.No injuries were reported.The vehicle was abandoned in the 1300 block of Angelus Ave. in Lemon Grove. Police have yet to locate the suspect.The owner of the vehicle told 10News the car was stolen from Lakeside two days ago. He said he and his 12-year-old son worked on the vehicle as a project together. 943
