BEIJING, Sept. 12 (Xinhua) -- Chinese State Councilor Dai Bingguo told Japan early Sunday morning to make a "wise political resolution" and immediately release the Chinese fishermen and fishing boat its coast guard seized earlier this week.Dai made the remarks when he summoned the Japanese Ambassador to China Uichiro Niwa in the wee hours. He was the highest-ranking Chinese official to make a response after the fishing boat and its crew were seized Tuesday in waters off the Diaoyu Islands and its captain was detained on Friday."Dai expressed solemnly (to the Japanese ambassador) the Chinese government's grave concerns and its serious and just position," said the Foreign Ministry in a statement.Dai warned Japan not to make a wrong judgement on the situation and urged it to make a "wise political resolution" and immediately release the fishermen and return the boat. The Japanese ambassador expressed that he would promptly report the Chinese position to his government, according to the statement.China decided Friday night to postpone a negotiation with Japan on the East China Sea issue, which had been scheduled for mid September, after a Japanese court ruled a 10-day detention through Sept.19 against the captain despite protests from China.Previously, Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi on Friday summoned the Japanese ambassador and demanded Japan immediately and unconditionally release the boat and all the crew, saying China's determination to defend its sovereignty over the Diaoyu Islands and the interests of the Chinese people was unswerving.Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu said Friday night when announcing the postponement of the talks that the Japanese side has "ignored China's repeated solemn representations and firm opposition, and obstinately decided to put the Chinese captain under the so-called judiciary procedures."She said Japan's acts have violated the law of nations and basic international common sense, and are "ridiculous, illegal and invalid.""Japan will reap as it has sown, if it continues to act recklessly," Jiang warned. On Tuesday, two Japanese Coast Guard patrol ships and the Chinese fishing boat collided in waters off the Diaoyu Islands in the East China Sea. No injuries were reported, but the fishing boat was then intercepted by the Japanese patrol.
WASHINGTON, Oct. 6 (Xinhua) -- China's growth is projected to average 10.5 percent in 2010 and 9.6 percent in 2011, driven by domestic demand, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) said in a report Wednesday. The Washington-based international lending agency made the projection for the annual fall meetings this weekend of the 187-nation IMF and its sister lending organization, the World Bank."The slight moderation in recent activity is expected to continue through 2011 in light of tighter quantitative limits on credit growth, measures to cool off the property market and limit bank exposure to this, and the planned unwinding of fiscal stimulus in 2011," the IMF said in its report. The report said this year's sustained growth in retail sales and industrial production confirms that private sector activity has advanced beyond the lift from government stimulus."On average over 2010-11, private domestic demand is poised to contribute two-thirds of near term growth, and government activity about one third, whereas the contribution from net exports will be close to zero," the report said.Despite the robustness in domestic demand, the pickup in inflation in 2010 reflected mainly higher food prices rather than core inflation, the report said. The report said China's increasingly wide trading network is driving growth in numerous economies, especially commodity exporters. The report said Asia's medium-term growth depends on the rebalancing of drivers of growth -- greater reliance should be put on domestic markets instead of foreign demand. The report said such a rebalancing in China, the world's second largest economy, is critical to enhance the role of household consumption in domestic growth. The report also recommended that China implement reforms to health care, education, and pension systems to enhance the social safety net.
TIANJIN, Oct. 23 (Xinhua) -- China has become Volvo's third largest market, with more of its car models to go on sale in the world's largest auto market this year, Chief Executive Office (CEO) of Volvo Cars China said in Tianjin.Dr. Alexander Klose, CEO of Volvo Cars China, told Xinhua at the Ninth Tianjin International Automobile Trade Show, being held from Friday to Wednesday.Klose said Volvo Cars had entered a new era of fast development, adding that its sales in China roared in 2010.As of the end of September, Volvo's global sales volume was up 12.5 percent year on year, compared with 52 percent year-on-year rise in China, he said.Volvo also aggressively expanded its dealer network to 98 outlets in 81 Chinese cities this year. Two new Volvo sales centers opened in Beijing within merely one week in early October, about two months after east China's Zhejiang Geely Holding Group Co. acquired the Swedish brand from the U.S. auto giant Ford for 1.5 billion U.S. dollars in early August.Dr. Klose said he was confident of seeing tremendous growth in China's auto market in the next five years."As the Chinese government has increased the tax rate for large displacement cars already, we now have a lot of cars below three liters, and I think we'll stick to that strategy, as you can see now the XC60 which was introduced today is just two liters," he said."As the technology advances, we'll probably even see 1.6 liter engines or 1.5 liter engines in the future," he added.Volvo Cars is not the only automaker hoping to take advantage of China's rapidly growing auto market.Bentley, the famous British luxury carmaker, will open a new sales center in China at Tianjin next Thursday, which is the 11th one in China, according to a press release by Shanghai-based Zenith Integrated Communications Corp. (Zenith) Saturday at the auto show.Zenith is the public relations agent of Bentley in China. The automaker has sold 421 limousines to China in 2009, and the goal for 2010 is 777, the release said.
