SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Kaiser Permamente employees in San Diego voted to join a nationwide strike against the healthcare giant starting Oct. 14. More than 4,000 members of OPEIU Local 30 supported the action, a union spokesperson said. Workers say they want to “protect middle-class jobs with wages and benefits that can support families.” Hundreds of positions would be affected, including x-ray, pharmacy, and surgical technicians, phlebotomists, optometrists, and housekeepers. “We believe the only way to ensure our patients get the best care is to take this step,” said Robert Sparrow, an x-ray technician. “Our goal is to get Kaiser to stop committing unfair labor practices and get back on track as the best place to work and get care. There is no reason for Kaiser to let a strike happen when it has the resources to invest in patients, communities and workers.” Picket lines will be established at Kaiser Permanente hospitals, medical office buildings, and other facilities in six states and Washington, D.C. Kaiser Permanente Chairman and CEO Bernard J. Tyson issued a statement which reads: “While the Kaiser Permanente management team was actively engaged in negotiations at the bargaining table, SEIU-UHW released a strike announcement on 9/16 – an overt effort to gain leverage in bargaining. “This has been an ongoing pattern during this entire process with SEIU-UHW, as they believe that an aggressive approach such as using negative corporate campaigning and threats of strike is the way to get a better offer than what our other unions have received. “We are in this situation because of the aggressive approach of SEIU-UHW leadership, but our approach remains the same: we are committed to offering a package that’s aligned with all of our other unions that keeps our employees among the best paid in wages and benefits in the industry. We are committed to our workforce who delivers on our mission every day and to our members’ demand for greater affordability of care and coverage from Kaiser Permanente. “I hope we will not have a strike on October 14, and we are preparing to deal with all scenarios to make sure our members are cared for.” 2172

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Just days after San Diego County ordered a shutdown of indoor dining and San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer signed an executive order that makes it easier for restaurants to move seating outdoors, many restaurants are already opening up business outside.Johan Engman is the owner of Rise and Shine Hospitality, which has 18 restaurant locations under the umbrella. Ten of those are Breakfast Republic. He said about half of the 18 locations have expanded to include either sidewalk, parking lot, or shared courtyard space for tables.“Let’s not waste our time complaining or feeling sorry for ourselves. Let’s figure out what do we need to do to give us the best odds to survive this and let’s just do it,” said Engman. For the Pacific Beach Breakfast Republic location, he said there were about 170 seats prior to coronavirus. Once there were social distancing limits, he could seat about 80. With the new ban on indoor seating, that left only about 30 seats on his patio, so the addition of parking lot space will bump seating back up to about 80 people. He said financially, they’re taking a hit, but he made the decision to stay open to help his employees.“Not only seeing how financially detrimental that is, but the morale. So you lay off all your managers then you hire them back. Imagine them literally a couple weeks later you send that message again,” he said.Similarly, La Puerta is seeing the roller coaster of numbers. Owner Merritte Powell said the Gaslamp restaurant is also expanding onto the sidewalk. He said customers will notice a difference, but hopes something is better than nothing.“You’re sitting next to a building, next to a doorway, you’re also going to be a couple feet from a parked car,” he said, referring to the new setup. He said he’s hoping to add plants and lights eventually to make it more aesthetically pleasing and could see a permanent future for sidewalk dining like this if it is successful. He said this could be beneficial in areas like the Gaslamp that lack a lively presence that the outdoor dining will likely bring. Both business owners said the Department of Alcohol Beverage Control has been working quickly and efficiently to help get them the liquor permits they need for the parking lot. They also both are hoping the city votes to allow parklets next week, which they say will further expand seating and appeal. 2386

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - In preparation for one of the most advanced fighter jets in the world, Marine Corps Air Station Miramar is planning security upgrades to its airfield perimeter fence.10News discovered it’s one of nine large-scale construction projects that Miramar will be doing over the next decade."These construction projects here are what enables, that is what brings our national defense policy and strategy to reality," said Public Works Officer Lt. Commander Travis Brinkman.Currently being built in the heart of MCAS Miramar is a 160,000 square foot hangar is designed to hold up to 12 F-35s.It's the first of three hangars planned for the location."The need to provide modern facilities as well as the F-35 has specific requirements, specific systems that need different maintenance, different capabilities within the facility itself to provide that maintenance,” said Brinkman. According to a post on the Federal Business Opportunities website, MCAS Miramar is also looking to replace more than 24,000 feet of existing chain link fence, vehicle gates, and swing arm barriers.According to the site, “The project magnitude is ,000,000 to ,000,000.”"We're upgrading the fence line around the airfield itself, and it’s simply to ensure that our fence line is complying with the security requirements for the F-35,” said Brinkman. "This brings Miramar, puts it on the forefront of national defense and national defense strategy,” said MCAS Miramar Director of Communications Capt. Matthew Gregory.According to officials, the Marine Corps will eventually transition its entire tactical air fleet to F-35 to include three legacy platforms: the AV-8B Harrier, the F/A-18 Hornet, and the EA-6B Prowler. They tell us the aircraft combines next-generation fighter characteristics of radar-evading stealth, supersonic speed, fighter agility, and advanced logistical support. It also has a different sound, one anyone nearby will notice."Once they get out here to California, most notable to the community, one you're going to see a different plane flying but two its going to sound a little different,” said Gregory. “It's not necessarily louder than the F-18’s, but it's got a different pitch because it's got a different engine on it.”The price tag for all the projects scheduled in the next decade is around half a billion dollars.Military officials believe it will save money in the long run and offer a longer lifespan. The hangar should be ready to receive the new aircraft around January 2020. 2510

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Looking around Barrio Logan, you can't miss the shopping carts, tents and camps belonging to the homeless. Residents of the San Diego neighborhood say the city is turning their community into a "homeless ghetto" - and it's time for it to stop. Tuesday night a group gathered outside the Our Lady of Guadalupe Church, calling on the city to provide "fair distribution of homeless services across San Diego.""It's unbelievable what the mayor and the City Council are doing to this area," said Father John Auther. The priest pointed to a map, asking why a nearly 370 square mile city is putting most of the homeless services in a one-quarter square mile. Father Auther says the concentration of services goes beyond the residents of Barrio Logan. It's bad for the homeless community, too. The area was hit hard by the hepatitis A outbreak.RELATED: Health officials reminding San Diegans about hepatitis A shot "Many of the homeless as we know suffer from addiction problems, alcoholism, mental illness, and what the city has decided to do is put all of them together," Father Auther said. "How will anyone get well?"Right now, city crews are working on a transitional homeless facility in the neighborhood. The facility is going up just 15 feet away from a school playground. A playground closed because of the homeless issue. "We can no longer feel comfortable, feel safe with our students down here on this playground," said Noel Bishop, principal of Our Lady's School San Diego.10News asked a few people in the homeless community two questions: 1. Will the new facility help you? All said yes. 1651
