GENEVA (AP) — The European Union’s Earth observation program says the ozone hole over Antarctica has swelled to its largest size and deepest level in years.Experts at the Copernicus Atmospheric Monitoring Service say a strong, stable and cold polar vortex has driven the expansion, and have called for greater international efforts to ensure countries abide by an international accord to phase out use of ozone-depleting chemicals.Vincent-Henri Peuch, who heads the service, said in a statement that the ozone hole was “definitely” among the largest in the last 15 years.“With the sunlight returning to the South Pole in the last weeks, we saw continued ozone depletion over the area,” Peuch said. “After the unusually small and short-lived ozone hole in 2019, which was driven by special meteorological conditions, we are registering a rather large one again this year, which confirms that we need to continue enforcing the Montreal Protocol banning emissions of ozone depleting chemicals.”Since the ban on halocarbons, officials say the ozone layer has slowly been recovering and data shows a trend in decreasing area of the ozone hole.Ozone depletion over the Antarctic continent was first noticed in 1985. 1217

Grocery chain Kroger is reportedly considering banning all Visa card transactions at its locations throughout the United States due to a dispute on swipe fees, Bloomberg reported. Kroger is reportedly taking the first step toward stopping Visa transactions. At its Foods Co. Supermarkets, which are located in California, the chain will stop accepting Visa transactions next month, Bloomberg reported. “It’s pretty clear we need to move down this path, and if we have to expand that beyond Foods Co., we’re prepared to take that step,” Kroger spokesperson Chris Hjelm told Bloomberg. "When the amount retailers pay in card fees gets out of alignment, as we believe it is now, we don’t believe we have a choice but to use whatever mechanism possible to get it back in alignment.”While Kroger itself has grocery stores in 21 states, Kroger owns a number of regional chains throughout the country — Baker’s, City Market, Dillons, Food 4 Less, Fred Meyer, Fry’s, Gerbes, King Soopers, Jay C, Food Store, Owens Market, Pay-Less Super Markets, QFC, Ralphs and Smith’s Food and DrugVisa issued a response to Kroger's announcement. "Visa is disappointed at Kroger’s decision to stop accepting Visa credit cards at its Foods Co. stores. HONOLULU (AP) — The small, tight-knit community of about 72,000 people on Hawaii's rural island of Kauai spent the first seven months of the pandemic mostly sheltered from the viral storm. Then in October, statewide travel restrictions eased and the virus came pouring in. The island had only 61 known cases of coronavirus from March through September but went from no active cases in October to at least 84 new infections in just seven weeks. Health officials traced most cases to returning residents and tourists. Hawaii continues to enjoy relatively low hospitalization and death rates. But Kauai last month had its first COVID-19 death and island officials now want mandatory secondary testing for returning residents and tourists. 743

GASLAMP QUARTER (KGTV) - A benefit was held Sunday night for a local woman injured in a parasailing accident in Mexico. On June 9th, Katie Malone was in Puerto Vallarta to celebrate her 29th birthday when tragedy struck. According to a local newspaper, Malone was parasailing when the rope tethered to a boat somehow broke and left her flying through the air.Malone crash-landed at an airport and suffered a fractured skull, fractured pelvis, broken ribs, a collapsed lung and other injuries. Donations helped pay for her treatment and life flight from Mexico back to San Diego. She spent about a month in the hospital. For the past few months, Malone has been in physical therapy and working to get stronger everyday. She says she is a year ahead of schedule."When it first happened, I just wanted to move forward and not dwell on things," Malone said. "I would do physical therapy and in between physical therapy I would do homework they gave me to do."  Malone is extremely thankful to family and friends who have been there for her and helped her move forward.Sunday night's benefit was held at "Tin Roof" in the Gaslamp Quarter. The benefit was to raise money for Malone's medical bills.Malone said she might go parasailing again, but not anytime soon. 1315
