SOLANA BEACH, Calif. (KGTV) -- Dozens of people gathered in front of a post office in Solan Beach Tuesday morning with signs in hand, pushing for the protection of the U.S. Postal Service.Tina Zucker, one of the organizers of the rally, said, “I just would like our country to have a postal service that works and to have a government with people who support it and don’t take it into our political realm.”As a succulent grower, Zucker has relied on the postal service for the last 15 years. She said there’s been a noticeable delay in delivery times. This comes as the U.S. Postal Service had announced the removal of hundreds of mail processing machines across the country and warned 46 states it may not be able to process all mail-in ballots in time to be counted for the election.“This has to get handled. You know, it’s America. This is the United States of America. We are bigger and better than the way things are going. And with the pandemic, we have to be able to vote with ballots. We need to be able to mail in our ballots with confidence,” Zucker said.At around the same time the rally was held in front of the location on South Sierra Avenue, the U.S. Postmaster General announced those changes won’t happen until after the election to reassure people that the postal service can handle mail in voting.Organizers said though there weren’t big crowds of people at this rally, they felt it was important to voice out their concerns and let the employees of the postal service know they support them.Susana Arnold, one of the organizers, added, “It’s really about if you see something that’s not right, you say something.” 1640

Signaling a new chapter in the battle over abortion access in the United States, a European organization has stepped into the fray, providing Americans a way to get doctor-prescribed pills by mail to medically induce abortions at home.Called Aid Access, the organization says it uses telemedicine, including online consultations, to facilitate services for healthy women who are less than nine weeks pregnant. If a woman completes the consultation and is deemed eligible for a medical abortion, the organization's founder writes a prescription for the two pills used to terminate the pregnancy, misoprostol and mifepristone. Prescriptions are then sent to a pharmacy in India, which fills and mails orders to the U.S.There are other ways to get abortion pills by mail in the U.S., but Aid Access is the most affordable option at and one that offers the possibility of financial help, as stated on its website. Plus, Aid Access is the only company to offer physician oversight, according to a report card issued by the grassroots group Plan C, which seeks to educate women about self-managed abortion. 1112

SEOUL, South Korea — North Korean state media say leader Kim Jong Un urged officials to maintain alertness against the coronavirus, warning that complacency risked “unimaginable and irretrievable crisis." Despite the warning, Kim reaffirmed North Korea’s claim to not have had a single case of COVID-19. The country described its anti-virus efforts as a matter of national existence earlier this year. The reports on Thursday's high-level ruling party meeting say Kim stressed the need for vigilance as the virus continues to spread in neighboring countries.Experts say North Korea's lockdown is hurting an economy already battered by U.S.-led sanctions over its nuclear weapons program. 695

Several videos showing white people calling the police on people of color for controversial reasons have gone viral this summer. Now, one lawmaker is fighting to make it illegal to report people simply based on race.It seems there’s a new viral incident, almost weekly. In April, a white Starbucks manager called police on two black males, who were waiting for their friend inside the Philadelphia store. The following month, a woman, dubbed BBQ Becky by the internet, called police on black men who were grilling in a park in Oakland, Calf. Then, there’s Permit Patty, who called to report a young black girl selling water without a permit on a San Francisco sidewalk.New York State Sen. Jesse Hamilton (D) proposed new legislation that would make calling police on law-abiding people of color a hate crime.  “We have to draw a line in the sand,” says Sen. Hamilton. “This is a phenomenon that's happening all throughout the country, where people are using the police as private security, to interrogate, to intimidate, to harass and humiliate.”Sen. Hamilton says it has even happened to him. He says a woman called police while he was campaigning in his own district, and all because she didn’t like his message.“I’m saying, no, that shouldn’t happen. No one should be interrogated or humiliated because of their color of their skin, political beliefs, sex orientation,” says Sen. Hamilton. “They should not be harassed like that.”The bill, if passed, would criminalize making police reports against people of color without evidence of malice. 1558

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Governor Ron DeSantis announced Florida will enter Phase 3 of reopening the state's economy.Effective immediately, Gov. DeSantis announced Friday in his press conference in St. Petersburg that restaurants and select businesses can operate at full capacity.Phase 3 of Gov. DeSantis' "SAFE. SMART. STEP-BY-STEP PLAN" ensures Floridians that restaurants can reopen at a minimum 50% capacity if the local government prohibits them from reopening at full capacity.“Everybody has an opportunity and the right to work. Every business has the right to operate,” said Gov. DeSantis said. With Phase 3, Gov. DeSantis said he will no longer place limitations on businesses due to coronavirus concerns."There will not be limitations from the state of Florida," Gov. DeSantis said. The Florida Restaurant and Lodging Association (FRLA) President and CEO Carol Dover said the pandemic has caused 336,000 people in the industry to lose their jobs.“The effects on the local and state economy have been significant. I want to thank Governor DeSantis and DBPR Secretary Halsey Beshears for their support as we have navigated this unprecedented time and for allowing us the opportunity to get back to work,” Dover said in a press release. The announcement comes just days after bars and breweries were allowed to reopen in Florida.Florida's top business regulator Halsey Beshears announced just 15 days ago that the state is rescinding Executive Order 20-09. The executive order, issued earlier in the summer, suspended bars from serving alcohol on their premises.Gov. DeSantis said if the local government wants to keep businesses from reopening at a minimum of 50% capacity, they must make their case to the state on why they want to place the restrictions and identify the costs involved.Gov. DeSantis also announced on Friday that he’s suspending all fines and penalties against people accused of not wearing masks.FRLA is expected to unveil Gov. DeSantis' executive order on rolling out Phase 3 sometime Friday night. This story was first reported by KJ Hiramoto at WFTS in Tampa, Florida. 2102
