SALT LAKE COUNTY, Utah – It’s been said that dogs are a man’s best friend. Jared Johnstun is lucky enough to have not one, but two furry sidekicks.“Yes, you’re good boys aren’t you?” Johnstun said to his two goldendoodles sitting beside him on the floor. “They’re a little tired today too.”Jared Johnston knows a thing or two about being worn out.“I’m a physician who works mainly in the intensive care unit,” Johnstun said. “I’m a pulmonary critical care doctor.”Since COVID hit, the doctor has been going non-stop.“You know, for 10 days or 12 days in a row, I’m in the hospital every day, some days I’m there for 12 hours,” Johnstun said.As a doctor, he’s seen it all but for him, the pandemic is different.“It was definitely a shock to me,” he said.About two months in, Dr. Johnstun, used to living alone, suddenly felt like something was wrong.“You know, I just realized that I wasn’t doing well,” he said. So, he made a move he never expected.“I’m a 40-year-old ICU doctor and I live with my parents,” he said with a chuckle.Johnstun now lives with his mom and dad near the hospital he works at.“I tried to do all this by myself initially and I just couldn’t do it,” Johnstun said. He’s not alone.“In medicine, there has been this long tradition of everything is fine and we got this,” said Dr. Amy Locke, the Chief Wellness Officer at the University of Utah Hospital.Doctors and nurses are facing challenges unlike many have ever seen in their career. That is why hospitals like the University of Utah are turning to wellness officers.“It’s kind of like counseling,” Locke said. “You know, checking in, making sure people are doing OK and that they’re able to access resources.”At the University of Utah’s resiliency center, their resources are being used more than ever.“Our interactions with people have more than doubled over the last six months,” Locke said.Doctors like Johnstun are applauding the efforts made by hospital groups throughout the country.“In general, the mental health of the physicians and nurses and all health care workers is something that really hasn’t been talked about.”He said talking to other health care workers on the COVID-19 front lines has been eye opening.“We’re talking about what is it going to look like in 10 years when you have a whole generation of doctors and nurses who have PTSD?” Johnstun said.As for Johnstun, he has found healing in being around family, practicing yoga, meditating and exercising.Even after all he has been through in the past eight months, he believes he’s exactly where he should be.“(Doctors) have found a calling and a purpose in fighting COVID and taking care of the people who have COVID,” he said. “I couldn’t imagine myself doing anything else. I wouldn’t want to do anything else.” 2766

SAN DIEGO (AP) — California health officials have warned that a severe flu season could overwhelm hospitals that also are dealing with COVID-19. California Secretary of Health and Human Services Dr. Mark Ghaly joined the heads of the state's hospital and medical associations to urge people to get flu vaccines now. Ghaly said while the state has seen progress in recent weeks with a drop in coronavirus cases, officials expect an uptick as the economy continues to open. That makes it critical for hospitals to keep bed space available. Officials said currently hospitals are treating 3,500 confirmed and suspected COVID-19 patients. About 30 percent are in intensive care units. 688

SAN DIEGO — Three teenagers were taken into custody in three separate attempts to smuggle fentanyl across the U.S.-Mexico border, according to federal officials.U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) said the incidents occurred on March 30 and 31 at the San Ysidro Port of Entry near San Diego, California. On Friday, CBP agents stopped a 17-year-old Mexican citizen. After noticing an "anomaly" on the teen's back, agents conducted a pat down and found two packages strapped to his back. The packages contained four pounds of fentanyl — a street value of 1,000.The next day, CBP agents stopped two more male teens within 10 minutes of each other: a 17-year-old and a 15-year-old. Both were found to have packages of fentanyl strapped to their backs. The two combined were carrying about nine pounds of drugs, a street value of more than 6,000.The teens in each case were arrested and turned over to Homeland Security Investigations. The all drugs were seized by CBP officers.According to Pete Flores, the director of Field Operations for Customs and Border Protection in San Diego, Fentanyl is 50 to 100 times more deadly than heroin."Please understand that no matter what you may be told, there are consequences for engaging in this type of activity, not to mention the dangers of working with transnational criminal organizations,” he said, 1383

SAN DIEGO (AP/KGTV) — Unlike most Californians, people in San Diego will be able to get a reprieve from the heat this Labor Day weekend by heading to movie theaters and dining inside a restaurant. Among California’s 10 most populous counties, San Diego is the only one with virus cases low enough to meet state standards for reopening theaters, museums and gyms, and resuming indoor dining — all with limited capacity to provide for physical distancing. San Diego County is listed in the state's second tier, or "substantial" tier, for cities reporting four to seven daily coronavirus cases per 100,000 residents and a positive test rate between 5% and 8%.As of Thursday, San Diego’s case rate is 5.8 and the testing positivity percentage is 3.8%. Since one of those metrics is in the second tier, the county isn't eligible to begin the 14-day countdown to qualify for the next tier of easing restrictions.Local officials say an aggressive reaction to outbreaks and a bipartisan approach have helped the county deal with the pandemic. While San Diego County has kept case rates low, the county reported two new outbreaks — in a business and in a restaurant/bar — on Thursday for a total of 17 community outbreaks in the last week.Officials warned this week that Labor Day weekend poses a threat to those gradually decreasing metrics and encouraged residents to be safe and avoid gatherings over the holiday weekend. 1422
