SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - An Escondido man has devoted his time during this pandemic to helping San Diego County’s homeless youth get back on the right track.Michael Shaw is the executive director of Southern California Youth Emergency Services (SoCalYES). He first spoke with ABC 10News in August while he was helping out a young man named Caleb, who found himself homeless on the streets of San Diego.“He reached out to people in our community online asking for help, he had his car stolen from him, and he had nowhere to go,” explained Shaw.SoCalYES quickly responded, and soon after, the young man had a roof over his head, a new car, and a job. He has since moved back to his home state to be with his family.“Caleb is doing great, he’s working full time, he has his vehicle still, he’s back with his family, he’s happy,” said Shaw. “When these young people need help, they need help right now. They don’t need help next week; they don’t need help in two weeks, they don’t need help when a bed becomes available. They need help now. Our big thing is immediate services,” he said.During this pandemic, Shaw and his team have been able to help more homeless youth across our county.After the ABC 10News story aired in August, Shaw said more people became aware of the services SoCalYES provides.“We had a young mother in Chula vista with a one-year-old baby who was actually sleeping outside; we were able to help her,” he said. “We’ve helped quite a few people. The amount of people since that story aired is tremendous; it’s a lot.”The SoCalYES team drives around in an outreach van, handing out meals and hygiene kits often. The main goal, though, is to connect those in need with the services already out there.“I saw the need, and I saw that there’s a lot of services already available it was just kind of connecting those services, connecting the dots. Especially during this pandemic, the ages of the kids that need help on the streets are younger and younger. We’re living through something I never even imagined, and the need is so real,” said Shaw.He started SoCalYES in 2019, connecting those in need with the services already out there, but helping others is nothing new for him.“At 10, 11-years-old I was volunteering at Palomar Continuing Care Center, Palomar Hospital Emergency Room, I was there for two or three years. San Pasqual Volunteer Fire Department, Rady Children’s Hospital, Ronald McDonald House, it’s something I’ve done for a long time, it’s something I enjoy doing.”During a time where things are difficult for so many, Shaw takes comfort in knowing when people are down, others will always be there to pick them right back up.“It’s not just me, you know, there’s a lot of people in the background making things happen,” he said. “We’ve noticed an uptick in people who really want to help.”SoCalYES is holding a “Holiday Heroes Toy Drive” for Christmas.They have identified more than 100 less-fortunate youth and asked each person to create a Christmas wish list with a few items. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - An 18-month-old toddler ingested marijuana at a home in San Ysidro, San Diego Police said.Officers said a nurse at Sharp Chula Vista called them Sunday about 5:30 p.m. about the incident.The child ingested the pot at a home on Beyer Blvd and was taken to Rady Children's Hospital, the nurse said.San Diego Police said child abuse investigators are looking into the matter. 399

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A two-year-old girl found strapped to the chest of an immigrant teenager is in the custody of Immigrations and Customs Enforcement officials, the U.S. Border Patrol said Monday.The girl was part of a group of six undocumented immigrants found traveling near Campo Nov. 27, officials said.The 17-year-old boy who was carrying the girl said she had been with her mother the previous night, but the mother became tired and asked the teen to hold her daughter. When the group separated, he could not locate the mother, he told Border Patrol officials.Authorities are trying to reunite the girl with her mother.The U.S. Border Patrol said it maintains a high level of vigilance in border zones to prevent the smuggling of humans, drugs, and other contraband. 780

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - An elderly woman died while she was with her family waiting to cross the border into San Diego Sunday afternoon, according to our reporting partner Televisa.Televisa reported it is unknown why the woman, who was in her late 80s, passed away.This comes as people on both sides of the border expressed frustration at incredibly long wait times."It's unfortunate because I think the policies that CBP puts in place, protocols, punish border crossers," Pedro Rios said. He said it took four hours to cross in Otay Mesa on Saturday.New protocols went into effect on Friday due to the pandemic. Customs and Border Protection planned on slowing down traffic, closing lanes and adding secondary inspections, aimed at delaying those traveling for non-essential reasons.In addition to San Diego, Tucson, Arizona, El Paso, and Laredo Texas have similar protocols in place.One woman waiting to cross into San Ysidro told Televisa, "Yes it is difficult, but no one wants to be here in Tijuana."Another woman said they were heading to the U.S. to visit friends and go to the beach. When Televisa asked if they thought that was essential travel, they replied in Spanish, "Yes, because we're tired and angry. If you're following the regulations, staying away from people, have your mask and disinfectant ... if you're following the protocol, you can."The restrictions on non-essential travel do not apply to anyone crossing the border for work, school, or medical treatment.The restrictions are set to continue through September 21.ABC 10News reached out to CBP for comment and will update this story when they respond. 1630
