SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A former La Jolla Country Day School teacher pleaded guilty Thursday to having sex with a 17-year-old female student and faces up to one year in local custody.An Oct. 21 sentencing date is scheduled for Jonathan Sammartino, 37, who also could face lifetime sex offender registration and be prohibited from teaching again at any school.San Diego County Superior Court Judge Charles G. Rogers, who took Sammartino's plea to a felony count of unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor, said he was "not inclined" to impose sex offender registration, but still might do so at the sentencing hearing.As part of the plea agreement, felony counts of oral copulation of a minor and digital penetration of a minor were dismissed.Sammartino, the son of U.S. District Judge Janis Sammartino, remains out of custody, pending the sentencing hearing.The victim, identified only as "Jane Doe" in court proceedings, testified earlier this year at Sammartino's preliminary hearing that the first sexual encounter happened in the early part of 2016, when he arrived at her home unannounced around midnight. She said she went outside to meet with him in his car, at which point he told her he didn't trust himself around her.Sexual encounters occurred that night in his car and on several other occasions in his vehicle and his house over the next few months, she testified.The victim, who went on to attend UC Berkeley, filed a report with campus police in the summer of 2018. Charges were filed later that year.In a recorded phone call played during the preliminary hearing, Sammartino admitted to the past encounters with the victim."Why did you do it? You knew I was 17," Doe says on the recording. "You knew I was your student. You knew it was my first time and I lost my virginity to you.""I don't have a good answer, because I wasn't thinking through what I was doing," he replied, apologizing to her several times throughout the call. "I can't believe that I did that."At the preliminary hearing, defense attorney Eugene Iredale unsuccessfully argued to have the charges reduced to misdemeanors, and introduced evidence regarding a 2015 bicycling accident in which Sammartino hit a pothole while riding in La Jolla and landed on his head. Sammartino was hospitalized and had to re-learn some functions before going back to the classroom, according to the defense attorney.Iredale argued that the brain injury affected his emotions and ability to make reasonable judgments, playing "a significant factor" in the commission of the charged acts.Rogers ruled against the defense request in January. Though he said he believed Sammartino had been affected by the injury and was unlikely to re- offend, he stated that the sexual nature of the defendant's relationship with the teen was entirely his idea."She wanted an emotional relationship with Dr. Sammartino. That is abundantly clear, and frankly, I think it's also clear that he wanted and needed an emotional relationship with her. But the sex was not her idea; the sex was his idea," Rogers said. SAN DIEGO — A College Area nonprofit that is seeing record requests for its services may not survive the pandemic itself.Sharia's Closet provides free clothes to people who have an emergency need. Founder Shamine Linton said with the Coronavirus pandemic, the organization has already served more than 2,500 families in 2020, a record pace. "Due to unemployment, homelessness and domestic violence, our needs have grown," Linton said. Sharia's Closet, named for Linton's daughter, operates out of a former dental office near San Diego State University. It's divided into five rooms that are filled with clothes for children, teens, men and women - casual to professional. Linton said the organization gets connected to families through 54 social service organizations. While the demand is at an all-time high, the prospects of surviving past 2020 are not. "I don't think I'll have the money to continue for the next year," Linton said. Linton said the organization survives off community donations, but those have lagged in this economy. She has reduced hours for her staff of two, and the closet is now only open three days a week. The formerly manageable ,500 in monthly operating costs is now becoming daunting. "I'm hoping for financial donations to help keep our doors open, to help keep the service for the community that needs it the most," Linton said.Linton said Sharia's Closet has been able to receive public assistance for personal protective equipment, but not operations. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A 53-year-old woman caught in the crossfire of an argument between two men in the Mountain View neighborhood of San Diego suffered a non-life threatening gunshot wound, police said Saturday morning.The men were arguing at 37th Street and Ocean View Boulevard about 11:40 p.m. Friday, according to Officer Robert Heims of the San Diego Police Department.The victim was sitting in a vehicle that was between the two men as they argued. During the argument one of the men pulled a gun and shot at the other man, but struck the women in her left hip, Heims said.The woman drove away and police found her about a block away. She was taken to a hospital for treatment of her gunshot wound, he said.No other injuries were reported.A detailed description of the shooter was not immediately available. 818

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A five-vehicle pileup at a College Area intersection left two young women severely injured and sent four others drivers to the hospital, police said Thursday.The crash was reported around 9:10 p.m. Wednesday at the intersection of 70th Street and El Cajon Boulevard, San Diego police Officer John Buttle said.A 63-year-old man driving a 2016 Mercedes E400 eastbound on El Cajon Boulevard suffered an unknown medical issue and slammed into the back of a 2015 Ford Fusion sitting in the northbound turn lane to 70th Street, Buttle said.The impact pushed both vehicles into the westbound lanes, where they were both struck by three vehicles -- a Nissan Rogue SUV, a BMW and a Honda Civic, the officer said. At that point, the Ford caught fire, leaving two 22-year-old women trapped inside before witnesses pulled them from the car.Both women suffered second- and third-degree burns over 70% of their bodies, along with uncontrolled internal bleeding, Buttle said. They were taken to a hospital for treatment of their injuries, which were considered life-threatening.The Mercedes driver was taken to a hospital for treatment of unknown injuries, Officer Tony Martinez said.The Nissan driver, a 20-year-old woman, the BMW driver, a 63-year-old man, and the Honda driver were taken to local hospitals for treatment of minor injuries, Buttle said.No details about the Honda driver were immediately available. 1427
