BEIJING, Dec. 22 (Xinhua) -- Chinese lawmakers have heard a series of the State Council's reports on the development of ethnic minorities, and regarding the country's health care reform and service industry, at a meeting Wednesday during the bimonthly session of the Standing Committee of the 11th National People's Congress (NPC), China's top legislature.The meeting was presided over by Ismail Tiliwaldi, vice chairman of the NPC Standing Committee.A total of 150 NPC Standing Committee members, including Wu Bangguo, chairman of the NPC Standing Committee, as well as other vice chairpersons of the NPC Standing Committee attended the meeting.Commissioned by the State Council, Yang Jing, minister in charge of the State Ethnic Affairs Commission, said in a report to the NPC Standing Committee that the Communist Party of China (CPC) and the central government's supports in policy, planning and funding for the ethnic minority groups and regions had yielded remarkable achievements in the country's economic and social development.In the report, Yang also pledged that the government would continue to step up infrastructure development in ethnic minority regions and spend more on education, medical services and poverty relief.Zhang Ping, director of the National Development and Reform Commission, delivered a report on deepening health care reform at the meeting.The reform had achieved various levels of progress in promotion of medical insurance, grassroots medical services and equal access of health care services for the public, Zhang said.Zhang noted that the government would further expand the coverage of the medical insurance system, intensify supervision over medical service providers and make more progress in the reform of the country's publicly-owned hospitals.Zhang also delivered a report on accelerating the development of the country's secondary industries. China's service industry has been experiencing rapid growth from 2006 to 2010 with an increase in its competitiveness, Zhang said.The service industry has been making increasing contributions to the country's job market, as well, Zhang said.However, Zhang commented that it still lags behind the country's overall development, and could not meet the demand of the country's economic and social development.In his report, Zhang urged creating a favorable policy and system environment for the development of the country's service industry.The meeting also reviewed a written report about Wu Bangguo's visit to Cambodia, Indonesia and Thailand.Also on Wednesday, a meeting of the chairman and vice-chairpersons of the NPC Standing Committee, presided over by Wu Bangguo, has decided to put the draft agenda of the fourth plenary meeting of the 11th NPC to the vote at the ongoing NPC Standing Committee session.The 18th session of the Standing Committee of the 11th NPC runs from Dec.20 to 25.

NANJING, Dec. 12 (Xinhua) -- China on Sunday started to extend a memorial wall to engrave more names of those massacred by Japanese aggressors more than 70 years ago in Nanjing.After extension, the "wailing wall", a part of the Memorial Hall of the Victims in Nanjing Massacre by Japanese Invaders, will have 10,324 names on it, curator Zhu Chengshan said.The wall was engraved with 3,000 names when it was first built in 1995, and the list was expanded to more than 8,600 names in 2007 when the memorial reopened after a major repair and extension to mark the 70th anniversary of the massacre.The original wall was 43 meters long and 3.5 meters high. The extension will lengthen the wall by 26.5 meters, with 1,655 more names added to it, according to Zhu.Nanjing Massacre happened during World War II after Japanese troops occupied Nanjing, then capital of China, on Dec. 13, 1937. More than 300,000 Chinese were killed in the month-long atrocity.To collect the names of the victims is an important but tough job in the research of the massacre, as it is hard to seek witnesses and related documents decades after the holocaust, said Zhu.

ADDIS ABABA, Dec. 24 (Xinhua) -- The Commissioner for Peace and Security of the African Union (AU) Ramtane Lamamra, and the Ambassador of the People's Republic of China in Ethiopia Gu Xiaojie on Friday signed an agreement on the provision of aid to the AU Mission in Somalia (AMISOM).The grant amounting to 30 million RMB, (over 4 million U.S. dollars), will be used to supply equipment and materials for AMISOM. The signing of this agreement comes in the wake of the adoption by the United Nations Security Council, on Dec. 22, of resolution 1964(2010), in which it, inter alia, requested the Secretary- General to continue to provide a logistical support package for AMISOM, for a maximum troop strength of 12,000, as called for by resolution 1863 (2009).In resolution 1964(2010), the Security Council also called on UN Member States and regional and international organizations to make direct bilateral donations in support of AMISOM.By generously providing aid to AMISOM, the People's Republic of China is responding to the call made by the United Nations Security Council and the earlier appeal by the AU Peace and Security Council (PSC) for AU partners to support the ongoing efforts in Somalia, AU said in a statement. Gu Xiaojie reiterated China's continued commitment to strengthen its cooperation with the AU in the area of peace and security and to support all endeavors in this regard. He lauded AU's efforts and resolve towards the promotion of peace, security and reconciliation in Somalia.Speaking on the occasion, Commissioner Lamamra stated said that "China has, over the years, been providing multifaceted assistance to the AU and African countries as they strive to address the many challenges facing the continent. "Let the Bullets Fly" has raked in over 400 million yuan (59.7 million U.S. dollars) in box office since its debut on Dec. 16, while "If You are the One II" has made 200 million yuan within five days since its release.The crackdown was ordered by the National Office Against Pornographic and Illegal Publications and the General Administration of Press and Publication "in order to protect and boost the development of China's film industry," a statement from the office said Friday.The statement said the crackdown is part of a half-year national campaign against infringement of intellectual property rights (IPR), which is underway.The two departments asked local market watchdogs to enhance market inspections to weed out illegal workshops producing pirated video products.
