SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - It sounds like a deal of a lifetime - guarantee a weeklong vacation at a coastal resort every year - for a one-time payment of 0.The county of San Diego is auctioning off nearly 900 timeshares, some in areas like Del Mar, Solana Beach, Carlsbad and downtown for as little as 0. Timeshares can also be transferred to out-of-town hotels, one year at a time. The county expects many to go at the initial offering price. A timeshare is when a person shares in the ownership of a property with others, so that each gets a week of vacation per year. Many of the timeshares were repossessed after the Great Recession, when owners failed to pay at least five years of property tax. "For one week of family bliss in a vacation once a year, this may be the opportunity for as little as 0," said Dan McAllister, the county treasurer-tax collector. "But it is a buyer beware sale."San Diego attorney Dan Eaton said there are many risks to buying a timeshare, and getting out of one can be very difficult."If you think you're just buying a 0 timeshare and you've got access to the timeshare for life without any further cost, that's a huge mistake," Eaton said. Timeshares include annual fees - including maintenance - that can get very expensive."If you stop paying those fees, they can foreclose," Eaton said. "It's an interest in real property."At the Solana Beach Sand Pebbles resort - starting bid 0 - annual fees range from 4 to 2 depending on unit size. And some of the timeshares don't include some parts of the year. Allison Russell, the resort's property manager, said it's vital people do their due diligence before buying. She said the resort books up early, and owners need to reserve their week sometimes far in advance.Eaton said timeshares can work if you plan to go to the same resort year after year, but with so many options now available - including airbnb - it may be best to keep that 0.The county auction is online and runs from May 4 to May 9. Registration begins April 2. 2064

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- It's survival of the fittest once again for gyms and fitness centers across the county as San Diego braces for stricter pandemic-related restrictions that go into effect Saturday. One gym preparing for the big shift is major chain 24 Hour Fitness. While members can't choose from their dozens of locations to workout, seven county locations will be open and offering outdoor equipment to members."We're committed to staying outdoors, staying safe, and the well-being of our members is the priority," said 24 Hour Fitness district manager John Amato.Amato told ABC 10News that member visits will be reservation based with 90-minute windows, minimized to 57 guests at a time. While many prepared for what's to come, others like gym owner Tom Green of Green Speed Training in Eastlake did the opposite. Instead of expanding his outdoor space for members, he doubled the square footage on the inside, even though guests won't be allowed to workout indoors until the county falls in a less restrictive tier."It's certainly risky, but I've always been kind of a risk taker and I go with my gut instinct, and if I feel good about it, I go for it," Green said.Since the COVID-19 pandemic began, Green said support from the Eastlake community along with members of his gym have helped keep things afloat and allowed him to upgrade indoor space."It's very supportive, and we have a lot of great clients who really support what we're doing,” said Green.Regardless, both gyms said they'll continue to be there for their clients no matter which tier San Diego slips into next."To get that one-hour workout in, and de-stress to stay healthy, that's what our goal is,” said Amato. 1691

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — In the midst of a housing supply crunch, San Diego is seeing apartments taken off market and reserved for short-term vacationers. The units would add to the estimated 16,000 vacation rentals now available in the City of San Diego, according to a recent audit. Now, a company called Sonder has signed master leases at apartment complexes and towers in locations including downtown, North Park, Little Italy, and Point Loma. Instead of renting them full time, the company leases them to visitors, charging more than 0 per unit on an average night. "Every San Diego resident needs to be afraid of that," said Brian Curry, whose group Save San Diego Neighborhoods is tracking Sonder. "It's a huge crisis, drives up rents, drives up housing prices."Curry's group estimates Sonder has leased more than 70 units and counting, including entire buildings in some locations. A spokesman for Sonder declined comment Thursday. In the past, the company has stated it pays all local taxes and that it has the right to sublease to short-term renters. Additionally, it has noted that developers have used increased revenue from Sonder to build even more market rate units. Still, City Councilwoman Barbara Bry said she was appalled at the practice and says the city should be ensuring developers deliver on the units the city approves. "Private developers tell us, 'let us build more units, let the market take care of our housing problem,' and then they artificially remove units and turn them into short-term vacation rentals," she said. "That's not fair."Meanwhile, the city code enforcement division is continuing to investigate The Louisiana complex on University Avenue. The city approved the complex as a 13-unit mixed-use apartment complex, but Sonder has the master lease for each of the market-rate units. The only confirmation so far is that the two low-income units on the property are leased to San Diegans who qualified. 1947

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Less than two weeks before Halloween, people across the county are getting creative and building candy chutes in hopes of a safer version of door-to-door trick-or-treating.In the yard of the Witthoft home in Lakeside, a large display stands in testament to a four-decade old family tradition of Halloween fright."We love Halloween. It's a fun holiday, a scary holiday. Seeing people dressed up. It's a lot of fun," said Chris Witthoft.Witthoft says part of that fun is handing out candy. That tradition, like so many things this year, is wrapped in uncertainty because of the pandemic."We've done it for so long. Just don't want to let the kids down," said Witthoft. So Witthoft and her family decided to build their own solution: two candy chutes created from PVC pipes and then painted. Witthoft and other family members will push the candy down the chute, staying six feet from the kids."All of us will have gloves and masks on, with social distancing circles along our fence," said Witthoft.Witthoft says the line to get to the candy will be socially distanced, while the chute and nearby areas will be constantly wiped down.To the west, in Rolando Village, Amberosia Vivar has designs on her own candy slide."Will make it out of PVC pipe ... It brings a little excitement for families stuck inside for months. I know my kids have been looking forward to Halloween for months," said Vivar.Across social media, ABC 10news has seen countless examples of San Diegans creating similar candy chutes, but is it safe? County guidelines recommend against any door-to-door trick-or-treating, a chief concern is kids congregating to get the candy. That 'congregating' is also a potential issue with the candy chutes. It's something the Witthofts and Vivar say they'll be watching out for."We can remind the kids, remind the families, maintain your distance," said Vivar."We want to be as safe as possible but still want to carry on our tradition for the kids," said Witthoft. 1995

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- If you're feeling a little behind on your sleep schedule, Wednesday is your day to catch up! February 28 is National Public Sleeping Day. Don't take it too far though, you might get in trouble if you nap at work! There are different types of naps, according to nationaldaycalendar.com. "The Power Nap is approximately 10 to 20 minutes long and can give a boost of energy to get us through the rest of the day," the website writes. "It also doesn’t leave us drowsy like some longer naps might and will also allow us to fall asleep at a decent time at night."Our Scripps Digital Producer created the above note for you to take to work or school. It probably won't work...but it least it will make you smile. Good luck catching up on zzz's!   802
