While kids are on summer break, districts across the country are working to determine whether or not to reopen schools, and how to do it safely.School leaders are racing the clock to figure out what the next school year will look like.“We’ve been looking at how can we provide a high quality education in this environment,” said Lisa Yates, Superintendent at Buena Vista School District.For Yates, that decision is simple.“We’re hearing that from families, we’re hearing that from students, we want to be back in school,” she said.At Buena Vista Middle and High School in the Colorado mountains, summer school is in session at their brand new, still under construction, building. Students and teachers are piloting a new platform that leaders hope will help come fall.The platform was installed in early June and created by tech company Wolk. It works like this -- first, gateways are installed in classroom ceilings.“The system is called Open,” said Rene Otto, Solutions Architect for Wolk.com.Next, students and teachers put on a wearable device at the beginning of the school day. “They’re given these safety cards or wristbands, so what these do is they act as beacons,” she explained.The devices currently use Bluetooth to communicate. Using the gateways, the software shows when a beacon comes within a certain amount of space of another beacon, for how long, and if the beacon moves rooms.“The point of it was to help people understand where they are in a physical space, so we can figure out if safe social distancing is being practiced,” Otto said.The school district’s technology coordinator, Matt Brooker, helped install the system. “If we did have an incident where a kid is positive, could we do contact tracing with this?” he said.For students, the idea seems simple enough.“It’s going to record where you walk and how close you get to other people,” 6th grade Aidan explained. “It’s like wearing a little necklace. It doesn’t really bother me that much.” Others weren’t as convinced. “Personally, I don’t know if a lot of people are going to want to wear them,” 10th grader Taylor said.With every tracking device comes concerns over data and privacy.“It took me a little bit,” said Reba Jackson, a teacher at the school. “I’m a little paranoid about tracking things.”“I went from feeling like it might be a little bit invasive,” teacher Robin Fritsch, explained. “It’s not a big deal. If it gives us valuable data, I’m in.”Otto said not to worry.“We really want to make sure privacy is protected. So the way it works is, only the administrators of the schools have access to the identifying information,” she explained. In other words, each tracker has a number as the identifying name. Only school admin members are able to match that number with a student. “I don’t think any parents or people want to be tracked by a technology company generally. But if that information can help make people safer, I think it’s valuable.”Otto said for the system to work fully, they need at least 60% of students and teachers using it. This helps find hot spots that potentially need more cleaning or more attention to create a better socially distanced space.“I think it’s going to be a valuable tool,” Fritsch said.As students come back, the hope is that the system will help identify who has come into contact with someone who tested positive for COVID-19, and stop the spread there. This could mean the difference between sending 10 kids home and sending the entire school home in the event of a positive case.“Typically rural communities, as far as economic development, don’t have the resources the major metropolitan areas might have,” said Wendell Pryor, Director of Chaffee County Economic Development Corporation. “So any tool like this that aids in the threat of an outbreak and the way it might spread, I think is going to be a bonus to everybody involved.”“In person is where we want to be, so we’re putting our resources there,” Superintendent Yates said. 3979

Pizza Hut is banking on its customers to say, "Cold beer."Pizza Hut announced on Wednesday that beer delivery will be available at 100 of its Arizona and California locations. The company said beer delivery is part of a nationwide pilot program. The beer will be stored in special coolers to keep it cold during delivery. Coors Light, Blue Moon and Miller High Life will be among the offerings. Customers who order a six-pack in some Arizona markets will have their delivery fee waived. "Nothing complements an oven-hot pizza like an ice-cold beer," said Zipporah Allen, CMO, Pizza Hut. "In addition to our extensive delivery network, many Pizza Hut restaurants are already licensed to serve and distribute beer, without third party services, additional fees, or extended wait times. Expanding the pilot program is a natural way for Pizza Hut to get our customers the perfect pizza and beer combo they're craving, delivered right to their doors." Pizza Hut said it currently offers beer delivery at participating restaurants in Phoenix, Tucson, Glendale, Prescott, and Winslow in Arizona, along with participating restaurants in Los Angeles, Bakersfield, Riverside, Sacramento, Santa Barbara and Santa Clara in California. WHEAT RIDGE, Colo. — If dedication to a passion distinguishes a champion from a crowd, Marlys Halbeisen just might be the one who stands out.“Nothing would be anything without her,” said Tamera Halbeisen, Marlys' daughter-in-law.“They’re not just getting a card, they’re getting a message from us saying – ‘We care about you,’” Marlys Halbeisen said.For the past three years, Marlys has transformed her Wheat Ridge home into a smaller version of Santa’s workshop for a cause near and dear to her heart.“My husband was in the military,” Marlys said. “He served in the Korean War.”In 2018, she personalized 2,700 Christmas cards for troops overseas.Last year, she did 18,000. And this year — an astounding 40,000.“The pandemic was good,” Marlys said, laughing. “I couldn’t go anywhere, so I just worked on cards.”KMGH first met Marlys last year, when the company she had lined up to ship the cards simply vanished.In the days that followed, KMGH viewers stepped up and donated so much money to the TV station's fund, that they not only paid for the shipping last year, they were able to pay for the cards and shipping this year, as well.“After visiting three stores, I bought 35,000 cards,” Marlys said.She also received about 5,000 donated cards.“Cards come every day," Marlys said. “Yesterday, I got a bag of cards.”The plan this year was to have multiple card-writing parties. That didn’t happen.“We were going to have everybody for the fun night – write the cards,” Marlys said. “Well, of course, the pandemic prevented that.”And yet, somehow, this 78-year-old would find the silver lining.“It was wonderful,” Marlys said. “I was never bored. Everybody said, ‘Oh, ‘I’m so bored.’ And I go, ‘Well, why don’t you write some cards?’”It’s also been said that one can’t expect everyone to have the same dedication as one does one's self.“Well, you know, I always thought that you find the best help at the end of your arms," Marlys said.And so it was. This one woman show who amazed us last year did it again this year.“Beyond proud,” Tamera said. “I mean, this has just given her even more dedication.”“This does make such a huge difference in a GI’s life,” said James Boxrud, manager with the U.S. Postal Service in Denver. “I remember being overseas at Christmas when I was in the service. WESTLAKE VILLAGE (CNS) - Westlake Village-based Guitar Center, the country's largest retailer of instruments and musical equipment, joined a growing list of companies impacted by the economic toll of the COVID-19 pandemic, filing for bankruptcy, according to a report Sunday.Guitar Center has about 300 stores across the U.S., and its sister brands include Music & Arts, which has more than 200 stores specializing in band and orchestral instruments for sale and rent, according to the Los Angeles Times.The filing in the Eastern District of Virginia gives the company a break on its debts by letting it stay in business as it seeks to carry out a restructuring plan, the Times reported.According to the report, a restructuring support agreement announced Nov. 13 requires new financing backed by existing creditors, in addition to 5 million in new equity investments from its parent company, Ares Management Corp., as well as the Carlyle Group and Brigade Capital Management.Moody's Investor Service explained that the coronavirus shutdown has hit nonessential retailers hard, and that Guitar Center was particularly vulnerable because musical instruments are highly discretionary item. The company's stores were shut down in mid-March when the pandemic began in earnest. Since then, the Times reported, it has reopened some locations while maintaining online operations.Guitar Center claims it has liabilities of between billion and billion, with a similar range for its assets, according to the filing.According to the report, Ares acquired the company in 2014 in an out-of-court restructuring of Guitar Center's substantial debt load, the result of a deal by Bain Capital LP in 2007 to take it private. 1728
