SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The father whose two children died in a Rancho Bernardo home fire in 2017 was found guilty on all counts Monday. Jurors found Henry Lopez guilty of two counts of child endangerment, recklessly causing a fire causing great bodily injury, and two counts of involuntary manslaughter in the death of his two children.Prosecutors argued Lopez fell asleep with a lit cigarette, starting the fire that killed 7-year-old Isabella and 10-year-old Cristos and destroyed his condominium. Lopez’ attorney said a defective cell phone was the likely ignition source. Lopez woke up to find his home on fire and tried to escape but passed out from smoke, investigators said. Firefighters later found him and took him to the hospital. Deputy District Attorney Kyle Sutterley said Cristos died of burns to more than 80 percent of his body and Isabella died of smoke inhalation. "A parent has a responsibility to care for their children, a responsibility to protect their children, and if need be, to sacrifice themselves for their children. And Henry Lopez, on Oct. 28, 2017, he failed his children, and as a result, one of them burned to death, and one of them went to sleep and never woke up,'' Sutterley said in his closing argument. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – The Fleet Science Center is offering a program that helps San Diego students navigate their way through any challenges they face while distance learning.Participating students will have to go through a health screening before entering the building at Balboa Park.Once inside, classrooms are transformed into individual hubs. Students each have a workspace where they use their own electronic device to connect to their distance learning classrooms. Educators are there helping with any issues that may come up.Andia Pebdani, the Youth Engagement Manager for the Fleet Science Center, said the idea of the hubs came from families who needed help juggling the work life with schools being closed.“Some families don’t have the option at home, or it’s like, ‘I needed to do this so I can do my job, but I can also make sure my student is on the computer,’” said Pebdani.During breaks, educators work on different science activities with the kids or they get tours of different parts of their museum since their doors are still closed to the public.The cost for this program is 0-0 a week depending on whether you have a membership with the center. UC San Diego Health System is the first on the West Coast to use Dynamic Morphology Correction, a type of 3D imaging. It allows surgeons to compare scans taken before the procedure to real-time pictures during the surgery.Dr. Mahmoud Malas, Chief of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery at UC San Diego, says this type of technology uses minimal iodine contrast which lessens the chance of kidney problems for 25 percent of patients dealing with aneurysms.The data from this technology helps surgeons across the country.Dr. Malas adds, " They create prediction models that helps future surgeons perform procedures more accurately." 795

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Students distracted and bitten in class at Madison Senior High in Clairemont are hoping for some help to make the mosquitoes go away.The west side of campus, against Doliva Dr., is where people told 10News they were bitten. The same area houses special needs classes. 10News was sent two pictures, one of a student, with special needs, whose calf was bitten by a mosquito, and another of a dead mosquito. It appears to be black with white spots or stripes."It was really bad and it was burning and everything," Junior Arryonna said. She was bitten in art class Thursday."I feel like my ankle starts itching so I'm like what's on my ankle, so I look and I got two bumps on the side of my ankle," she said reaching down to scratch. She said she's allergic, making the bites that much worse.The school district says the first report of a mosquito bite came mid-September, around the first time Aryonna said she was bit. Pest Control came out twice and deployed an organic compound in the drain to kill mosquito larvae.
