SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Images of burning homes, helicopters and flames are now a regular occurrence in California.This summer, that wildfire threat became real for the Del Cerro community.“We could hear the exploding palm trees, we could smell the toxic, frightening smoke," remembers Glenn Thomas, Vice Chair of Friends of Del Cerro.The group wanted to do something to pay back firefighters for all they do for the community. They wanted to know what the department needs to help firefighters do their job better. “We believe you find out what people want and you give it to them!” said Thomas.Friends of Del Cerro teamed up with the San Diego Fire Rescue Foundation to make something happen.What the department needs, Thomas learned, is more wildland firefighting hand tools. While these tools are currently on brush trucks, the department wants them on every engine.“There are so many more vegetation fires, and they grow so much bigger now," said Deputy Chief Steve Wright. “Something we needed that’s going to be a force-multiplier on vegetation fires that we didn’t have the immediate budget for."The group plans to raise ,000 for the tools and is halfway there thanks to a generous donation from the Padres.If you'd like to help, donate here. 1261

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Mission Beach residents and tourists could be getting some relief from dockless scooters speeding down the boardwalk as San Diego's summer season approaches.The Mayor's Office is working on an emergency ordinance banning electric scooters, like those used from services such as LimeBike or Bird, from the Mission Beach Boardwalk, from Crystal Pier south to the jetty."Residents have complained about [the] continued reckless use of motorized (electric) scooters along the Mission Beach Boardwalk. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — If you’re still holding on to a mail-in ballot, return it using a method other than the U.S. Postal Service at this point.That’s the recommendation from many election experts after a ruling this week by the U.S. Supreme Court.In California, mail-in ballots have to be postmarked on or before November 3, but they can be received by county officials up to 17 days late and still count. That’s one of the most generous buffers of any state.But in about 30 states, the deadline for receipt is November 3. Ballots that arrive after will be tossed out, even ballots that were postmarked well before Election Day.The latest Supreme Court ruling dealt with a case out of Wisconsin, which had an Election Day deadline for ballot receipt set by state lawmakers.A lower federal court sided with the Democratic National Committee and ruled the deadline for receipt should be extended because of the pandemic. An analysis by the Wall Street Journal found it took an average of 10 days for a piece of first class mail to reach its destination in Wisconsin.But the Supreme Court ruled Monday 5-3 that state lawmakers should have the final say on this question, not the federal courts.“That could have tremendous implications across the country because it suggests that the Supreme Court is going to defer to even strict rules that could have the effect of limiting the counting of certain ballots,” said legal analyst Dan Eaton.Wisconsin is one of about 30 states with this deadline that ballots have to be received by Election Day, along with Pennsylvania and Michigan; two states with similar cases still pending.Voters in those states are being urged to drop off ballots at official collection sites, not at the post office, or vote in person.“This ruling does put pressure on people to make sure that their ballot is received in time,” Eaton said.Eaton said concurrence opinions by Justices Brett Kavanaugh and Neil Gorsuch offer clues about how the high court could rule in other election-legal fights, particularly when Amy Coney Barrett joins the court. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - It’s a win-win situation: a sale on airfares out of San Diego, with an ultimate destination of Hawaii. Southwest Airlines opened its flight schedule Wednesday for once-daily service out of San Diego. The flights travel to Kahului, Maui, starting Apr. 14, 2020. Flights to Honolulu begin Apr. 20, 2020, Southwest reports. Fares as low as 9 each way will be available on both routes for travel between Apr. 14 and June 4, 2020, according to the airline. The tickets must be purchased Oct. 30. "We're grateful for the steadfast loyalty of our San Diego Customers and we're adding a Southwest heading to their compass of nonstop options," said Andrew Watterson, Executive Vice President & Chief Revenue Officer for Southwest Airlines.
