PARSIPPANY-TROY HILLS, N.J. – The smiling Black chef that’s been on Cream of Wheat packaging for decades is being removed.In a statement obtained by USA Today and The New York Times, B&G Foods said that research indicates the image of the Black man may be based on an actual Chicago chef named Frank White, but it’s being removed because “it reminds some consumers of earlier depictions they find offensive.”The removal comes after the company initiated a review of the packaging in June. At that time, the business wrote that it’s committed to evaluating its packaging and would take steps to ensure it does not inadvertently contribute to racism."B&G Foods unequivocally stands against prejudice and injustice of any kind," wrote the company.It’s not immediately clear when customers can expect the Cream of Wheat packaging to be changed.The Times reports that the character on the box was once named “Rastus,” a pejorative term for Black men, and that he was once depicted as a barely literate cook who didn’t know what vitamins were.Cream of Wheat is the latest of several products which are being redesigned to remove racially insensitive imagery.Earlier this month, it was announced that Uncle Ben’s rice products would be renamed Ben’s Original and the image of Uncle Ben would be removed. PARRIS ISLAND, S.C. – Two sets of sisters graduated Marine Corps recruit training together, further strengthening their bonds.The Marine Corps Recruit Depot (MCRD) in Parris Island, South Carolina, says one set includes Virginia sisters Ashley and Amber Valentine, while the other is comprised of Maria, Vanessa and Melissa Placido Jaramillo, who grew up in Nevada.According to MCRD, the Valentine sisters joined shortly after their grandfather passed away and wanted to carry on his legacy in the U.S. armed services.Ashley, 19, and Amber, 22, say having each other to rely on through training helped during some of their highest highs and lowest lows.“I went through a moment during first phase where I received some bad news in a letter, and she was there to be a shoulder for me to lean on,” Amber said in a press release posted to MCRD’s Facebook page.However, the Valentines won’t be attending combat training together, because Ashley suffered a hip fracture prior to graduation and must heal. After combat training, Amber plans to serve in the communications field and Ashley will be certified as a motor transportation operator.As for the Placido Jaramillo family, Maria, Vanessa and Melissa made a pact to join the military together when they were young children, according to MCRD. Melissa and Vanessa, both 22, are identical twins. Maria is a year younger than them at age 21.During recruit training, Melissa says the sisters succeeded thanks to friendly competition and daily positive affirmation.MCRD says the three sisters have yet to find out what military occupational specialty they will be assigned but are looking forward to what the Marine Corps has in store for them. PINELLAS COUNTY, Fla. — Deputies say that a Florida man who robbed a bank on Thursday began throwing money out the window of his getaway car as he led police on a chase.According to the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office, just before 4 p.m., 37-year-old Anquan Walters walked into the Hancock Bank in unincorporated Clearwater wearing long pants, a long sleeve shirt, gloves, glasses with a fake beard and pantyhose over his head.Witnesses told investigators that Walters was carrying a black handgun when he jumped over the counter, he ordered people to the ground and demanded money. Walters was given an undisclosed amount of cash and he exited the bank.Detectives say Walters got into a 1998 Toyota Camry and fled northbound on U.S. Highway 19.As Walters was fleeing from the bank, multiple dye packs exploded and Walters started throwing cash out of the window of the Camry, onto U.S. Highway 19 North, deputies say.A viewer shared a photo of the money scattered on U.S. 19 with Scripps station WFTS in Tampa.Responding deputies spotted Walter's Camry traveling northbound towards the intersection of U.S. Highway 19 and Curlew Road. Deputies tried stopping Walters but he fled in the Camry at a high rate of speed, eastbound on Curlew Road from U.S. Highway 19 North.Deputies initiated a vehicle pursuit and successfully deployed a tire deflation device that deflated the tires on Walter's Camry as he approached Countryside Boulevard.Detectives say Walters lost control of the Camry and crashed into two vehicles that were stopped at the intersection of Curlew Road and Countryside Boulevard.Detectives say Corporal Phillip Love was pursuing Walter's Camry at the time of the crash. Corporal Love was unable to stop his marked 2013 Chevrolet Tahoe cruiser before crashing into Walter's Camry at the intersection.Walters reportedly abandoned the damaged Camry and fled on foot northbound into a nearby apartment complex. Deputies chased Walters on foot and apprehended him shortly after.Detectives say Walter's clothes were covered in colored dye as a result of the bank's dye pack exploding.The driver of one of the vehicles Walter hit was transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. No other injuries have been reported.Detectives arrested Walters and transported him to the Pinellas County Jail.Walters was charged with one count of Armed Robbery, one count of Fleeing and Eluding Law Enforcement, one count of Leaving the Scene of a Crash with Bodily Injury and one count of Leaving the Scene of a Crash with Property Damage.The investigation continues. 2599

(KGTV) -- A dozen undocumented migrants were arrested Thursday after they were discovered inside a stack of hay aboard a tractor trailer, Border Patrol says.According to the agency, the discovery was made at the Interstate 8 checkpoint in Pine Valley around 3:30 p.m. Thursday.USBP says a K-9 alerted Border Patrol agents about a void inside the trailer, containing the migrants.All 12 people were arrested along with the 46-year-old driver, who is a U.S. citizen, Border Patrol says.“Human smugglers have no regard for life,” said Chief Patrol Agent Aaron M. Heitke. “This tight space within the hay-stacks was not ventilated and was not designed with passenger safety in mind. I am proud of our agents. PASCO COUNTY, Fla. — Drivers continue to share stories of scary moments and narrow escapes as there are more reports of Kia Souls catching fire.New complaints led I-Team Investigator Jackie Callaway to ask why some vehicles weren't included in the automaker's past recalls for engine fire risks.Brek Badgley says his 2015 Kia Soul burst into flames while rolling down I-75 northbound in Hernando County last December. He said the fire gutted the entire vehicle within minutes.“Just tossed my phone out of the window and started throwing stuff out of the car,” Badgley said.In April 2019, Kia recalled nearly 380,000 Kia Souls made between 2012 and 2016 over a defect that they say could cause a fire. We checked Brek’s VIN and found his Soul wasn't included in that recall.The I-Team discovered not every Soul made during those years was taken off the road. Kia says that's because even within the same model year, vehicles can have different equipment.Shelly Parks' 2015 Kia Soul was among those not recalled. Parks says it caught fire as she drove near Columbus, Ohio, last summer."We hear someone yell fire, and by the time we had noticed anything, there was fire coming from underneath the car," Parks said.She told the I-Team the car was still rolling to a stop when both she and her friend jumped out.“I watched the car roll past me on fire."The I-Team also found 2018 Kia Souls catching fire, according to three reports filed with federal regulators. Kia reports these Soul fires are rare and can be caused by any number of factors not related to engine defects.In August, 34-year-old Jordan Carlton died of his injuries a year after his rented 2019 Kia Soul went up in flames as he drove down a Hawaiian highway.
