WASHINGTON, Sept. 10 (Xinhua) -- Visiting top Chinese legislator Wu Bangguo on Thursday met with U.S. President Barack Obama at the White House on bilateral relations and international and regional issues of common concern.     Wu, chairman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress, was the first top Chinese legislator that has visited the United States during the past two decades.     Before meeting with Obama, Wu met U.S. Vice President Joe Biden at the White House. Wu will hold talks with U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton later in the day. BEIJING, Aug. 2 (Xinhua) -- China on Sunday issued a regulation for the country's disabled military personnel to ensure them a guaranteed living after retired from the military.     Jointly promulgated by military authorities and Ministries of Finance and Civil Affairs, the regulation pledges that military personnel who gets disabled because of war, work or illness will be rearranged to other working positions by the government after retirement.     The retired disabled veterans will also be provided with a certain amount of compensation fee according to their different levels of disabilities.     Other welfare include medical care subsidy and a basic housing allowance of at least 100,000 yuan (14.706 U.S. dollars) to each disabled veterans, the regulation said.     Non-commissioned officers at junior grades who are diagnosed as mental illnesses and enlisted soldiers who are diagnosed as disabilities from level I to level IV will be sustained by the government for the rest of their lives, it said.     The regulation is the first of its kind in China.

URUMQI, July 19 (Xinhua) -- Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region would accelerate local legislation against separatism, said the region's top lawmaker on Sunday.     Eligen Imibakhi, chairman of the Standing Committee of the Xinjiang Regional People's Congress, said the regional congress would unswervingly safeguard the dignity and authority of the Constitution and other laws .     The July 5 incident involving beating, smashing, looting and burning, was a severe violent crime colluded, planned and organized by "three forces" of extremism, separatism and terrorism both at home and abroad, said the regional top legislator.     A most urgent problem to be solved was the lack of law booklets in ethnic minority languages, he said. The region had organized experts to do the translation work and the booklets would soon be distributed to farmers and herdsmen across the region, he added.

DAMASCUS, July 30 (Xinhua) -- Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Moallem said Thursday that Syria is willing to enhance cooperation with China on the basis of mutual benefits.     Moallem made the pledge during a meeting with Wu Sike, China's Special Envoy to the Middle East, and both sides discussed bilateral relations and the latest situation in the Middle East region.     Wu reiterated that China supports Syria's commitment to achieving a just and comprehensive peace based on the relevant UN resolutions. As the special representative of the Chinese Foreign Minister, he had visited Algeria and Qatar before reaching Syria.

BEIJING, July 24 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao Friday called for the whole nation to further promote the development of national defense with the help of the nation's economic development.     Hu, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission (CMC), made the remarks during a meeting held by CPC Central Committee Political Bureau ahead of the 82nd founding anniversary of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) on Aug. 1.     Hu said "the country should take both economic and national defense development into consideration and develop the armed forces featuring an integration of the military and the people."     To realize the goal, efforts are needed in establishing sound weapon systems and equipment research and manufacturing, military personnel training and logistics that combine military construction with people's support, he said.     Emphasis should be made in scientific exchanges between fields of national defense and civilian use.     He further stressed it is the responsibility of both the Party and entire nation to build a powerful and solid armed force and national defense power.
