SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego Humane Society released a series of tips to help keep pets safe this holiday season."With the bustling holiday season upon us, San Diego Humane Society reminds pet owners to consider their pets' safety when decking the halls," an SDHS release said. Keep dangerous ornaments such as glass and tinsel -- which can be a choking hazard -- on high branches, out of the reach of little paws. Cords from lights should be taped down or otherwise secured to prevent pets from chewing on them-- Keep an eye on items under the tree. Don't let pets drink water from the base of a live tree as it may be stagnant and contain bacteria. Ribbons and bows can be a choking hazard and any packages filled with edible gifts are likely to be discovered-- A number of holiday season plants are toxic or can cause digestive upset to pets if nibbled or eaten, including amaryllis, Christmas cactus, Christmas rose, evergreens, holly, ivy, juniper, lilies, mistletoe and poinsettias. Be sure all plants are kept out of reach of pets-- Burning candles should be placed high, out of any pet's way. A dog's tail wag or a cat's curiosity could be devastating. Homes with fireplaces should use screens to avoid accidental burns-- Pets can get stressed with noise and activity. Give a pet a quiet, secure place with a bed and their favorite toys to escape the commotion. Put food, water and a litter box for cats in that space-- Holiday distractions may make it easier for pets to escape through open doors. Keep pets safely indoors and always make sure they're wearing current ID tags with a phone number and that their microchip information is up to date-- Pets thrive on routine and increased activity during the holiday season can upset that routine. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The North County Transit District will temporarily reduce service for its Coaster commuter trains starting Monday until further notice amid a drop in ridership tied to the coronavirus outbreak.Weekday train service will be reduced by about 50%, particularly around the noon hour, when several northbound and southbound trains will be suspended. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego Airport Authority announced Monday that the Pacific Highway Economy parking lot will permanently close to the public the day after Christmas.The lot will be converted into employee parking, according to airport officials. The need for a new employee lot was brought on by construction of a new stormwater infiltration system at the south side of the runway, where employees currently park. The new system is part of the airport's Stormwater Management Plan to control and reduce pollution caused by the airport's day-to-day operations.Airport travelers will still be able to use the parking lots at both terminals, the Terminal 2 parking plaza and the airport's long-term parking lot. "All Californians are being asked to stay at home if you do not need to go out for essential reasons."The increase in cases included 27 people hospitalized, with seven of the cases involving people aged 80 or older. There have been no deaths due to the illness in the county, according to the county health department's latest information.Of the 131 positive cases, 110 are residents of the county -- 18 of them hospitalized; 11 are under federal quarantine, with six of those patients hospitalized; and 10 are non-residents, three of whom are hospitalized. The vast majority -- 99 cases -- of those who have tested positive have been under the age of 60. One individual's age is unknown.Gov. Gavin Newsom issued a statewide "stay-at-home" order Thursday night, advising residents not to leave their homes except for essential needs.Essential services will remain open, including: gas stations, pharmacies, banks, laundromats, and places to obtain food, including grocery stores, farmers markets, food banks, convenience stores, take-out and delivery restaurants.Any other public event or gathering is considered non-essential and is banned under the order until further notice.Health officials have asked local hospitals and laboratories to comply with county orders to report all testing results, positive or negative. If a daycare or related business has more than 10 children, each group needs to be in separate rooms and cannot intermingle.
