BEIJING, Feb. 19 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang has demanded the comprehensive enforcement of the country's food safety laws, urging checks to be tightened against unsafe food products.China should enhance efforts to ensure food safety, which is crucial for protecting human lives and improving people's living standards, Li said while addressing a meeting on food safety on Friday, according to an official statement issued Saturday.Also, emphasis should be directed to both special campaigns, which are launched to check against unsafe food, as well as daily supervision of food manufacturers, he said.The meeting also heard reports on food safety delivered by officials from health and agriculture ministries, the State Administration for Industry and Commerce, and the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine.Participants at the meeting agreed that China should improve its system to monitor and assess food safety risks and enhance emergency response capabilities in this regard.They also called for improvement of food safety-related laws and regulations, as well as measures to target those core factors that affect the safety of food products.At the meeting, local government departments were asked to closely cooperate and improve the system to ensure food safety.Further, the participants agreed that authorities should publicize accurate information about food safety in a timely manner, and do more to forge a social atmosphere favorable for ensuring food safety.

BEIJING, Feb. 9 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Agriculture on Wednesday urged more measures be taken to minimize the impact of a drought due to the possibility that the winter drought may continue into spring.The country's winter wheat producing regions have suffered severe drought since October last year, and the possibility of spring drought is surfacing, Minister of Agriculture Han Changfu said in a statement posted on the ministry's website.Spring drought following the winter one will be a significant threat to summer grain production, he said.As of Wednesday, the drought had affected about 115.95 million mu (7.73 million hectares) of winter wheat in the country's eight key producing provinces, which account for 42.4 percent of the total winter wheat growing areas in the regions, the statement said.China's main wheat growing regions include the provinces of Shandong, Henan, Hubei, Anhui, Shanxi, Shaanxi, Gansu and Jiangsu.Han urged agricultural authorities to be "fully aware of the extreme significance" of a summer harvest this year and strengthen their efforts to assure a successful harvest.Summer grain and oil production is crucial to easing inflation pressures and stabilizing grain output for the entire year, he said. MOSCOW, April 22 (Xinhua) -- The Russian Space Forces has re-established contact with a military satellite, Geo-IK-2, which went missing in February, local media reported Friday.According to a spokesman from the Defense Ministry, Interfax news agency said the Space Forces had already received telemetric information from the satellite and collection and analysis of the data were currently underway.After studying the information, the Defense Ministry would make a decision regarding the further use of the satellite, the spokesman said.A Rokot light-class carrier rocket carrying with the Geo-IK-2 satellite blasted off Feb. 1 from Russia's Plesetsk launching site, but placed the satellite in an incorrect orbit. After the launch, the Defense Ministry announced it had lost contact with the Geo-IK-2 and later abandoned the satellite.The Russian Space Forces then grounded launches of all Rokot light-class carrier rockets until the completion of an investigation into the failed launch.
