 LA JOLLA, Calif. (KGTV) -- The work of Jonas Salk helped cure polio 63 years ago, when the polio vaccine was created. The vaccine changed countless lives, changing the nation. Salk's work pushed further though, helping to create the March of Dimes. An organization that continues to work with the Salk Insitute in La Jolla - so it's researchers can one day eradicate other diseases. 10News Anchor Steve Atkinson spoke with polio survivor Dennis Nutter about his experiences with the disease as a child in the 1940s. "I was five-years-old in 1948. I just remember being extremely tired. I couldn't get up and walk," Nutter said. "Finally, I was just bedridden. The town doctor just said, 'let's just take him to the hospital and with a spinal tap they said it was polio.'"Professor Martin Hetzer is the vice president and chief science officer of the Salk Institute. "The March of Dimes is called the March of Dimes because it was literally...many, very small contributions that allowed people like Jonas Salk to pursue their science," he said. "And in his case, it led to the eradication of and the elimination of polio."The discovery saved millions of lives. "There are so many things that they, children today, don't have to endure that my generation had to," Nutter said. "Great British Bake Off" finalist Luis Troyano has died after his battle with esophageal cancer. You’ve probably seen them on your social media feed – those crazy cheap flight deals, some as low as .99. Those deals often seem too good to be true, so what’s the catch? Skyler McKinley with AAA says airlines offer cheap flights for various reasons. It might to fill seats that aren’t booked, or it could be to compete with other airlines. “Airlines aren't going to be in the business in losing money,” said McKinley. “With them offering these very cheap seats, it's not because they love you so much, it’s because it’s in their economic interest to offer these reduce seats.”Despite why they do it, McKinley says these deals can be worth it for some fliers. If you are flexible, these deals are for you."Typically, you will see blackout dates like you can't fly surrounding Christmas. You can't fly on Friday. You can't fly on Saturday. You have to fly on Tuesday,” said McKinley. “All of those restrictions are in place because airlines are able to fill those high in demand flights on their own. You’re getting this deal because it's a less desirable leg.”Other restrictions might be on how many bags you’re allowed to take, and the baggage fee may be high to make up for the low-cost ticket.For example, we found a Spirit Airlines deal page that offers a one-way ticket for , but you had to forgo bags and you weren’t able to pick the seat of your liking.However, there are ways to use these offers to your advantage."If I bundle it, I get to do what we typically think when we book a flight,” McKinley. “I get to pick my seat, bring some luggage on and that adds per person per way. All the airlines have a deal page, so if you have a preferred airline, you can find a deal."These deals can be a little restrictive, but you can sign up for notifications for flight deals from your airport in case it fits your next trip.Ultimately, yes, these deals will save you money, but not as much as advertised. "Don't be disappointed when a deal that said , , , ends up being twice that or more by the time you enter in your credit card details and pay."Another way you can save and get better deals is by booking one-way tickets. When you book round-trip, typically bundling flights can cost more because you are limiting your flight route and airline. 2284

 Willie Mays once said that no one could hit a baseball further than Willie McCovey. That is high praise from the former MLB Home Run King. On Wednesday, McCovey died peacefully at his home at the age of 80, the San Francisco Giants announced. McCovey was the 11th player in MLB history to join the 500 Home Run Club, and the second member of the Giants to join the club following Mays. McCovey hit 521 home runs in his 21-year career, which ended in 1980. In 1986, McCovey was inducted to the Baseball Hall of Fame after being selected on his first ballot. "Baseball has lost a giant, in every sense of the word, with Willie McCovey's passing this afternoon," Hall of Fame President Jeff Idelson said in a statement. "There wasn't a batter more feared by opposing pitchers than Willie Mac, who hit 521 mammoth home runs during a dominating 22-year career that included 19 seasons in a Giants uniform." 945
