Florida Gov. Ron Desantis signed a bill into law Wednesday requiring school districts and charter schools to increase the minimum base salary for full-time classroom teachers to at least ,500.Previously, Florida was ranked 26th in the country for beginning teacher pay. Now, it's among the top five, DeSantis said."I think its definitely going to keep a lot of teachers in the profession and also motivates new ones to come into it," said Garrett Kent, a seventh-grade math teacher at Oak Hammock K-8 School in Port St. Lucie.Kent said the state's new benchmark for teacher pay is a dream come true."It's life-changing," said Kent. "I mean, most teachers don't join for the money, but this just adds to the motivation to help educate the students."State Rep. Toby Overdorf, R-Palm City, whose district covers Martin and St. Lucie counties, was one of several authors of the bill.He said the money is now in place for school districts to negotiate with teacher's unions."The reality is that this is laid out, not only as a benchmark, ,500, but also, it's great recognition and allowing those individual school districts to make a choice with their teachers as to what kind of raises they're going to be getting," said Overdorf.Overdorf said districts that already have a starting pay higher than ,500 will also likely see an increase and that the state of Florida is now in an excellent position to bring the best teachers back."Some of the best and brightest have gone to teach elsewhere because, frankly, they weren't able to get that living salary that recognizes the job that they do," said Overdorf. "Florida has now laid that down. We're going to be able to do that, and we're laying out those opportunities."Kent agreed."This will definitely change a lot of lives, especially the ones that are coming in," said Kent. For millions of college students, this election will be their first time being able to vote for the President of the United States. While some students have been waiting for this opportunity for years, historically, many others may not even end up casting a ballot. Two groups who are responsible for mobilizing first-time voters on college campuses are the College Democrats and College Republicans. Both are national organizations with chapters on most university campuses. COVID-19 CHALLENGESIn a normal election year, Democrat and Republican clubs on campuses like Arizona State University would host almost daily events in the run-up to the election. Pizza parties, free food and guest speakers all serve the purpose of getting first-time voters registered and excited to participate in the election. But on many campuses this year, in-person events are banned, or at the very least, restricted. "This semester is obviously presenting a challenge," said Clay Robinson, vice president of the College Republicans at ASU.Robinson said one major impact has been the inability to set up tables near busy parts of campus to attract new members. As a result, membership has been slightly off. "Usually we’d be having in-person events, we’d be offering free food," Robinson said. The College Democrats have also seen an impact, potentially problematic for Democrats in Arizona since college students tend to vote more progressive. "I don't come on campus at all," said Cameron Adams, president of the ASU Young Democrats.Adams says in addition to missing in-person events, she misses knocking on doors for candidates. "We are known as the powerhouse of knocking on doors, so it's really different to not be doing that, Adams said. "I miss it so much."HOW THEY'VE BEEN MOBILIZING Both Robinson and Adams say they've been holding virtual meet-ups on Zoom, and the response has actually been better than expected. "I've actually been surprised how many people we’ve been able to keep coming to meetings," Robinson said. Adams says speakers have also been willing to participate remotely, which gives the group reasons to come together. "We’ve been having debate watch parties," Adams added. Arnold Schwarzenegger took another jab at President Donald Trump on Thursday, following news that the administration plans to revoke a signature Obama-era environmental regulation."For 48 years -- since one of my heroes, then-Gov. "If the President thinks he can win this fight, he's out of his mind."The Trump administration wants to freeze a rule mandating that automakers work to make cars substantially more fuel efficient.
