At least one person is injured after a man opened fire at a hospital in Shreveport, Louisiana Wednesday morning, according to reports. The man was shot in the leg and is expected to be OK.Around 6:30 a.m. ET, officers got called to Ochsner LSU Health Shreveport - St. Mary Medical Center for reports of a shooting.Officers treated it like an active shooter situation and local media in the area said hostage negotiators were on the scene. The hospital was closed to new arrivals for a time Wednesday morning. At least 285 U.S. children have developed a serious inflammatory condition linked to the coronavirus and while most recovered, the potential for long-term or permanent damage is unknown, two new studies suggest.The papers, published online Monday in the New England Journal of Medicine, provide the fullest report yet on the condition.The condition is known as multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children. It is considered uncommon and deaths are rare; six children died among the 285 in the new studies.Including cases in Europe, where it was first reported, about 1,000 children worldwide have been affected, a journal editorial said.The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s case definition includes current or recent COVID-19 infection or exposure to the virus; a fever of at least 100.4 for at least 24 hours; severe illness requiring hospitalization; inflammatory markers in blood tests, and evidence of problems affecting at least two organs that could include the heart, kidneys, lungs, skin or other nervous system.Digestive symptoms including nausea and diarrhea are common. Some children may have symptoms resembling Kawasaki disease, a rare condition in children that can cause swelling and heart problems.At least 35 states have had cases, and they seem to crop up a few weeks after local COVID-19 activity peaks, said Dr. Adrienne Randolph of Boston Children’s Hospital. She is a lead researcher for a multistate study that includes CDC scientists. The second paper involved 99 children in New York state, where the first U.S. cases occurred.Combined, the papers show 285 cases from March thru mid to late May but Randolph said additional U.S. children have been diagnosed in June.Most had current or recent COVID-19 infections but had previously been healthy.About 80% of children in the multistate study had heart-related problems, which included coronary aneurysms — a bulge in a heart artery that can be fatal.“Those need to be followed up,” Randolph said. “This is a life-threatening concern for a lot of patients.”Most affected children had no other health condition but about 30% were obese. The condition also appears to disproportionately affect Latino and Black children and boys.The average age was 8 years old. As the number of COVID-19 cases rapidly increases, you might feel more apprehensive about eating out now.So WFTS took your questions straight to a former health inspector, who believes certain food safety protocols should be followed when you're dining out."I think everyone should be wearing a mask if they're in public," said Danielle Egger, who started her own restaurant consultation company called Florida Food Safety Systems, after being a health inspector for many years.She says since restaurant inspections are public, you should look up past inspections here to see how the restaurant performed before the pandemic hit."If the restaurant has had concerns about sanitation in the past before COVID started, it might be a good idea to consider going elsewhere. And if sanitation issues, handwashing, and cleanliness were an issue before this ever started, chances are they're struggling to get up to compliance now," she explained.When you walk into a restaurant, Egger says employees should be constantly cleaning, especially highly-touched areas."I have been advising them to set timers so that every 30 minutes, they're wiping down high touched areas. That's going to be any of the door handles, any of the points of sale systems that they're using to complete transactions," she said.And that includes stylists, pens, and even credit card machines because the virus can live on surfaces."There are some studies that say that COVID-19 is possibly able to survive on a surface like plastic for about three days so it's definitely possible," Egger said.But can the virus live on food?"It appears as though coronavirus and COVID is actually heat sensitive, which means that most of the time, those temperatures we're cooking those food items too is able to cook off any kind of the virus," she explained.And you may have heard that eating outside is safer than inside. So why is that?"I believe there were three reported cases of people consuming food in restaurants in an enclosed area and they actually did find the virus in the air conditioning system," she said.And masks are a must right now."Anybody that's facing our customers should be wearing masks, that includes general managers. That includes anybody who's out on the floor, interacting with customers or employees," she said.And the biggest mistake people make when wearing a mask? They don't cover their nose."You're still running the risk of inhaling that potentially contaminated air. So we have to keep everything covered," she explained.Egger also recommends restaurants display on their door what they're doing to keep you safe and what they expect of their customers.That may include things like 'masks required', 'please social distance' or 'think about take-out if you're not feeling well.'''Egger says disposable menus are the safest but if a restaurant hands you a reusable menu, they should be sanitizing that menu between each customer.WFTS' Wendy Ryan first reported this story. 2971

  

As wildfires rage in California, emotions are heating up.“People are not getting along,” said Boulder Creek, California, local Alex.In the Santa Cruz mountains, people are stocking up on gas but running out of patience.“The whole valley was closed,” Alex said. “Closed man!”At the local grocery store, workers are counting every single cent after being shut down for two weeks due to fire concerns.“We definitely have stocked up on our gallon waters,” said Vanessa Russo, owner of Wild Roots Market in Boulder Creek.Russo says wildfires during the pandemic have drastically cut into profits and are now weighing on people’s wallets and their well-being.“A lot of our customers are having to deal with refrigeration issues and slowly having evacuations be lifted,” she said.With thousands of homes destroyed during these fires and many businesses already suffering due to COVID-19 concerns, rebuilding could come at a cost never seen before.“The 2020 fire could be even more catastrophic than say the 2018, which was I think was billion,” said Janet Ruiz with the Insurance Information Institute.Ruiz says the California fires could impact areas across the country.“Agriculture, you talk about the wine industry,” she said. “Beef, the pork, all those could be affected by catastrophe.”The economic impacts of these fires stretch from the mountains, all the way to the ocean“So, the time when our businesses need funding from us, we don’t have it to give,” said Bonnie Lipsco-mb, director of economic development for the City of Santa Cruz.Fire displaced Lipscomb’s family and they’re now living in a trailer.”Despite the new digs, Lipscomb is still focused on helping her community during these unprecedented times.“The impact is really catastrophic,” she said. “I don’t think we’ve seen this since the earthquake and maybe not even then.”With much of the city’s budget funded through sales and property taxes, areas of income that were already suffering before the fires, city leaders are now seeking support from state and federal government agencies.“We’re working on long-term recovery, but at the same time, it's day by day,” Lipscomb said.That road to economic recovery, however, will be long and costly. 2221
