Now, the future of the biggest shopping discount day of the year is unknown.Yes, it will still happenFor many, shopping on the day after Thanksgiving is a tradition. Historically, it’s also one of the best days of the year to save money on big-ticket items like electronics and appliances.But with social distancing the norm, it’s hard to imagine shoppers camping out on the sidewalk next to one another this year ahead of Nov. 27. It’s even more difficult to picture stores overflowing with excited shoppers.Retail experts believe Black Friday will still happen in 2020, despite the pandemic. But there’s no disputing the fact that it won’t be a traditional experience.“Being there at the crack of dawn, waiting in lines, the hustle and bustle in the store — that’s probably not going to exist,” says Jane Boyd Thomas, a professor of marketing at Winthrop University in South Carolina who has done research about Black Friday.Sales will shift further onlineFor years, Black Friday has shifted to online channels, merging with Cyber Monday into a weekend-long event. The pandemic is set to further cement that transition.After months of shelter-in-place orders, consumers have become more comfortable shopping from home. That will likely lead to an increase in online Black Friday purchases this year, says Dora Bock, associate professor of marketing at the Harbert College of Business at Auburn University in Alabama.But the changes could go a step beyond that. COVID-19 has illuminated failings in the supply chain, and Thomas believes many consumers will opt for contactless curbside pickup options (as opposed to shipping to their home) to guarantee that the items they’re buying online are actually available — and not out of stock.Still, that doesn’t necessarily mean stores will be ghost towns.“They want something normal,” Thomas says of some shoppers. “I do think that will drive people to go in to see the lights, to see the trees — all the stuff that goes with that experience.”Doorbusters could be deepEven though the experience will look different, Black Friday discounts might be particularly relevant this year, especially as millions of Americans have faced unemployment and other financial hardships in 2020.While consumers have largely focused on purchasing essential items during the pandemic, Bock anticipates competitive prices on discretionary products like apparel and jewelry.Consumers might also have an appetite for traditional Black Friday categories, such as computers. Thomas expects these discounts will be appealing, considering how critical laptops have become as Americans work, learn and interact virtually from home.“There’s a large number of consumers that look forward to Black Friday because it provides them a sense of excitement,” Bock says. “People feel good when they get a good deal.”Retailers still have some planning to doThere are a number of unanswered questions about how Black Friday will look. After all, retailers are still figuring out how to market the holiday shopping season.One possibility? Black Friday may become an extended period, rather than a single day of sales, says Michael Brown, a partner in the consumer practice of Kearney, a global strategy and management consultant.“I’m expecting that Black Friday as we have grown to know it cannot exist in a COVID world,” Brown says.“I think we have to really not think about Black Friday and think more about when the launch of the holiday season will begin. I think that has to be pulled up by retailers as early as November 1,” he says.Throughout the holiday season, stores will have to perform a delicate dance. During a phone interview with Fox Business on Thursday morning — his first TV interview since contracting COVID-19 — President Donald Trump said that while he hasn't been tested for the virus recently, his health is continuing to improve."I'm essentially very clean," Trump told Fox Business anchor Maria Bartiromo.Trump added that he would be tested again for the virus "very soon" to determine if he's still infected.The President also added that he doesn't "feel" like he could spread the virus to others."No, I don't think I'm contagious. I don't think I'm contagious at all," Trump said.According to the CDC, people infected with COVID-19 can still spread the virus, even if they are asymptomatic. The virus is typically active in humans for about two weeks, though it can last longer.The White House has refused to report when Trump last tested negative for the virus, but Trump announced his positive test on Friday, meaning he may be contagious for about another week.White House chief of staff Mark Meadows said on Wednesday that Trump would like to begin working from the Oval Office and that White House staff would implement safety precautions to make that happen. The CDC recommends those who are infected with the virus remain quarantined.Trump also falsely said Thursday that he's now "immune" to COVID-19."Remember, when you catch it, you get better, and then you're immune, you know?" Trump said. "As soon as everything goes away for me, you're immune."There are several documented cases where people who had previously contracted COVID-19 caught it again — though they suffered less severe symptoms. The CDC says that estimates indicate that COVID-19 antibodies make a person immune for about three months.During his Thursday interview, Trump said he assumed earlier this year that he might catch the virus at some point."But I did look at the numbers say I'll probably catch it, and I'll get better," Trump said. "And that's what happened."Despite the risks, Trump said he needed to continue to face the public because he had to be a "leader." As an example, he said he continued to meet with the families of soldiers who had been killed in action, even though social distancing was not always observed at those ceremonies."They're telling me these stories, and I can't say, 'Back up, stand 10 feet.' I just can't do it. I went through like 35 people and everyone had a different story," Trump said. "They come within an inch of my face sometimes, they want to hug me and they want to kiss me. And they do. I'm not telling them to back up."Trump said Thursday that he believed he contracted the virus at a September ceremony at the White House where he nominated Judge Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court."As far as the White House is concerned, somebody got it in — it was a day of celebration with Notre Dame, etc. etc. Somebody got in and people got infected, whether it was there or something else.," Trump said.Finally, Trump touted the COVID-19 therapeutic drugs he took while in the hospital, falsely calling them "cures." Regneron formally requested EUA for the drug on Wednesday.Regeneron says it has approximately 50,000 doses of the drug on hand, but could have up to 300,000 doses "within the next few monts," according to CNBC.While the drug has been effective in treating COVID-19, there is no "cure" for the virus. Disney has narrowed down the opening dates for their Stars Wars expansions that are being built at both Disneyland and Disney World.The company announced on their Disney Parks blog that Star Wars Galaxy's Edge will open at Disneyland in summer of 2019. The expansion will open at Disney World in late fall 2019.The exact dates for the opening of both parks will be announced at a later date. They come just a few months before the yet to be named Star Wars Episode 9 is due in theaters on December 20, 2019.At Disneyland the massive expansion is being built north of Frontierland. At Disney World is being built at Disney's Hollywood Studios.The Disney World expansion is also being accompanied by a Star Wars themed hotel.
