SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A mom shopping with her one-year-son leapt into action when she found a car burglar inside her SUV in University City.On Wednesday morning at the Vons on Governor Drive, Gloria spent about 15 minutes shopping inside. Her son was sitting in the cart. As soon as she pushed the loaded cart out of the store, her eyes zeroed in on her SUV, parked close to the store."I was kind of in disbelief. Someone was in the car and the passenger door was wide open," said Gloria.Gloria saw a man rummaging through her center console and started screaming. She pushed every button on her key fob."The panic alarm actually went off. Scared the living daylights out of him, and he took off running," said Gloria. Moments after, she found her phone in her purse and starting recording. Surveillance video shows her take off in his direction. Holding tightly to her son, she continued to scream. Still pushing the cart, she followed him. "Definitely adrenaline and pure anger," said Gloria.Gloria has been a victim of three car burglaries in the past five years."I'm going to get you this time. You're not going to do this to anybody else," Gloria kept thinking. Less than a minute later, she followed him across the parking lot to a U-Haul truck before he drove off. She got a photo of him and the license plate. Possibly realizing Gloria got video, the guy ditched the truck, which was recovered hours later. She says police told her it was loaded with stuff: some of her belongings and other items, likely stolen. Police say the license plate led them to a local address, but the man wasn't there. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A man wielding a metal chain was shot and killed by a two-year veteran of the San Diego Police Department this week, the department announced Saturday.SDPD said 48-year-old Vaugh Harrison Denham, of San Diego, was shot and killed by Officer Corey Pitts after Denham refused to obey officers' orders to drop a machete he had reportedly used to attack someone Wednesday.Police said they arrived at a violent disturbance call involving a "machete-style" weapon in the 4000 block of Boston Ave. just after 5 p.m. Police found a 57-year-old victim with injuries that suggested he'd been attacked with an "edged weapon."ORIGINAL STORY: Police investigating fatal officer-involved shooting in SouthcrestThe victim was taken to a nearby hospital with non-life threatening injuries.At the scene, police tried to contact Denham around the corner from the initial scene. He was uncooperative with officers, police said, and a Taser was deployed after the confrontation escalated.Witness statements indicated Denham approached officers with a metal chain and refused verbal commands to stop by officers. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Carlos family is hoping surveillance video will help track down the man recorded making himself comfortable in their home.Along Wallsey Drive, the Meduna family got a heart-sinking scare the day before Halloween.Around 8:30 a.m, Megan Meduna and her husband both got a notification that their garage door was open.  Inside the home, a camera was recording an intruder. Meduna says the man had pried open a window screen in the front and forced open a window.  A sound heard in the video is the burglar opening the door to the garage, before he's seen shutting the window he just climbed through. As he puts on his gloves, he walks up to the camera and flips it over."It's just creepy, creepy to see someone in my house sneaking around," said Meduna.By the time police arrived, the man was gone. He got away with only a little bit of cash, but the impact was felt across a neighborhood.  Surveillance video showed him casing the area.  Minutes before the break-in, a neighbor reported seeing the man knocking at her door, then pretending to need directions when she answered the door.  At another home, a ripped screen was found near a side window and an out-of-place brick was discovered outside another window.Neighbors are now wondering if the same man could be linked to other burglaries. A few weeks ago and blocks away, 10News reported on a break-in with a similar MO that left a newlywed couple missing wedding gifts and family heirlooms.  A month ago, there was a another burglary at Meduna's home, in which electronics and jewelry were taken."Feel violated and angry. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A little more than a year in, homeless people using the new storage lockers in Sherman Heights are still having trouble finding homes.According to new numbers released by the San Diego Housing Commission, 895 people have used the storage lockers since they opened last June. But only 9%, 79 of them have been able to find longer-term or permanent housing.Lisa Jones, the Senior Vice President of Homeless Housing Innovations for the SD Housing Commission, admits that number is low. But she says people should not look at it as a condemnation of the project. She says the locker facility isn't designed to help people find housing, but to direct them to resources that can."If this were a shelter program, that's a number we'd expect to be higher," Jones says. "But we see it as a positive number, considering the fact that we don't actually have case management services on that site."However, the storage facility seems to be struggling to connect homeless people with those resources. According to the same study, only 22% of the people using the shelters are currently working with a case manager or social service provider. Of those, only 45.5% met with a case manager in the last week before the survey.But, Jones says the storage site still serves as a critical gateway for homeless people to get help."It's an engagement opportunity that's unique because they're building relationships with the folks as they come in," she says. "They can help reorient them and get them reconnected to services if they're not. And if they are in services, they can make sure they're accessing them to the best effect."Jones also says the new numbers show that neighbors fears of the facility bringing more homeless people to the area are unfounded. An average of 120 people visit the site each day, but they rarely stay in the Sherman Heights area.Before the storage facility opened, 12.5% of the people who answered the survey said they slept in Sherman Heights or Logan Heights. That number has since dropped to 10%. She says that's particularly encouraging because 73% of the facility's users say they are chronically homeless."When you get into that chronic homelessness, your challenges get greater," says Jones. "To some degree, you get disenfranchised or frustrated with the experience. It's the kind of thing where the longer you're homeless, the more challenging that life back into housing can become."Jones also says the lockers have allowed more homeless people to be able to work and go to school. Because of the lockers, they don't have to bring their belongings with them everywhere they go or worry about them being stolen overnight."We have people in these programs that are employed, that are bringing in work boots and tools at night because they don't want to store them on the street," says Jones. "We have people that use the programs that are in school, and they keep books and laptops and things like that in there."There's a value to the safety and security that you can't see in numbers." 3361

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego financial expert in San Diego has a message for women looking for success: a man is not a financial plan.Most women would rather talk with the grandmothers about their love lives than talk about financial planning, according to an investment survey done by Oppenheimer Funds.CPA Ginita Wall has a clear message.“Every marriage ends in either divorce or widowhood and 70 percent of the time it’s the woman who’s left alone,” said Wall. “Then thinking that magically, someday, I’ll start saving for retirement, someday I’ll be able to buy a house; living in the someday and not really planning for it today.”Wall moved her CPA practice to San Diego 31 years ago. She realized there was a need.“Women were out in the marketplace, but they weren't managing the money, and sadly, often nobody was.”Wall and financial planner Candace Bahr launched the Women’s Institute for Financial Education (WIFE), a nonprofit to give women the tools to start making a difference.“We didn't have anything to sell anybody. Our whole goal was and continues to be ‘our goal is education,’” said Bahr.Wall and Bahr established Second Saturday, a monthly workshop to teach women what they need to know during divorce. Each session brings in an attorney for matters of the court. Wall gives financial advice, a counselor helps with family issues, and a mediator can settle the differences. The experts volunteer their time.“It’s a decision for many people that may be the largest financial decision of their life, and if you're going through it uninformed or too emotional, it's going to be difficult to make the right choices.”Wall says love and money go together, but so do arguments.“if you loved me more, you wouldn't be spending this money, spending more on me, or you would understand how I feel.” Wall advises couples to talk about what’s important to them, make goals, create a concrete plan and monitor it.“So we want women to be partners in a relationship, not dependents,” said Bahr.Wall and Bahr’s money message has gone national. Second Saturday is now in 115 other locations around the country, and there are plans to be in 500 cities soon.“It's amazing because we didn't set out to do this for 31 years.
