CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. (KGTV) — A large plume of smoke could be seen over Camp Pendleton on Wednesday, as fire crews battled the De Luz Fire.The fire was reported just before 1:30 p.m. on the west side of De Luz Road, according to Camp Pendleton officials. It wasn't clear how large the fire was at the time, but officials say there was a threat to structures and precautionary evacuations were taking place for De Luz Housing and surrounding buildings, including the CDC, school, and NCIS locations. CAMPO, Calif. (KGTV) -- Three people were taken to the hospital and two others are in custody after a Border Patrol chase led to a crash in Campo Tuesday night. According to Border Patrol, agents tried to stop a 23-year-old San Diego resident driving a blue Mazda MPV around 5:05 p.m. near Old Highway 80 and McCain Valley Road for possible immigration-related violations. The driver refused to stop, sparking the chase. During the chase, agents say the woman drove onto Shasta Way at a “high rate of speed” before driving over a dip and losing control of the vehicle. According to border patrol, the 23-year-old had minor injuries and was taken to the hospital. Border Patrol says four men were found in the back of the vehicle. The men are between the ages of 24 and 39 and all claim to be residents of Mexico. Two of the men were taken to the hospital for treatment while the other two were taken into custody after refusing medical aid, Border Patrol says. 1139

CARLSBAD, Calif. (KGTV) - After a woman died in a jet ski crash in the Agua Hedionda Lagoon in Carlsbad on Sunday, Stephen and Aimee Cochrane were confronted with a painful memory.“I just cannot believe that this would have happened. It’s just wrong,” said Aimee.Her indignation was amplified by the fact that she and her husband were involved in a crash in the same lagoon in July of 2016.They had decided to rent a jet ski on their anniversary, something they had never done before.“We wanted to do something different,” recalled Stephen.But when they got to California Watersports at the Agua Hedionda Lagoon, they had second thoughts.“It was wild. It was mayhem out there,” said Stephen, describing the busy activity on the water.Despite their hesitations, they decided to go for it. But before they had even completed one lap around the buoys, they said they were t-boned by another rider.“We both flew off the jet ski,” remembers Aimee.Stephen said he momentarily blacked out. Aimee remembers swimming over to him and seeing him face down in the water.He was eventually pulled onto a boat and taken into an ambulance. He said he ended up with three broken ribs and a fractured sternum.Aimee suffered some cuts and bruises on her legs, but no broken bones.Stephen said he had to take three weeks off of work and pay ,000 in out of pocket medical expenses. He says he still has pain in his chest from the injury.After the crash, they said they had no contact with the owners of the rental company. They said they were unaware if the company had made any changes to prevent future crashes.10News spoke to an employee at California Waterspouts who said they would not be providing any statements. (KGTV) — Twenty-eight local Marine and Navy veterans of World War II were honored during a sunset ceremony Saturday.Camp Pendleton honored the veterans with a 21-gun salute, bell tolling, and wreath laying ceremony as part of the 75th commemoration of the Battle of Iwo Jima.This annual event is one of the largest Iwo Jima reunions in the U.S. as the number of surviving World War II veterans begins to dwindle."It's just amazingly remarkable marines who've truly established the legacy of the marine corps on whose shoulders we stand as we continue to protect the freedoms of the nation," Lt. Gen. Joseph Osterman, commanding general of the First Marine Expeditionary Force, said.Tens of thousands of U.S. troops fought Japanese soldiers during the island invasion from Feb. 19, 1945 to March 26, 1945.
