It's a growing problem for people nationwide: rising student loan debt. Now, members of Congress are expected to take action. Lawmakers are introducing legislation to eliminate that debt for millions of Americans. That decision would greatly impact people like Cheryl Medina. At the age of 63, Medina wants to focus on planning for her retirement. Instead, she worries about paying her bills, especially her student loans, which she says have gotten bigger despite her paying 0 a month. “It's ,000. After getting divorced 20 years ago, Medina went back to school, hoping a college degree would improve her job prospects. Now, she thinks she'll have to delay her retirement and work longer because of this debt, which at this point, Medina admits, she'll probably take to the grave with her. “To be able to afford the payments, it's not going to be paid off when I pass away,” she says. While most people think student loan debt is a young person's problem, more than 3 million people over 60 are paying off college loans. In the coming weeks, Senator Elizabeth Warren and Representative James Clyburn will introduce legislation to eliminate up to ,000 in student loan debt for 42 million Americans. They claim this will provide relief to 95 percent of borrowers and would wipe out debt entirely for 75 percent of borrowers. “It's virtually impossible for a young person to find a high-quality education as an affordable price,” Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Massachusetts) says. “We're crushing an entire generation with student loan debt.” Warren says the proposed plan would be paid for by a 2-percent yearly tax on the richest 75,000 families in the country, who have at least million in net worth. 1826

Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul has introduced a bill to ban no-knock warrants nationwide in the wake of Breonna Taylor's shooting death in Louisville.The "Justice for Breonna Taylor" Act bans federal law enforcement officers from forcing themselves into someone's home without announcing their authority or purpose. Taylor, a 26-year-old EMT from Louisville, was killed during a police raid on her home back in March, which was conducted under the authority of a no-knock warrant. It would also require the same of any state or local law enforcement agency that receives funds from the Department of Justice."After talking with Breonna Taylor's family, I've come to the conclusion that it's long past time to get rid of no-knock warrants," said Sen. Paul in a statement. "This bill will effectively end no-knock raids in the United States."The City of Louisville has since banned the use of no-knock warrants after Taylor's death and named the new ordinance after her. The Louisville Metro Council unanimously voted Thursday night to ban the controversial warrants after days of protests and calls for reform.According to NPR, the law requires police to wear body cameras when serving warrants and turn them on five minutes before entering a person's home. PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Around the world there are more than 100 safe injection sites, in countries like Canada, Australia and Spain. However, in the U.S. there are none. “In 2017, 1,217 Philadelphians died of overdoses. Last year about 1,150,” said Philadelphia’s former mayor, and the state’s former governor, Ed Rendell. Rendell has been leading a fighting for Philadelphia to open the first safe injection site in the country. He joined the organization Safehouse in this effort shortly after his best friend’s son overdosed on heroin. “When John Decker died, it became personal,” added Rendell. “Decker wasn’t my son, but I knew him since he was a 2-year-old boy.”Safe injection sites provide a place for users to inject drugs under medical supervision. The proposal has landed Rendell and supporters of the plan against the federal government. The Department of Justice sued Safehouse last year to block the site but then earlier this month this call happened. “It’s kind of a nuance. He just said it’s not unlawful activity,” said a board member of Safehouse who was on speaker phone in Rendell’s office. The call described a judge’s decision minutes earlier. The federal judge denied the Trump administration’s motion to block Safehouse from opening a safe injection site under the federal Crack House Statue. “It is clearly a victory,” said Rendell during the call. A victory against the D.O.J for now, but Rendell and Safehouse still have to win over the public. There’s a lot the criticism around the idea of a safe injection sites, some argue one in the U.S. would be promoting the use of opioid drugs rather than curbing it. “Ridiculous! No one is going to get hooked on opioids because they think of themselves well if I get her back and always inject in front of a medical personnel,” Rendell responds. However, many in the community of Kensington, where the safe injection site would be located, add additional concerns. Some neighbors fear a site would bring addicts from all over the city to a neighborhood already struggling and possibly take that neighborhood to a new low. “If you have time I’d say go out to Kensington and look at what’s there right now couldn’t get any worse,” argues Rendell. “My message to the neighbors is that we are going to bring it all indoors no one is going to be shooting up in front of your kid
