Tesla is disputing claims by a California man that all three models of the company’s cars can suddenly speed up on their own without the driver touching the accelerator pedal.Tesla said Monday it checks when drivers report that their car accelerated on its own, and in every case where the company has the car’s data, it drove as designed. The company also claimed the man who filed a petition with federal safety officials is a short-seller of Tesla shares, referring to investors who borrow shares in a company’s stock and try to profit by replacing them after the share price falls. On Friday, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said it would look into a petition filed by Brian Sparks of Berkeley, California, and decide whether to open a formal investigation. Sparks’ allegations cover about 500,000 Teslas, including Model 3, Model S and Model X vehicles in model years 2013 through 2019.Sparks said Tesla owners have lodged 127 complaints with the government, covering 110 crashes and 52 injuries.Tesla, which did not respond when asked for comment on Friday, posted a statement Monday saying its electric vehicles do not accelerate on their own.The company called the petition “completely false,” adding that “the car accelerates if, and only if, the driver told it to do so, and it slows or stops when the driver applies the brake.”Sparks said in his 69-page petition that many of the Tesla accidents happened during parking, that the complaint rate was much higher than for other vehicles, and that Tesla refused to share the car’s data with owners after incidents. The highway agency has yet to verify the complaints. The people who filed complaints were not identified in NHTSA’s database. 1726

The Office of Refugee Resettlement, which is charged with caring for unaccompanied migrant children, is "scaling back" or canceling activities at shelters, citing the need for more resources.A swell of migrants crossing the southern border has overwhelmed the agency's facilities, which house unaccompanied children until they are placed with a sponsor in the United States. The shelters provide schooling and activities for the children during their stay, but the increase of children arriving to the border has strained the department's resources."This week, ORR instructed grantees to begin scaling back or discontinuing awards for (unaccompanied minors) activities that are not directly necessary for the protection of life and safety, including education services, legal services, and recreation," Evelyn Stauffer, spokeswoman for the Department of Health and Human Services' Administration for Children and Families, said in a statement. The Washington Post 975

The House voted Thursday to limit President Donald Trump's ability to take military action against Iran as Democratic criticism of the U.S. killing of a top Iranian general intensified. The resolution does not require the President's signature to be enacted, and Republicans claim the resolution does not have the force of law. Democrats say that under the 1973 War Powers Act, it would be binding if also approved by the Senate. The matter has not been definitively decided by federal courts. A similar proposal by Sen. Tim Kaine, D-Va., faces an uphill fight in the GOP-run Senate.Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., said during her weekly press conference that the strike that killed Gen. Qassem Soleimani was "provocative and disproportionate." The House vote came after two U.S. officials, speaking on the condition of anonymity, told reporters that it is "highly likely" that Iran is 898

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued a warning to foodservice providers Wednesday to not use hard-boiled eggs produced by a Georgia company due to an outbreak of Listeria. The CDC says hard-boiled eggs produced by Almark Foods in Gainesville, Georgia is the cause of a Listeria outbreak that has killed one and sickened seven people in five states. The agency warned that consumers ordering foods that are made with hard-boiled eggs, like egg salad or deviled eggs, should ask the provider where they buy their hard-boiled eggs. The CDC advises that consumers not purchase those products if the provider uses Almark eggs or the provider does not know from where the eggs come. The CDC clarified that the Listeria outbreak was only limited to mass-produced eggs provided to food service providers, and the warning does not include Almark hard-boiled eggs that were sold directly in stores or other hard-boiled eggs sold in stores and restaurants.Symptoms of listeria incluide headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, and convulsions in addition to fever and muscle aches. Symptoms can present themselves between one and four weeks after consuming food tainted with the bacteria. People on dialysis, people with cancer and pregnant women are more likely to contract the disease than others. 1324
