[Reuters]Stronger-than-expected economic figures have prompted a number of international economic research institutions to revise upwards their forecasts for China's gross domestic product (GDP) growth. Almost all the major economic indexes in the first two months of this year have exceeded those for the same period last year. "The country's GDP growth in the first quarter will be faster than in the equivalent period last year and also that of the previous quarter," Chen Dongqi, deputy director of the Institute of Economic Research of the National Development and Reform Commission, said. The State Information Center has adjusted its GDP growth forecast for the first quarter from 10.2 percent to about 11 percent. Despite the government last year adopting a number of tightening measures, economic growth has shown clear signs of rebounding in the past quarter. Statistics show that urban fixed-asset investment picked up moderately to 23.4 percent year-on-year in January-February, and from about 20 percent in the fourth quarter of last year, reversing the trend of a gradual slowdown since last July. Meanwhile, the trade surplus registered a massive leap of 230 percent, and retail sales were up 14.7 percent on the first two months of last year. "Industrial growth is a key driving force behind overall economic growth, and power generation is also a useful indicator," Chen said. According to the National Bureau of Statistics, China's industrial output rose 18.5 percent year-on-year while industrial profits soared 43.8 percent in the first two months. Growth in power generation also accelerated to 16.6 percent year-on-year from less than 14 percent in the same period last year. Despite expectations the government will introduce another round of tightening measures soon, global investment bank, Lehman Brothers, still revised up its forecast for the Chinese economy. According to a recent report by the firm, the first quarter growth forecast has been raised from 9.8 percent to 10.1 percent, and the annual growth rate from 9.6 percent to 9.8 percent. "In the light of the stronger-than-expected figures in the first two months of this year and the likely policy responses, we have lifted our full-year growth projections for this year to 10 percent from 9.1 percent, based mainly on stronger growth in credit, investment and exports," Qu Hongbin, the chief China economist with HSBC, said. Domestic banks extended new loans of 982 billion yuan (7 billion) in the first two months of this year compared with 716 billion yuan ( billion) in the same period of 2006. The government forecast early last month that the country's GDP is to grow by about 8 percent this year. The country has just witnessed four consecutive years of double-digit growth, including 10.7 percent GDP growth last year, the fastest in a decade. SHANGHAI: The children of migrant workers in Shanghai are turning against their hometowns and becoming arrogant, it has been claimed.Kids brought up in Shanghai have a feeling of superiority when they return to their birthplaces, Zhang Yichao, the founder of a chorus group who has been organizing trips for the young migrants to the countryside, said.The 35 chorus group members are aged from 11 to 16, born in rural areas and are growing up in Shanghai. They were making 12-day trips to their hometowns of Anhui, Jiangxi and Jiangsu provinces last month.Zhang set up the chorus in February last year with an American. It is the first troupe in Shanghai comprising the children of migrant workers.Following an 18-month training course by voluntary teachers they put on performances at venues such as the Shanghai Oriental Art Center and Jinmao Tower, China's second-highest building.On their visits to the countryside the kids held chorus and solo shows, with electric instruments, for the farmers. They also played games with local children and collated information to write reports."Few of these children maintain their affection for their hometowns and they don't like the countryside. I hope these trips will help them remember their early childhood and the rural areas where they were born," Zhang said.For the first few days, he said, the kids kept their distance from farmers, complained about dirty toilets, muddy sidewalks and shabby housing. They even hid the fact they were from rural areas themselves."It's obvious these children liked the feeling of superiority in front of their country fellows," Zhang said."What we can do, however, is help them face up to the fact they were born in rural areas and perhaps then they will be more fond of these places."They are still young and innocent and I believe they will build up a positive life philosophy and make their own contributions to society," chorus volunteer Liu Jing said."Children of migrant workers need more education in all aspects of life. GENEVA -- China on Tuesday got its first judge on the  World Trade Organization (WTO)'s highest court, six years after the country joined the Geneva-based body.Zhang YuejiaoChinese lawyer Zhang Yuejiao was formally appointed by the WTO Dispute Settlement Body (DSB) as a member of the seven-person Appellate Body, which issues final rulings in trade disputes, WTO sources said.Jennifer Hillman of the United States, Lilia Bautista of the Philippines and Shotaro Oshima of Japan were also appointed as new members of the top court at a DSB meeting on Tuesday.The appointments were made according to the Dispute Settlement Understanding which stipulates that the Appellate Body shall " comprise persons of recognized authority, with demonstrated expertise in law, international trade and the subject matter of the WTO agreements generally," a WTO statement said.The WTO said Hillman and Bautista would formally join the top court next month, while Zhang and Oshima would join in June. They can serve up to two four-year terms.Zhang, 63, is professor of law at Shantou University in China. She is also an arbitrator on China's International Trade and Economic Arbitration Commission and practises law as a private attorney.Zhang once held positions at the Chinese Ministry of Commerce as well as at the Asian Development Bank.

NANJING - The legislature of the eastern province of  Jiangsu has amended the law to clearly define sexual harassment and allow complainants to sue.The Standing Committee of the Jiangsu Provincial People's Congress on Thursday passed the revised Jiangsu Provincial Measures for Implementing China's Law on Protection of Women's Rights, saying "sexual harassment of women in the form of spoken and written language, images, electronic information and bodily gestures is prohibited." The measures allow those who claim that they have been harassed to report such cases to employers, authorities and the police, which must prevent or stop such behavior. Women can also sue those they contend harassed them.Although sexual harassment was included in an amendment of the national law in 2005, the legislation didn't clearly define harassment, which made it difficult to prove in court, said Wang Lasheng, vice chairman of the Legal Affairs Committee of the Jiangsu Provincial People's Congress."A clear definition of the forms of sexual harassment will definitely help law enforcement and improve victims' awareness of self-protection," said Wang.Defining sexual harassment at the local level was a welcome attempt to supplement the national law, said Wang, adding that similar statutes have been passed in Shanghai, Zhejiang, Jiangxi, Shaanxi and Anhui provinces and Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region. These laws allow complainants to file claims or sue.

XINTAI, Shandong -- Fifty million yuan (US.6 million) has been donated for miners from the two flooded collieries and their families in east China's Shandong Province by Sunday noon, according to local sources.The money shall be used for rescue work, consolation for relatives of the trapped miners, and subsidy for other miners as operation of the mines is suspended.Among the donators, the China National Coal Group Corp. was the first to offer a large amount -- one million yuan (US1,578.9). Gao had been trapped in a flooded coal mine 58 years ago and was rescued with 30 fellows.A garbage collector Li Quan who lives in the Huanyuan residential quarter donated 200 yuan.
