Thousands more people are one paycheck away from becoming homeless.As a county, San Diego has the fourth-largest homeless population in the United States. To help, we've created this resource guide to help those in need for assistance.WHERE TO START Dial 211: You can reach a free, confidential hotline for help with multiple services. Representatives are on hand 24 hours a day to answer all questions. Last year, the hotline received more than 500,000 calls, about a fourth of which dealt with housing concerns. The same services are provided online. Learn more FOR HOUSING City of San Diego: Anyone in need of a bed in one of the city’s four emergency shelters and three bridge shelters will be placed through an assessment, with space going to the “most vulnerable people first”, the city reports. The assessment can be taken at multiple locations around the city, most of which provide other services to the homeless. Learn more San Diego Housing Commission: The City of San Diego also partners with the SDHC to provide care for individuals and families in different stages of homelessness through shelters, help with rental payments, and federal housing vouchers. Learn more MULTI-CARE AGENCIES Veterans Village of San Diego: The group has transitional housing for eligible veterans who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless. VVSD says the rent for the furnished apartments is affordable and based on income. Employment and rehabilitation services are also provided. Learn more Alpha Project: There are hundreds of housing units available in Downtown San Diego, Chula Vista, Escondido, and Normal Heights. Employment and hospice care are available. Learn more Father Joe’s Villages: In addition to emergency shelters, the charity provides short-term rental assistance, permanent supportive housing, and affordable apartment units. Basic needs like showers and meals are also available. Learn more YWCA: The homeless are provided interim, transitional, and permanent housing, along with supportive services for victims of domestic violence. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The White House is expected to give US troops along the border new authorities to engage caravan member to protect Customs and Border Protection personnel. The White House will make the announcement Tuesday a U.S. official told ABC News. Troops don’t currently have the authority to engage with migrants, but the White House announcement will change that.CPB requested the authority directly from the White House, according to the U.S. official. 482

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – The owners of a Webster-area restaurant that has been broken into in recent days decided to set up their own overnight sting operation, and their plan led to two arrests.At around 2:30 a.m. Tuesday, the owners of Trevi Ristorante on 4703 Federal Blvd., put together their own stakeout and waited for anyone who would try to break into the business.The restaurant had been burglarized three times in the past week, including one incident in which a safe was taken. Jonathan Romero, the owners’s son, told ABC 10News, “We’re tired of it.”While the owner remained on the roof, his son waited across the street and a family friend watched from behind the eatery.After several hours, they noticed an SUV park in an alley behind the restaurant and two men get out of the vehicle.As the family observed the two people go through gates to the restaurant’s back doors, the owner’s son called 911.San Diego police officers arrived at the scene and took one of the would-be burglars into custody.However, the other man climbed up the side of the building and ran across the roof. After jumping from the roof down to the front parking lot, the man ran away as officers pursued him.The man was able to cross Federal Boulevard, but officers deployed a stun gun and subdued him.The stunned man was treated at the scene for his injuries and is expected to be OK. 1373

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The remains of a Kansas Marine who fought in World War II have been identified.U.S. Marines Corps Reserve Pfc. Raymond Warren was killed in 1943 during the Battle of Tarawa, according to the Associated Press. After his burial site was discovered in 2015, his nephew, Warren Cooper, of San Diego, and niece submitted mouth swaps for DNA testing, The Wichita Eagle reported.This month, the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency announced Warren's remains were identified in part through DNA analysis.RELATED: Veterans honor 75th anniversary of Battle of Iwo JimaWarren was awarded the Silver Star after his death and is eligible to be buried at Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors.“We figured that enormity of the sacrifice and the great honor it is to be buried at Arlington tipped that in the (direction) of him being buried there,” Cooper told the AP.According to the agency, Warren was part of Company K, 3rd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, Fleet Marine Force, where they faced Japanese troops on the island of Betio in the Gilbert Islands region. About 1,000 sailors and Marines and nearly all of the Japanese troops involved in the battle were killed.Warren was killed between the first and second day of fighting at Tarawa, the agency says. 1307
