(KGTV) — A family jewelry shop in El Cajon is out tens of thousands of dollars after a brazen robbery Friday.A couple entered Ishtar Jewelry Store on Avocado Avenue and began browsing around. It was a seemingly ordinary evening."They were looking for different pieces of jewelry, bracelets, necklaces," said Nadin Toma, the store owner's daughter. "My mom was the one who was helping them out. The female found a piece that she liked."After that, Toma said the woman claimed she needed to get her wallet from the car to purchase the piece of jewelry."Our door to get in is an electric door," explained Toma. "We have to buzz anyone in and out just for security purposes."So, the woman was buzzed out, but Toma said she held the door open.That's when the man by her side made his move, jumping over the display counter, snatching up a handful of gold chains, then running out of the wide-open front door."They just grabbed and ran as fast as they could," Toma said. "They got away."Toma estimates the cost of the gold chains were anywhere from ,000 to ,000.But, the thief also left something behind. His fanny pack hooked onto the front door and broke off his body as he ran away.Toma said inside the fanny pack was the suspect's identification card, which she gave to police.She also said a Good Samaritan wrote down the license plate number of the car the couple used to get away."With any robbery, it's very painful for anyone who goes through it," said Toma. "Unfortunately, it happened to us."Toma is hoping the ID card and the license plate number will help police track down the suspect.El Cajon Police is actively investigating. 1666

Discussing your salary with co-workers is seen as a taboo subject, but now some people are saying you should be talking openly about how much you make. "I think salaries in the work place have been taboo to talk about for years, and I think that's created a number of problems," says Marcus Ollig, president of the recruiting firm The Advocates. Ollig has been managing employees for years and believes transparency is important. However, he says, sharing your salary with co-workers is not the way to go about it. "You may hear that you are actually paid more than the person you're talking to, and now they ask you the question back, and now, you might not want to share because you don't want to make them feel bad," explains Ollig. Many people we spoke with say they want open dialogue and feel it's healthy in the workplace. However, Ollig says the real question you should find out is are you being paid what you're worth?Instead of going to your co-worker, Ollig recommends going to your boss. They are the only person who can tell you your worth in the company, Ollig says.But before you do, first do some research. Go to online sites like Glassdoor, Pay Scale and The Bureau of Labor Statistics. Those sites will show you the average pay range of someone in your position. "Speak to a really legitimate recruiter or temporary staffing agency, depending on what you do, because they have data on every job that they service," suggests Ollig. Once you're equipped with the knowledge, then it's time to speak to your boss."If your employer says, 'You are doing great, but there is no way I can get you from x to y,' then maybe talk about different positions, if you like the company" Ollig says. That's even if you've never taken one of those ancestry DNA tests.This is all thanks to those ancestry test kits. If someone’s relative takes the test, enough information is provided for scientists to link to you."Yes, eventually everyone's going to be traceable through DNA," says Itsik Pe’er, an associate professor at Columbia University.It also means solving crimes could get a lot easier.  Police have already started taking DNA from unknown suspects and comparing it to DNA databases.That information can lead to a match to a suspect’s relative."People want to connect to their long-lost second, third, fourth cousins and find those matches,” says Pe’er. “The flip side of that is that, yeah, investigators can find those matches due to DNA that have been sitting in these warehouses for decades."Pe'er is the co-author of a study at Columbia University that says scientists only need a 2 percent sample from the roughly 326 million people in the United States to be able to match anyone's DNA.Privacy experts worry that even people who have never committed a crime might not want to be matched to relatives.But it's a fact of science as the DNA sample continues to grow."It's just still incredible to think about, you know, like we live in such a big world, but it's really, really small," Pe’er says.Private companies are working to protect their databases, including places like My Heritage and 23andMe that prohibit forensic use of their databases in their user agreements. 1632

EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV) — The City of El Cajon has become a home away from home for many Chaldeans.They are a Catholic- Christian community who migrated to the U.S. from northern Iraq. El Cajon has the second largest number of Chaldean residents in the country."We as Chaldeans believe in the hope, and the resurrection, and the hope of what Jesus gives us," says Father Daniel Shaba.The church is the center of the Chaldean community in El Cajon. Hundreds of people gather at St. Peter Chaldean Catholic Cathedral for services each day.Complete Coverage: Life in El CajonMany Chaldean families left their home country of Iraq searching for a better life, after decades of war and violence against Christians and the church."We all share the same story of leaving and fleeing this persecution in Iraq," says Shaba. He says his family stayed in Greece before being cleared to come to the U.S. in 1994.According to the church, the first known Chaldean migrant came to San Diego in 1951. Within 30 years, the population grew to approximately 2,500. Today, nearly 40,000 Chaldean families have made El Cajon their home."The best part of El Cajon is the community," says doctor John Kasawa.Kasawa sees 15 to 20 patients a day, many of whom are Chaldean. Kasawa says he's one of few Chaldean doctors born in the U.S. He practices holistic and western medicine. Kasawa says his culture sparked his interest in becoming a doctor."They planted the seeds of how natural foods and drinking can have a very beneficial effect on longevity and really quality of life," Kasawa said.Detective Louie Michael, with the El Cajon Police Department, says he's grateful for his parents' bravery."At age 5, my dad was in the military, under that regime, and then we escaped from Iraq to turkey in a refugee camp and then came here at the end of '93," says Michael.He has been with El Cajon Police Department for more than ten years."I looked at the benefit of having a community that has nobody that they can speak to," says Michael. "For ten years, I was the only cop in the department that spoke Arabic and Aramaic."With Michael's help, the department now has five Chaldean officers on the force. He says it's the support of the church that has allowed the community to thrive.Many in the community say they will never call another city home."El Cajon is a unique place, its a very special place," says father Daniel Shaba. 2410

Dozens of wildfires are burning throughout California in August as news is emerging that a wildfire burning in Northern California is the largest in state history. The fires burning a few miles apart, known as the Mendocino Complex, started on July 27 and now encompasses an area the size of Los Angeles. 2018 also marks the second straight year California has recorded the state's largest wildfire following the Thomas Fire in 2017. A fire that began Monday is also spreading quickly in Orange County. Known as the Holy Fire, the blaze is tearing through fuel that has been accumulating for 40 years. Currently, nearly 30 wildfires are burning throughout California.
