Latinos make up a third of eligible voters going into the 2020 Presidential Election. A recent Pew Research study lists the Supreme Court as one of Latino voters’ top concerns.Christine Rodriguez, a Latina attorney set to be sworn into the Supreme Court Bar in January, says the concern comes from the lack representation. Rodriguez recalls dreaming of becoming an attorney as a 9-year-old girl but not having anyone to mentor her.“No one I knew was an attorney,” said Rodriguez. It wasn’t until her senior year of high school, during an educational trip to Washington, D.C., that she found her inspiration.“I was like, ‘Oh yeah! This is it! This is what I want to do,’” said Rodriguez of the moment she was able to observe Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg and the rest of the Supreme Court Justices as they heard a case.Rodriguez even kept the notes she took while observing. Near Justice Antonin Scalia’s name, she wrote a note describing him as talkative and funny. Next to Ginsburg’s name, Rodriguez wrote, “smart and serious.”Twenty years after this experience, Rodriguez is months away from getting sworn into the Supreme Court Bar, allowing her to argue cases before the Supreme Court. During that ceremony, she was set to meet Ginsburg.“I wanted to thank her for her tireless work as an attorney and as a woman and pioneer in this field,” said Rodriguez. As a Latina, Rodriguez says she has some concerns over some key decisions the Supreme Court will make in the coming term and who will be a part of the decision making process. One example she points to is health care.“Health care through the Affordable Care Act is an issue that will be up before the Supreme Court,” said Rodriguez.Opponents of Obamacare hope the court decides to suspend the program. President Trump has said he will replace Obamacare. While Rodriguez is concern with some specific issues the Supreme Court will hear, other voters say we need to start with a diverse Supreme Court. The Latino vote has never been as powerful as it is now. According to a Pew Research study, there are 32 million eligible Latino voters.Mari Carmen Puente Castallano is one of them.“I don’t care what side you vote, but vote. Make it known we are here,” Castallano said regarding voter turnout.Rodriguez says the Latino community has been ignored by politicians for too long, but now that the number of voters is significant enough, the community needs to double down and show up at the ballot box.“The more we vote the more politicians have to listen,” Rodriguez said. 2545

LA MESA, Calif. (KGTV) - A peace officer claims he was profiled by Walmart employees Wednesday.Johnny Aguirre says he and his wife went to the Walmart in La Mesa and he was carrying a backpack that he usually carries with him. There are items he carries in his backpack that are related to his job as a peace officer. “We walked in, and I got stopped by two greeters, they told me to put the backpack away int he lockers,” he said.Aguirre says the lockers were empty, so it was standard for all customers. He also says he noticed other people were walking around the store with backpacks. He believes employees singled him out because of the way he looked.“I got that feeling that I was profiled and racially discriminated because of the way I was dressed maybe,” he said. He says he was working all day and he was a little dirty.Walmart sent the following statement to 10News: “We do not tolerate discrimination of any kind. As a company, we’ve taken several steps to help mitigate the issue of crime and the locker system implemented in our Las Mesa store is just one example of our proactive approach. We take our customer’s claim seriously and will continue to look into this. ”“I got the feeling I was selected, I was profiled, so if this a new policy, they need to train their people better,” Aguirre said. 1322

LARGO, Florida — In the span of about 10 minutes, jurors in the sentencing trial of convicted cop killer Marco Parilla handed down two sentences. Only one was correct. And, it isn't what family members of fallen Tarpon Springs, Florida Police Officer Charles Kondek were hoping for.The jury had supposedly unanimously decided death was the appropriate penalty, but then the judge noticed some numbers scribbled out on the forms and asked the jury to go back and confirm all 12 jurors agreed on death.  Upon their return to the courtroom, the jury came back with a verdict of life in prison, as only 10 jurors voted for the death penalty and two for life in prison. The judge, explaining to Kondek's family and friends that under a new Florida law, the decision to sentence someone to death must be unanimous. The jurors made a paperwork error filling out their verdict that led to the confusion.Kondek's widow Theresa couldn't believe an error was made."Relief, we felt like justice was served for Charlie. We waited three years for this and then to have it taken away that was a little tough," Kondek said. "It’s closure for us. Obviously, we wanted the death penalty."Kondek said this chapter of her life is over and all she wants to do is move forward and live a life that will honor her fallen husband. "No one wins. Either way, my husband will never come home," Kondek said.  Parilla was convicted of murdering Officer Charles Kondek of the Tarpon Springs Police Department back in 2014.On Thursday, Parilla told the family he was ashamed of what he did and tried to apologize to the fallen officer's family. After learning Parilla would not face the death penalty, family members told him in their victim impact statements that they hoped he died in prison sooner rather than later."You are an animal and I hope you die the worst death possible, a shiv across the neck or something," Charles Kondek, the fallen officer's father told Parilla. 2038

Liquidation sales are finally starting at hundreds of Toys R Us and Babies R Us stores around the US, as the troubled toy retailer begins the process of going out of business. Most stores will start their liquidation sales Thursday, March 22, at 10 a.m. or when doors open.Millions of parents and children are dreaming of bargains on Barbies and savings on Star Wars. But before you grab an empty shopping cart and start hunting for Black Friday-style bargains, you may want to know a few cautions. If earlier Toys R Us closing sales are any indication, among the 200 stores that started liquidating in February, you may want to bring some skepticism along with your wallet. We went to one store at the beginning of its closing sale, and shoppers said they were not impressed. So here are 9 commonly asked questions:1. How big are the discounts? In the first week, they may not be great.  We found signs saying "up to 40 percent off," but most items had much less of a discount than 40 percent?off. Ten or 20 percent off was more the norm in the first few days, and 10 percent off may not be any great deal.2. Will they discount recent sales prices?  No, as with any liquidation sale, discounts are off full list price. Because of that, our check found that Lego sets and video games like Call of Duty were no cheaper than the same items at Walmart, despite the 20 percent markdown.3. Is everything on markdown? They may be this time.  However, among stores that started liquidating in February, diapers, baby wipes, and formula were not on sale.  That may change, as stores need to clear out everything this time.4. How do you know if the item is a deal? You may want to use a price comparison app like RedLaser, where you scan the bar code of the toy you are thinking of buying, to see if it is cheaper elsewhere. Or simply look up the item on Amazon or Walmart.com.5. Will they honor gift cards? Yes, until April 15th, according to the store.  But you may want to use them in the next week, because pickings will get slimmer and slimmer as the days go on.6. What if something is broken or missing? You will be stuck. All sales are final.7. What about the Babies R Us gift registry?  That will stay open until the stores close, but parents of newborns may want to start a new registry somewhere else.  8. Is Babies R Us really closing? For now, yes. Babies R Us may stay open IF a buyer steps forward.  Rumors have Amazon buying some Babies R Us and top performing Toys R Us stores, but nothing is confirmed yet.9. When will you find the best deals?  Typically a week after the sale starts, when most items remaining drop to 50 percent off.  But you won't find the hottest toys (Playstations, Apple products, American Girl dolls, etc) after the first few days.As always, don't waste your money.________________________"Don't Waste Your Money" is a registered trademark of Scripps Media, Inc. LA JOLLA, California — A long-time animal rights activist who has filmed seals and sea lions harassed in La Jolla says people are not getting the message.Andrea Hahn has filmed the animals every day since 1994. Footage from Sunday she says showed some of the worst behavior she has witnessed in recent months: a woman with a shovel disrupting pregnant mothers on the beach.Another video shows a grieving sea lion mother with her stillborn pup. It has generated over 100 million hits according to Hahn. She says the pregnant mothers are delivering more stillborn pups because people are not giving them proper space. She has even witnessed tourists stepping on the pups.  "People are not getting it. Tourists think because they paid money to get here they have the right to grapple with the animals. There are perfectly good laws on the books and people are ignoring them and the government is not enforcing the laws," said Hahn.A "no-selfie" sign was recently posted at South Casa Beach. It was posted to remind visitors that sea lions and the seals are protected by federal law, monitored by park rangers, and it's illegal to disturb them.  Access to the Children's Pool is closed due to pupping season but is set to reopen in May. "Right now that area is safe and quiet for them. It should be closed for good," Hahn said. 1391
