SHENYANG, Feb.3, (Xinhua) -- Fire gutted Thursday a five-star hotel in Shenyang, capital of northeast China's Liaoning Province, and no casualties had been found, local officials said.The fire broke out at 0:13 a.m. at Tower B, an apartment building of the Dynasty Wanxin building complex, and the flames quickly spread to the adjacent Tower A, which is largely a five-star hotel.All the 50-odd people in the hotel were evacuated. No casualties are found.The fire was effectively controlled, Shenyang Municipal Public Security Bureau officials told Xinhua at 4:35 a.m..Police said the fire was triggered by fireworks, which accidentally sparked off the external wall of the buildings. Further investigation into the cause and losses of the fire is still underway.Fire engines, whose water guns could jet water only 50 meters high, were helpless at the fire which flamed on the top of Tower A, 219 meters high.Power supply in the hotel was not cut off, which was said to keep the automatic spray facilities in operation in the building.Personnel from adjacent five-star Sheraton Shenyang Lido Hotel were evacuated, and residents around the Dynasty Wanxin building mainly stayed at home.Top leaders of the province and the city, including Chen Haibo, mayor of Shenyang, arrived at the site soon afterwards to direct efforts to quell the fire.The Dynasty Wanxin building complex, located in the bustling Qingnian Street of Heping District, comprises of three towers. BEIJING, Jan. 22 (Xinhua) -- Beijing is ready to kick off its first ever car license plates lottery, to be broadcast live both on TV and over the Internet on Jan. 26, said officials with the allotment office Saturday.A total of 17,600 car license plates will be allocated to qualified individual applicants through the lottery, in keeping with the principles of openness, fairness and equity, according to the office.Validation for the first batch of 210,178 individual applicants has been completed, and the office will make public the results, as well as lottery time and rules, on Tuesday.Applicants can check out the validation information at bjhjyd.gov.cn.The first group of car license plates for institution and company applicants will also be allocated through the lottery on the same day.The Beijing municipal government put in place the lottery mechanism at the end of last year in an effort to curb the capital city's fast growth of automobiles, which resulted in worsening traffic jams.The new mechanism seeks to reduce new car registrations by allowing only 240,000 in 2011, or about one-third of new cars registered in 2010.Data from the Beijing Municipal Commission of Transport (BMCT) shows there were only 78,000 cars in Beijing in 1978 and 200,000 in 1985.However, the number of cars soared after the country entered the 21st century amid fast economic growth and urbanization.Within 13 years, the number of cars in Beijing more than quadrupled to 4.76 million in 2010 from 1 million in 1997, according to the BMCT.

BEIJING, March 17 (Xinhuanet) -- A new study has shown that gene therapy can reduce symptoms in patients with Parkinson's, media reports said Thursday.The study, published in the journal Lancet Neurology, is the first to show positive results in a test of gene therapy against a sham operation in 45 U.S. Parkinson's patients.The treated group showed a 23.1 percent improvement on a scale of Parkinson's symptoms six months after treatment, compared to a 12.7 percent improvement for patients who received sham surgery, according to the published research."Gene therapy is no longer just a theory," said Michael Kaplitt, a neurosurgeon at New York-Presbyterian Hospital and Weill Cornell Medical Center, and one of the study authors. "We are getting much closer to a reality where this treatment can be offered to patients."In patients with Parkinson's disease, their brains get overactive after losing the normal supply of a chemical called GABA. The new treatment, gene therapy, works by inserting billions of copies of a gene into patients' brains that helps them produce more GABA.Kaplitt said the results might spur similar treatments for other brain disorders like Alzheimer's, epilepsy and depression.
