WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Inside one Washington D.C. bicycle repair shop is a cacophony of sounds, where both the bicycles and employees get a chance they may not have otherwise.“Working with your hands is still very important,” said Keith Jackson, operations manager at Gearin’ Up Bicycles.The nonprofit trains Black teens about everything it takes to run a bike shop.“For a lot of the young Black youth, this is really their only opportunity to get their feet wet in a bicycle business,” Jackson said.It’s an opportunity Daiquan Medley knows firsthand.“I’ve been here a long time now,” he said.Medley started coming to Gearin’ Up Bicycles several years ago, eventually working his way up to youth shop manager. It is quite a journey for someone who didn’t take to bicycling right away.“I couldn’t ride at first,” he said.Eventually, though, Medley picked it up and now envisions a future full of bicycles.“I would still have a full-service bike shop,” Medley said, “but then also have programs within it to actually still be able to teach people and they can learn how to maintain their bike on their own.”It’s an inspiration drawn from Gearin’ Up Bicycles, which helps young people build their own bicycles to keep and teaches them how to fix donated bikes that otherwise may have ended up in a landfill.“Our main goal obviously is workforce development, but I hope they get a sense of confidence and empowerment that they can do any job once they leave here,” said Lauren Shutler, the organization’s outreach coordinator.The repaired bicycles are then resold during Saturday sales, which have grown increasingly popular during the pandemic’s global bicycle shortage.“Our general sales are up 60%,” Jackson said. “Our bicycle sales are up 330% over last year.”The money from the sales then goes back into the nonprofit, though they say there’s always room for more.“As a nonprofit, we need people to come in and support us in that way,” Shutler said.It’s all part of the program to keep these wheels, and lives, in motion.“We've got them,” Jackson said.For more information on Gearin’ Up Bicycles and how you can help, click here. 2135

WASHINGTON (AP) — The White House on Sunday pushed the federal government closer to the brink of a partial shutdown later this week, digging in on its demand for billion to build a border wall as congressional Democrats stood firm against it."We will do whatever is necessary to build the border wall to stop this ongoing crisis of immigration," said White House senior adviser Stephen Miller.Asked if that meant having a government shutdown, he said: "If it comes to it, absolutely."Trump said last week he would be "proud" to have a shutdown to get Congress to approve a billion down payment to fulfill his campaign promise to build a wall on the U.S.-Mexico border. But the president doesn't have the votes from the Republican-controlled Congress to support funding for the wall at that level.Democratic congressional leaders, Sen. Chuck Schumer and Rep. Nancy Pelosi, have proposed no more than .6 billion, as outlined in a bipartisan Senate bill. The money would not go for the wall but for fencing upgrades and other border security. Democrats also offered to simply keep funding at its current level, .3 billion.Showing no signs of budging, Schumer said Sunday that it was up to Trump to decide whether parts of the federal government shut down at midnight Friday over his border wall, sending thousands of federal employees home without pay during the holidays.About one-quarter of the government would be affected, including the departments of Homeland Security, Transportation, Agriculture, State and Justice, as well as national parks."He is not going to get the wall in any form," Schumer said.Both parties in Congress have suggested that Trump would likely need to make the next move to resolve the impasse. Susan Collins, R-Maine, urged senators to revisit a bill she helped push earlier this year that would provide .5 billion for border security, including physical barriers as well as technology and border patrol agents.Schumer declined to say whether Democrats would be willing to consider proposals other than the two options that he and Pelosi offered.Republicans "should join us in one of these two proposals, which would get more than enough votes passed and avoid a shutdown," Schumer said. "Then, if the president wants to debate the wall next year, he can. I don't think he'll get it. WASHINTON, D.C. -- Senate Democrats are unveiling a plan to extend additional unemployment benefits.This is for the extra 0 every week, on top of what states already offer for unemployment.The new proposal would decrease the added benefit as the unemployment rate drops.The Economic Policy Institute supports that plan, saying the additional benefit should stay in place as long as needed.“People are really, really uncertain about how this is going to unfold over the coming months, so putting some arbitrary end date on any provisions related to supporting the economy and the people in it during this crisis makes no sense,” said Heidi Shierholz, Senior Economist and Director of Policy at the Economic Policy Institute.The institute tells us the expansion makes a huge difference, not just for the individual, but for all of us. It estimates if it cuts off at the end of July, that could cost the U.S. 5 million jobs over the next year. That's because less spending creates a further drag on the economy.However, Republicans say the expanded benefit gives people a reason to not go back to work.Some studies have found the economy could actually be worse off if people don't get working again.The American Enterprise Institute agrees, saying the move was just meant to get through the initial lockdown.“This is becoming less of a, the pandemic caused us to initiate lockdowns and people are at home, and now it's just we have a large number of unemployed people, what should we do to assist them, and 0 addition to unemployment checks in a bad economy is a really unprecedented step,” said Matt Weidinger with the American Enterprise Institute.The group says extending the benefits could set that precedent for Congress to act similarly for any future recessions. 1781
