BEIJING, Aug. 20 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Education on Friday said that Taiwan's new amended laws would be beneficial to the cross-Strait educational exchanges.On Thursday, the Taiwan regional legislature adopted amendments to three laws, which would allow local colleges to accept students from the Chinese mainland and recognize degrees from mainland schools, except for medical schools.The ministry said in a statement that Taiwan should not put in place discriminatory policies that might harm mainland students."We hope related authorities in Taiwan could make good plans, offering attractive colleges and majors for, and take effective measures to protect the legitimate rights and interests of mainland students," said the statement.Under the amended laws, mainland students can not apply for schools and colleges related to the island's security nor attend the exams of civil servants and professionals such as doctors and lawyers.Taiwan's education department said in a statement that it would issue two detailed regulations in line with the amendments in September. The first group of postgraduate students are expected to arrive next March and the first college students can enroll next September.

BEIJING, July 15 (Xinhua) -- At least 135 people had been confirmed dead and 41 are missing, as some of the worst flooding in years continues in south China.By 4 p.m. Thursday, close to 35.5 million people in 10 southern provinces and Chongqing Municipality had been affected by continuous rainstorms and floods since July 1, the Civil Affairs Ministry said in a notice on its website.About 113,000 homes were destroyed and more than 1.2 million people had been relocated, it said.Direct economic losses were estimated at about 26 billion yuan (3.8 billion U.S. dollars), up from Wednesday's 22.2 billion yuan.In Jiangxi Province alone, at least eight people have died since July 8, and direct economic losses have amounted to more than 2.9 billion yuan.The ministry had dispatched work groups to Jiangxi to direct relief work.The Office of State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters announced earlier Thursday that floods had killed 594 people in 26 provinces since the beginning of the year. ZHOUQU, Gansu, Aug. 8 (Xinhua) -- At least 127 people have been confirmed dead in rain-triggered mudslides Sunday in a northwest China county, while rescuers are racing against the clock to search nearly 1,300 others who are still missing.Heavy downpours triggered landslides and mud-rock flows in Zhouqu County, Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in Gansu Province, early Sunday morning.The rescue headquarters in Zhouqu estimated that 1,294 people are missing as of 9 p.m. Sunday. Earlier the provincial civil affairs department put the figure at nearly 2,000.Another 117 were injured, including 29 in serious condition, as of 9:25 p.m..
