WASHINGTON, D.C. — Unlike in many parts of the world, Election Day in America isn’t a day most people get off from work or school, and it’s not for a lack of trying in the past.“There've been several efforts to make it a holiday, at least for the five previous Congresses, including this one,” said Matthew Weil, who runs The Elections Project at the Bipartisan Policy Center.Those proposed bills to make Election Day a federal holiday have gone nowhere though.Coincidentally, America also has one of the lowest voter participation rates in the developed world, which was about 56 percent in 2016.Over the years, though, some states have made it a state or civic holiday, most recently this year in Illinois and Virginia. In California, state law requires employers to give employees at least two paid hours to vote on Election Day. However, that’s not the case in most places.Weil said whether or not employers need to give you time to vote on Election Day, varies state by state.“In states that don't have robust voting by mail options, or early voting options, Election Day being the only option isn't good,” Weil said. “The good news is the trend has been toward expanding options over the past 10 years.”Those options include early voting, which millions of voters have already done in the 2020 election, including Kevin Jackson in Ohio.“Don’t just wait. Plan your vote,” Jackson said. “Get down here and get it done.”The key to moving forward, experts say, is for all states to offer as many opportunities to vote as possible. WASHINGTON (AP) — Winter hit U.S. honeybees hard with the highest loss rate yet, an annual survey of beekeepers showed.The annual nationwide survey by the Bee Informed Partnership found 37.7% of honeybee colonies died this past winter, nearly 9 percentage points higher than the average winter loss.The survey of nearly 4,700 beekeepers managing more than 300,000 colonies goes back 13 years and is conducted by bee experts at the University of Maryland, Auburn University and several other colleges.Beekeepers had been seeing fewer winter colony losses in recent years until now, said Maryland's Dennis vanEngelsdorp, president of the bee partnership and co-author of Wednesday's survey."The fact that we suddenly had the worst winter we've had ... is troubling," vanEngelsdorp said.Some bees usually die over winter, but until the past couple decades, when a combination of problems struck colonies, losses rarely exceeded 10%, he said.Bees pollinate billion worth of U.S. food crops. One-third of the human diet comes from pollinators, including native wild bees and other animals, many of which are also in trouble, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture."We should be concerned on multiple levels," said University of California, Berkeley, agricultural social scientist Jennie Durant, who has a separate study this week on loss of food supply for bees.Year-to-year bee colony losses, which include calculations for summer, were 40.7%, higher than normal, but not a record high, the survey found."The beekeepers are working harder than ever to manage colonies but we still lose 40-50% each year... unacceptable," Swiss bee expert Jeff Pettis, who wasn't part of the survey, said in an email.For more than a decade, bees have been in trouble with scientists blaming mites, diseases, pesticides and loss of food.This past winter's steep drop seems heavily connected to the mites, vanEngelsdorp said. Those mites feed on the bees' fats and that's where the insects store protein and center their immune response.Durant's study in this week's journal Land Use Policy found that changes in food supply in the Midwest's Prairie Pothole Region, a hot spot for honeybee colonies, has been a major factor in losses. "When you show up and get to release all this stress and strife of everyday life, that's in your head, this monkey brain you have all day," says Obershaw. "When you get to forget about that for 45 minutes, it does something to you chemically and physically." The study also found those who participated in group activities had one less poor mental health day a month and felt a 43 percent improvement mentally. If you're looking to get the most out of your group exercise, team sports were rated number one for having the most mental health benefits. Another, popular group fitness class is cycling. They say the high intensity cardio mixed with motivation also gave great results. "It's easy to stay in bed, lay in bed, but exercise releases endorphins," Obershaw says. "It's science; when you release those endorphins that's great for your mind and it's great for your psyche."
