SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Police Saturday were asking for the public's help in locating an elderly woman who went missing from her son's Mira Mesa home.Martha Carrington, 83, was seen leaving her son's apartment in Casa Mira View, east of Westview Parkway and north of Mira Mesa Boulevard, between 10:30 p.m. Friday and 2 a.m. Saturday, San Diego police said.Carrington suffers from schizophrenia, high blood pressure and the early stages of Alzheimer's disease, officers said.Her family doesn't believe she took any money with her, and she has no cell phone.Carrington was described as black and about 5-feet-8-inches tall. She was last seen in blue pajamas, but it's possible she changed clothes before leaving, police said.Officers asked anyone with information on the incident to call the San Diego Police Department at (619) 531-2000. 839

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego International Airport broke its passenger traffic record for the fifth consecutive year, serving roughly 24 million passengers in 2018, the Airport Authority announced Friday.The total -- up nearly 10 percent over last year -- included one million international passengers, a 19 percent jump from 2017, according to the Airport Authority, which credited several airlines' expanded service and airport-wide traffic increases for the new record.``This is a tremendous time of growth for not only SAN but the entire San Diego region,'' said Kim Becker, the airport's president and CEO. ``With more people choosing San Diego as their destination of choice, we are looking ahead at projects to accommodate this trend and provide the world-class airport experience our customers and community deserve.''Airlines servicing the airport added 16 new routes throughout the year and 15 of the airport's 17 airlines saw overall traffic increases.According to the Airport Authority, Southwest Airlines added 794,401 passengers from 2017 to 2018, the most of any airline flying out of San Diego. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Opening statements are scheduled Monday in the murder trial of a man accused in the 2015 shooting death of a customer during a robbery at a Clairemont-area gas station convenience store, as well as a shootout with police two days after the killing.Ahmed Hassan Mumin, 34, is charged with murder, robbery, burglary, and being a felon in possession of a firearm in connection with the April 16, 2015, death of 48-year-old Eric Schade. Mumin also faces a special circumstance allegation that the killing happened during the course of a robbery, meaning he faces life imprisonment without the possibility of parole if convicted.He's also charged with two counts of attempted murder on a peace officer for opening fire on two arresting officers in an April 18 shootout at a City Heights apartment.At his preliminary hearing, surveillance footage was shown allegedly depicting Mumin inside an Arco am/pm at around 3:45 a.m., pointing a gun at the clerk and demanding cash. The store clerk testified that the robber was wearing a dark beanie and a bandana covering his face.The clerk testified that he put the cash drawer on the counter. But Schade -- a neighborhood regular -- took a swipe at the robber's gun as if to push it out of his face, and Mumin took a step back and shot the victim once in the chest, prosecutors alleged.The footage shows the shooter rifling through the cash drawer, then fleeing with an undisclosed amount of cash.Two days later, officers tracked Mumin to an apartment complex on Winona Avenue in City Heights. Police officers testified that Mumin hid behind a set of doors in a community room. As a detective tried one of the doors, the defendant opened fire from behind another door, prompting the detectives to return fire, according to testimony.Mumin was shot in the abdomen by police and hospitalized.Co-defendant Adan Ibrahim -- allegedly the getaway driver -- was previously charged with murder, though that count was dismissed earlier this year by San Diego County Superior Court Judge Kenneth K. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Target Corp. has agreed to pay .4 million to resolve allegations that it violated terms of a 2011 judgment regarding the company's handling and disposal of retail hazardous waste, San Diego County District Attorney Summer Stephan announced Wednesday.``This settlement holds Target accountable for this second violation of environmental laws that involve the improper disposal of a long list of hazardous materials,'' Stephan said. ``This case serves as a reminder to corporations of the importance of environmental protection laws that safeguard the public's health and that violators will be held accountable.''The current settlement -- announced by Stephan, 21 other California district attorneys, the California Attorney General's Office and the city attorneys of San Diego and Los Angeles -- comes as a result of investigations that concluded the company committed violations by improperly disposing hazardous waste into landfills across California between 2012 and 2016. The waste included such items as electronics, batteries, aerosol cans, compact fluorescent light bulbs and medical waste, including syringes, over-the-counter and prescribed pharmaceuticals, as well as confidential medical information from its customers.``We are confident that with these strong injunctive terms and penalties, Target will implement meaningful changes to prevent this from ever happening again,'' said California Attorney General Xavier Becerra. ``However, the wise move for all companies is to abide by the law and employ proactive training and processes to help ensure that hazardous waste violations are avoided in the first place.''It's the second settlement resolving allegations of hazardous waste compliance violations by Target.
