SAN DIEGO — (KGTV) -- Janessa Goldbeck's medals from her time serving in the Marines stand inside her campaign headquarters, which also doubles as the garage in her Talmadge-area home. "It really shaped how I look at what our government's role is in our society and who's looking out for people who don't have anyone else to look out for them," she said of her military service. Goldbeck, a Democrat, has been a relative unknown in the race to replace retiring Congresswoman Susan Davis in the 53rd Congressional District. In fact, she polled at just 2 percent in the 10News Union-Tribune scientific poll released Feb. 4. The district is heavily Democratic, with Democrats outnumbering Republicans nearly two-to-one in voter registration. That's why most headlines are going to Democrats with more backing and money - Sara Jacobs, who held posts in Obama's state department, and City Council President Georgette Gomez, who has the endorsement of the California Democratic Party. Jacobs lead the pack at 23 percent in the Feb. 4 poll, with Republican Chris Stoddard in second place at 10 percent. Gomez polled at 5 percent. The top two votegetters March 3, regardless of party, move on to the November general election. "We're just going nose to the grindstone, trying to get that message out to voters," Goldbeck said. Goldbeck's message got a big microphone over the weekend, when the Union-Tribune endorsed her over all others. The editorial board acknowledged her service and called her interview one of the most impressive this campaign season. "Goldbeck would be a refreshing, assured, morally corageous voice on Capitol Hill," the editorial said. Goldbeck, a San Diego native, said she screamed when she heard she got the endorsement. After all, the Union-Tribune editorial board said it almost didn't call for an interview, given her well-known opponents. "To be honest, we were stunned," she said of earning the endorsement. While newspaper circulation is down nationwide, the U-T gave Goldbeck an introduction to an audience she may not have been able to reach on her own. Bill Celis, an associate professor of journalism at USC Annenberg, said people still look to newspapers for reasoned guidance on important issues and candidates. "I think an endorsement from a highly read newspaper for a candidate that doesn't have a lot of campaign dollars is enormous," he said. As of Dec. 31, Goldbeck had raised a little more than 0,000. Jacobs had nearly million, while Gomez had more than 0,000. 2518

SAN DIEGO (CNS) -- A 37-year-old man was fatally shot on the sidewalk near a parking garage in downtown San Diego's East Village neighborhood, police said Wednesday. The shooting was reported at around 10 p.m. Tuesday near the parking garage on G Street between 14th and 15th streets that serves the Albertsons grocery store, San Diego Police Lt. Andra Brown said.Officers responded and found a 37-year-old man lying on the sidewalk at the entrance of the parking garage with at least one apparent gunshot wound, Brown said. The victim, whose name was withheld pending family notification, was pronounced dead at the scene, she said."It is early in the investigation and little is known about the circumstances surrounding the man's death," Brown said.Witnesses reported seeing a man wearing a dark, hooded sweatshirt and a black hat run through the parking garage after the shooting, then turn westbound on Market Street, the lieutenant said. A detailed description of the man was not immediately available.Anyone with information about the deadly shooting was asked to call SDPD's homicide unit at 619-531-2293 or Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477. 1153

SAN DIEGO - A 13-year-old Tierrasanta, California boy is battling for his life after family members say he was diagnosed with bacterial meningitis.A week ago Sunday, Grant Eyles started throwing up while his mother drove him and his siblings back from Los Angeles.  He quickly developed a fever, but didn't get worse until Thursday, when he lost mobility on his right side and became confused. His mother said a battery of tests pointed to bacterial meningitis, where membranes around the brain and spinal cord become inflamed, and it started with a common ailment."It was a complication essentially from a sinus infection. The infection breached the sinus cavity and went into the brain," said family friend Vanessa Bredehoft.Over the weekend, seizures forced doctors to place Grant in a medically induced coma.  Grant remains in critical condition.County health officials say many strains of bacterial meningitis do not require an alert for person-to-person prevention, and this appears to be one of those cases.A Gofundme campaign has been set up to help with the family's expenses. 1107

SAN DIEGO (AP/KGTV) — Unlike most Californians, people in San Diego will be able to get a reprieve from the heat this Labor Day weekend by heading to movie theaters and dining inside a restaurant. Among California’s 10 most populous counties, San Diego is the only one with virus cases low enough to meet state standards for reopening theaters, museums and gyms, and resuming indoor dining — all with limited capacity to provide for physical distancing. San Diego County is listed in the state's second tier, or "substantial" tier, for cities reporting four to seven daily coronavirus cases per 100,000 residents and a positive test rate between 5% and 8%.As of Thursday, San Diego’s case rate is 5.8 and the testing positivity percentage is 3.8%. Since one of those metrics is in the second tier, the county isn't eligible to begin the 14-day countdown to qualify for the next tier of easing restrictions.Local officials say an aggressive reaction to outbreaks and a bipartisan approach have helped the county deal with the pandemic. While San Diego County has kept case rates low, the county reported two new outbreaks — in a business and in a restaurant/bar — on Thursday for a total of 17 community outbreaks in the last week.Officials warned this week that Labor Day weekend poses a threat to those gradually decreasing metrics and encouraged residents to be safe and avoid gatherings over the holiday weekend. 1422

SAN DIEGO — The banner atop North Park’s Rudford’s Restaurant reads, “Stand up small business.”The word defy is written just below.Defy is exactly what father-and-son team Jeff and Nicholas Kacha planned to do over the weekend - until the community got word. They planned to continue serving food indoors even though the county on Saturday moved into the state’s most strict tier of coronavirus restrictions - the purple tier. But they were faced with threats of broken windows, picketing and lost customers.“It's been a nightmare that just keeps getting worse,” Jeff Kacha said.Redfords, which is not serving indoors, laid off 10 staffers at the news. Sales are down 40 percent. And the 60 turkeys they ordered for Thanksgiving may now not sell.Gov. Newsom says he remains concerned over the recent increase in the rate of coronavirus cases. The state on Monday moved 41 of the state's 58 counties into the purple tier. And even restaurants that look full outside say it hurts. At Puesto in La Jolla, the patio was busy all weekend, but co-founder Eric Adler wasn't celebrating“It looked full and it was full but that still translates to reduced revenue of around 30 percent for us,” he said. But other businesses weren't hit as hard.Point Loma Sports Club already had the bulk of its equipment outside under tents from earlier in the outbreak. When the county entered the purple tier, general manager Bryan Welch moved even more out for the members.“We may do this again two more times, four more times,” he said. "We're trying not to be shocked by it, we're just trying to adapt, and if you can adapt, we just feel like we can thrive.”The challenges, however, could grow as the weather cools into the winter months. 1724
