A Missouri man with stage 4 pancreatic cancer says his rights were violated when police searched his hospital room after they suspected he might have marijuana. Last week, officers confronted Nolan Sousley, who was a patient at the Missouri hospital. Police say they received a call from hospital security, stating they smelled marijuana. Sousley said that made no sense, because he doesn't smoke marijuana. However, he admitted he does use CBD oil from marijuana plants, which has been cited to ease pain for patients with certain ailments. Missouri did vote to approve medical marijuana in this past election. However, patients would need medical cards, which won’t be issued until July. Dan Viets, an attorney who worked on the effort to make medical marijuana legal in Missouri, says he doesn’t believe there was legal justification to invade the patient’s room. Viets has consulted with Sousley about the hospital room incident. “There's just no justification for treating patients as if they were serious criminals,” the attorney says. According to reports, police said they received consent to search his bags. Ultimately, cops found nothing, and no citations were issued. In a statement on their 1217

All 157 people on board an Ethiopian Airlines flight that crashed soon after taking off from Addis Ababa have been killed, the airline said on Sunday morning. The plane, en route to Nairobi, Kenya, lost contact at 8:44 a.m. local time, six minutes after taking off from Bole International Airport in the Ethiopian capital. The aircraft, flight number ET302, went down near Bishoftu, southeast of Addis Ababa. An airline spokesperson told CNN the victims were of 35 different nationalities. The spokesperson said 32 Kenyans, 18 Canadians, nine Ethiopians, eight Americans, eight Italians and seven UK nationals were among the passengers.Eight Chinese passengers were also on board, said Li Liang, spokesperson for the Chinese Embassy to Ethiopia.Ethiopian Airlines CEO, Tewolde GebreMariam, told reporters at a press conference that the pilot had reported technical difficulties and asked for clearance to return to Addis Ababa. He was given clearance to turn back, according to GebreMariam, citing the Air Traffic Controllers record. The pilot was a senior Ethiopian Airlines pilot who had flown more than 8,000 hours. He had an "excellent flying record," according to the CEO.The CEO visited the crash site on Sunday. He said the plane "is now right inside the ground" and it was not possible to identify whether it was an emergency landing or a crash. He said there was still smoke at the site when he visited."As it is a fresh incident, we have not been able to determine the cause. As I said, it is a brand new airplane with no technical remarks, flown by a senior pilot and there is no cause that we can attribute at this time.""The routine maintenance check didn't reveal any problems," GebreMariam added.Asked about the possibility of terrorism or sabotage: "At this stage we cannot rule out anything." The Boeing 737 MAX 8 is the same type of plane as the Indonesian Lion Air jet that crashed soon after takeoff from Jakarta in 2018 -- killing 189 people."They of course are the same [model of 737 MAX 8] planes," but GebreMariam said only an investigation could make any conclusions. The airline said in an earlier statement that staff would "be sent to the accident scene and will do everything possible to assist the emergency services."It added that a passenger information center and hotline "will be available shortly for family or friends of those who may have been on flight."The Ethiopian government expressed its "deepest condolences to the families," the office of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, who first broke the news of the crash, said on Twitter.Ethiopian Airlines has gained the reputation of being one of the best airlines in Africa. It has a good safety record and the newest fleet of planes on the African continent, 2778

Americans have welcomed him into their living rooms since 1984, and for decades, the beloved host of Jeopardy became a daily staple in many people’s lives. This week, on the familiar set of the popular game show, Alex Trebek delivered somber news: he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. "Just like 50,000 others each year, this week I was diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer,” Trebek said in the video. “Now, normally the prognosis for this is not very encouraging, but I’m going to fight this, and I’m going to keep working." The sad reality is Trebek is right. Pancreatic cancer is one of the deadliest types of the disease. “The 5-year survival rate is just 9 percent,” says Julie Fleshman with the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network. Fleshman says it’s also not an easy disease to diagnose early, because symptoms like back pain and stomach aches can be benign. Therefore, pancreatic cancer is often only diagnosed when it's reached stage 4, meaning it has spread to other parts of the body. But Fleshman says Trebek's video message may be a breath of fresh air for anyone battling the disease. "I think having hope and empowerment when diagnosed with a difficult disease like pancreatic cancer is extremely important, and Alex’s message yesterday was courageous and inspiring to all of us," she says.In his announcement, Trebek inserted a bit of his trademark humor, saying he was going to fight this because “truth told, I have to, because under the terms of my contract I have to host Jeopardy for three more years!"Trebek asked for prayers from his fans. A New Year's Eve storm is set to bring heavy snow, strong winds and ice to the Northeast, while further south thunderstorms and rain could round out 2018.A complex storm system will bring a "plethora of impacts" from the Rockies to the Northern Plains and Upper Midwest on Monday, potentially making travel dangerous, the National Weather Service said."This arctic boundary will cause temperatures to plummet and wind chills to reach hazardous levels from Montana to Minnesota," the NWS said Sunday.Another front moving south is expected to bring "significant snowfall" to parts of Arizona, Colorado, and New Mexico, where some areas could get more than 8 inches of snow accumulation, the weather service said.Meanwhile, a storm moving from the western Gulf of Mexico is expected to result in widespread rainfall and thunderstorms as it pushes into the Ohio Valley and then the Northeast on Monday, the NWS said."Severe thunderstorms, heavy rainfall, and flooding" will be possible from the lower Mississippi Valley to the mid-South, and the Midwest on New Year's Eve, the weather service said. 1106

A wildfire has shut down a portion of Interstate 95 in northern Florida, snarling traffic on a major US highway as the busy Memorial Day weekend begins. The Yellow Bluff Fire has scorched 450 acres and is 30 percent contained, the Florida Forest Service's Jacksonville office said. It started Wednesday, and detours are in place as it burns adjacent to I-95.The Florida Highway Patrol is diverting traffic off I-95, and both northbound and southbound directions are closed in Duval County, said Officer Christian Hancock of the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.I-95 is a major thoroughfare along the East Coast from Miami to the US/Canada border in Maine, and is also key to accessing major beaches in Florida."With the Memorial Day travel weekend approaching, all travelers should closely monitor the media for updates on safety and I-95's reopening," said Commissioner Nicole Fried of the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. The National Weather Service in Jacksonville has issued a dense smoke advisory in the area. Visibility will be reduced to a quarter mile or less, it said. 1109
