TAIPEI, March 31 (Xinhua) -- Experts from the Chinese mainland and Taiwan Wednesday started their second round of talks in Taipei to pave the way for a long-awaited economic deal that is expected to boost cross-Strait economic ties.The two-day meeting in Tashi, Taoyuan county, is expected to speed up the consultation process of the Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement (ECFA), which is intended to normalize mainland-Taiwan economic ties and bring the two economies closer.The two sides are expected to exchange views on operational and technological topics including the main content of the agreement and consultation arrangements in the future.The mainland side is composed of directors of the mainland's Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits (ARATS), experts and economic affairs officials.Tang Wei, director-general of the Ministry of Commerce's Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao affairs department, said such an agreement would further cross-Strait economic cooperation, and help the two sides cope with the impact of possible economic crises in the future and the increasingly competitive international market.

BEIJING, June 2 (Xinhua) -- China opposes the U.S. decision to set final duties of up to more than 200 percent on imports of steel gratings from China, the Ministry of Commerce (MOC) said in a statement Wednesday.This came after the U.S. Commerce Department Tuesday announced final anti-dumping duties of 136.76 to 145.18 percent on the gratings to "offset below-market pricing." It also set a countervailing duty of 62.46 percent.MOC said the United States had acted "discriminatorily" in the anti-dumping and anti-subsidy investigation and made the wrong conclusion, and China is dissatisfied and is opposed to this.Such move could hurt the interests of China, which both Chinese government and enterprises would not accept, the ministry said.China urged the U.S. to take effective measures to correct the mistake, it said.According to the U.S. trade remedy procedure, the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) will also make its final injury determination about the product soon.If the ITC makes affirmative final determinations that imports of steel gratings from China materially injure, or threaten material injury to, the domestic industry, the Commerce Department will issue anti-dumping duties and countervailing duties orders.In 2009, the United States imposed a series of trade remedy measures on Chinese products, and the value involved was eight times more than that in 2008, the MOC statement said."Such action not only hurts the interests of China, but also has an adverse impact on bilateral economic and trade ties," it said.China hoped the United States could show restraint in using trade remedy measures and act to fight trade protectionism, it said.

HONG KONG, April 23 (Xinhua) -- The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region held Friday a grand funeral ceremony to say goodbye to well-known businessman Tsui Tsin-tong, who was also a noted social activist, philanthropist and a close friend to the Communist Party of China.Tsui was also a member of the Standing Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) National Committee before he died of an illness on April 2 this year in the Chinese capital of Beijing at the age of 69.Jia Qinglin, chairman of the National Committee of the CPPCC, the country's top advisory body, and Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping had both sent messages of condolences to Tsui's family after Tsui's death.In their messages of condolences, Jia and Xi praised Tsui for his great contributions to Hong Kong's stable transition, smooth handover from Britain to China and Hong Kong's lasting prosperity, as well as Tsui's contributions to Chinese mainland's reform-and- opening-up drive and modernization.Tsui's funeral ceremony was held at Hong Kong's landmark Convention and Exhibition Center in the day. KHARTOUM, May 8 (Xinhua) -- Sudanese official said Saturday that the China-Arab Cooperation Forum constitutes an important platform to upgrade the economic, commercial and social ties between China and the Arab world."The China-Arab Cooperation Forum is important as it constitutes one of the major mechanisms to enhance and strengthen the economic and commercial relations between the Arab states and China," Abdul-Baqui Jailani, Sudanese state minister for humanitarian affairs, told Xinhua, one week before a ministerial conference of the China-Arab Cooperation Forum scheduled for May 13, in Tianjin, China.Jailani regarded the Sino-Sudanese cooperation as a model for the Arab countries to follow suit, saying that "Chinese experience in Sudan deserves to be studied thoroughly and it deserves to be repeated elsewhere in any other African or Arab country"."I think if we take for example oil industry, exploration and production services, the Chinese have proved to be at the highest level of development in this industry in particular, and I think we can develop this in other similar countries where there are reserves of petroleum," he added.He went on to say that "China is working with full transparency; they can build confidence with others without any hindrances or obstacles."The Sudanese official further called upon the Arab and African countries as well to give the Chinese a chance to invest and cooperate, adding that "such cooperation will result in mutual benefit for both China and others nations."He affirmed that China's contribution to establishment of development projects in Sudan would help in achieving lasting stability and peace in the country, saying that "for example, if we concentrate on development, on infrastructure, we will come to peace in Darfur.
